: Grains in Pet Food 🌾

In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began investigating reports that certain grain-free diets might be linked to DCM, a serious heart condition that leads to an enlarged heart and can potentially cause heart failure. Initial findings showed that dogs with DCM were often fed diets high in legumes, potatoes, and other ingredients common in grain-free recipes. This led to speculation that the absence of grains might contribute to the development of DCM.

However, further studies revealed that the link wasn’t as straightforward as initially thought. The FDA and veterinary cardiologists recognized that DCM is a complex disease with multiple contributing factors, such as genetics, diet formulation, and nutrient levels—not simply the presence or absence of grains.
