In dog training, understanding key behavior modification techniques can help you choose the best approach for your pup. Flooding exposes a dog to a fear all at once, which can be stressful and risky. Desensitization gently introduces the trigger in small steps to build comfort over time. Counterconditioning pairs the trigger with positive experiences to change your dog’s emotional response.
Want to help your pup overcome fears safely? Contact Double D Dog Training today to get started!

Why Do Dogs Lick? Good info! Check it out. Woof Woof 🐾
I LIKE TO LICK YOU!
Dogs just love to lick - themselves, other animals and people. Have you ever wondered why, though?
Whether you love it and it makes you smile or you hate it and it makes you run for the soap and sanitiser, licking people is a very normal, natural behaviour for dogs.
Historically, dog licks were considered to be medically beneficial to humans. Dogs were used in Ancient Egypt to heal injuries and cure diseases.
Fisherman in Fiji allowed dogs to lick their wounds, believing this practice would speed up healing.
The French have a saying: “langue de chien, langue de médecin” which translates to “a dog’s tongue, a doctor’s tongue.”
Gentle licking of some types of wounds may help to remove dirt or debris that slows down healing as the tongue catches foreign matter, which then sticks to the saliva and is removed.
Although dog saliva has some antimicrobial properties, allowing dogs to lick either their own wounds or ours can lead to serious infection from the bacteria found in their mouths.
Whether or not to allow your dog to lick you (when you don’t have wounds!) is a completely personal choice. I personally don’t mind occasional licking as long as it’s not my face and it doesn’t become excessive.

Whether you're facing puppy chaos or persistent habits, successful training starts with the 3 C’s:
Clarity - clearly ask for the behavior you want without repeating the command.
Consistency - very important to practice every day 5-10 minutes 2x per day.
Communication - dogs learn from the tone of our voice, eye contact, and our body language.
Because dog training starts with the proper guidance! 🐕

Dean was the kid who brought home the strays he found in the neighborhood and had a variety of pets growing up from mice, gerbils, fish, cats, dogs and always knew he had an affinity towards animals and a natural ability to connect with them. That connection continued throughout his life with many of his own dogs which included chow chows, a lab and several bichons.
During his 24-year sales career Dean volunteered at local shelters to walk and bathe dogs and assisted several rescues with adoption and fundraising events, fostering and transports. After a moment of clarity Dean decided to pursue his passion with animals as a dog trainer.
He attributes he connection with animals to his solid spiritual practice of daily prayer and meditation which garners him a strong intuition of what is going on with the animal. His friends are amazed at how animals naturally gravitate to him as if they’ve known him forever. Even the most fearful and threatened animals feel his sense of calm and tranquility. He has the uncanny ability to get dogs to do whatever needs to be done.
Dean is a practitioner in several different healing modalities which he uses in his work with dogs and has seen some amazing results! On a spiritual path for over 30 years Dean has learned and incorporated many of the lessons on his journey with his work with dogs. He believes his strength as a dog trainer includes connecting to the animals through kindness and compassion at a soul level.
Dean has a B.A. in Psychology from Loyola University where he had a rat and utilized Skinnerian Operant Condition and Classical Conditioning training for one of his lab projects. He is currently sitting for his CPDT-KA exam in September and has already completed the Karen Pryor Foundations course and Susan Smith Learning Theory course and is Animal First Aid and CPR certified. He is a Professional member of with the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and a Supporting Member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). As of recent he was the VP on the Board of a Low Cost Spay & Neuter organization assisting with fundraising and events. He is very active at his local shelter walking and bathing dogs as well as co-teaching the free dog training classes offered at the shelter for people who have adopted from there. He is part of a local training group as a student teacher to continue his knowledge in the dog training field. He has his own online pet apparel products business that he runs part-time called ZodiacDog.com, which includes boutique leashes, collars, harnesses and custom-made dog bowls. The tag line is “A Fun Way to Celebrate Your Pets Personality.”
On any given day you can find Dean with his Bichon Louie whether it is on a walk by the river, at the beach, at the dog park, or doing volunteer work at the shelter. He enjoys helping friends and neighbors with their dogs, teaching obedience or dog sitting/walking or whatever is needed as long as there is a dog involved!
To sum up, if you’re at a party and don’t see Dean, go find out where the dogs are and that’s where he’ll be!
