Sorry we havent been posting as much lately. Things have been crazy around here. But one of the biggest things ever has happened...

The Idaho Reptile Zoo has been gifted 3 adorable baby Galapagos Tortoises from the Galapagos Tortoise Alliance.

They are a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and saving this amazing species.

Some quick interesting facts for those who do not know why this is such a big deal...
- they are the largest species of tortoise
- of their original population study, their numbers have dwindled to 20%
- each subspecies has a distinctive shell to their island home
- WE HAVE THE ONLY THREE IN THE ENTIRE NORTHWEST!!!!

You gotta come see these babies! They are so stinking adorable.

Oh... and just a heads up... the markings on their back do not cause any harm. The facility we got them from mark the babies to track their progress. It should all wear off with time.

For those who have recently visited us, you may have noticed Bob the Northern Pacific rattlesnake is off display. Bob has had a mass growing since he was surrendered to us. It started the size of a pea and we have worked with our local vet to help reduce it. Recently it has gotten too large and we had to take action. He went in for surgery to remove the mass and his recovery is going incredible. He is still as alert as ever.

Dont miss out on the opportunity to sponsor your favorite animal here at the zoo. With the sponsorship, you'll be able to pick one of our three plaques to decorate, so we can add it to the enclosure. In addition, as a thank you for the support, on the day of sponsorship you will receive a key chain, along with the chance to interact with the animal you sponsored. The kind of interaction varies between animals. On top of everything else, you'll get a social media shout-out as well as be tagged in every post of the animal.

We are so happy to announce that our rhumba of Great Basin Rattlesnakes had a little baby.
And yeah... that's what a group of Rattlesnakes is called.
But for having animals that we had to relocate from the wild, to start breeding is the ultimate sign they are happy and loving life.
He has already shed his first shed so he'll be ready to feed soon. So be sure to come by on Sunday for feeding day to give this little guy some encouragement at 3pm!

For those of you who have been coming to the zoo for a while... you might remember Zero, our black and white tegu.
He had an infamous reputation of thinking everything that moved was food. So, for his own good and health, we moved Zero back to our "work room" back behind the scenes.
This is where Aspen and some of our other keepers can interact with him in a more positive way.
Check out this video we got of Aspen and Zero interacting now. Zero is doing a million times better, so much more relaxed.
It's amazing what we these animals can lessen when given the appropriate care and enrichment.

Hey guys... this is Mozey. She is a 15ft reticulated python.
She was brought into us a couple months ago needing a new home. Which we were happy to help with. Sadly, we didn't have anything appropriate for her out on display. So until we found something for her, she was living in our back room.
(Which is an area we want to introduce you guys too as well)
During that time... we heard that our friends at Colorado Gator Farm experienced everyone's worst nightmare. They had a terrible fire where they lost quite a few animals.

When we heard that, we reached out to them to see if we could help.

And one of those ways was Mozey!!!

Now she is living in a gigantic enclosure where she can climb, explore, and do all the cool, reticulated python things.

We could not be happier the way things turned out. We took in a big snake needing a home. And found an amazing home that wanted a big snake. Where she will be used to educate an entirely new community!!!

Hey guys!!! Sorry, we've been quiet with our social media lately! We have been so distracted having a blast working hard and trying to make the Idaho Reptile Zoo the best it can be.
And while that's always gonna be the case, what's the point in working hard if we can't share it all with you guys?!?!
So get ready to start seeing A LOT more of us!!!

Aren't Alligators just the coolest!?!?!
Look how Gomer comes over excited, almost coming out of the water.
Then, once he realizes that there is no food or anything exciting going on, you can see him sink in the water.
But not all of the way... he still leaves those big beautiful eyes, ears, and nose out of the water, taking everything in just waiting for something exciting.
Just like they would in the wild always learning and taking everything thing in watching for prey and / or predators.

Have you ever heard of "Snake Tubing"? I know it sounds like a crazy extreme sport, but it is really just a see-through tube used to restrain snakes safely with minimal stress for examinations. While going through and cleaning our Rattlesnakes, we were able to tube them to safely remove them and give everyone a good exam to make sure they were doing well. Which they are. :) But it also gave us a great idea for a picture while examining their heatpits on their face.

How cool is that!?!?!

Its a little late... but we had our own Baby New Year!!!!
We have been impatiently watching these eggs like a pot about to boil.
Now we would normally take the egg out and place it in an incubator, but the crazy part about these geckos is that they actually lay them on the glass. SO THEY STICK TO THE GLASS!!!! That's insane right. But with that, we couldn't remove them without damaging the eggs. So again... we waited. And we watched.
And just after the new year... THEY HATCHED!!!!
We have these adorable babies set up on the counter by our baby tortoises... we thought it was fitting by the other babies.
If you wanna see the cutest things ever... then come warm up with us and say hi.

Oh and to answer everyone's question. We are open our normal hours except closed on Christmas!

We hope to see everyone this break!!!

For everyone looking for the perfect stocking stuffer... gift cards are always a great way to go.
And what better than one for the Idaho Reptile Zoo.
We can do gift certificates for anything from a one time visit for someone who has always wanted to come check it out.
Or even a full year membership for those who have come to check it out and absolutely love it!!!

Either way we are happy to be a part of your holiday celebrations. And can't wait to see you soon!!!

Last weekend, some of our staff were lucky enough to join other zoos, businesses, and the private sector together to raise funds for another international crocodilian conservation project at an amazing event... CROCFEST, which was hosted by Wild Florida in Kenansville, Florida, where we raised $40,000 USD for American crocodiles research on the southern coast of Guatemala!

This has definitely been a dream come true... we can't wait to start giving back more for conservation near and far.

It's so nice when things work out for everyone.
Our rescue has been so successful and growing like crazy, to the point where it needed more space than we could offer them.
And as bitter sweet as it was, the axe room a couple doors down moved out and freed up a space for us to move on in and expand like crazy.
To the point we were lucky enough to partner with Daniel and Renee, an amazing reptile couple who love their animals, and have always wanted to start their own reptile store.
So we asked them if they would be up for teaming up our rescue and their retail store!!! And they were excited and we all jumped at the chance for all of us to expand.
So now, thanks to them, when you adopt an animal you are able to get EVERYTHING they need.
Or if you have an animal at home, they have EVERYTHING you'll ever need. (Feeders, lights, enclosures, EVERYTHING)

So everyone go check them out Reptile Alley, LLC for all of your needs.

Working with these animals every day, we build a relationship with each and every one of them. One relationship that has had some of the biggest ups and downs is our relationship with Rex, our blackthroat monitor.
It's one that Tyler and Aspen work on every day. Both have tried a lot of the same approaches and some completely different. But whatever they're doing is evidently working.
Rex has never been so trusting and relaxed in all the years we've had him, and it's an AMAZING feeling for us to see such a dramatic change for the better in our animals' behavior.

"It's only when the keeper and the kept lose their fear of each other that the magical understanding begins."

When we remodeled the baby alligator enclosures, we had the idea of putting our little "Alligator Play Place" in front of it.
Even though we were a little hesitant to see how it would work out.
But we are so excited to see that it is not only a positive way for our younger visitors in the obvious ways the toy was intended. But it's also amazing for them to get that close to the alligators in such a positive way.
And really it's also a great way for the alligators to get more accustomed to visitors in their windows.
I guess we'll have to get more of these "play places" around the zoo.
What do you think? Maybe even some for the older kids too!?!?!

After 2 1/2 years.... the ALLIGATORS ARE GETTING A REMODEL!!!
Their enclosures were great, don't get me wrong. But everything can always be better or improved.
One thing we always felt could be improved with our alligators' enclosures is accessibility and visibility. Visibility, especially for our younger guests and anyone else who couldn't see over the walls into their enclosures.
Those steps were great... but we wanted to give everyone the chance to get really up close to them... in the safest way possible, of course.
Sooooo we ripped out the old metal and put in some new walls with WINDOWS!!!!
While we still have some fine tuning and small details to finish up... we are so excited about how it's turning out.
We hope you like it as much as we do!!!!

Since the day we moved in and started getting stuff going, our back wall has been begging for some sort of artwork. We were so lucky to have to put out an AMAZING mural along our side walls. So, with our back wall, we wanted to try something a little different. And thought a big "sign" would be best. Plus, we love our alligators. So we put 2 and 2 together, and contacted the incredible who took that and ran with it to create this wonderful piece to ensure everyone knows where they are having the best time ever!!!!

ADOPTED!
The key to any turtle or tortoise diet is VARIETY! These guys are omnivores which means they need a mix of animal protein and plant matter. Conveniently the ratio is 50/50. They can eat a variety of different proteins such as mealworms, dubia roaches, hornworms, scrambled eggs, and even pinky mice and quail chicks!

ADOPTED!
A common question we get about these guys is "How much room do they need?" This is a good rule of thumb:
Length = 10x adult length
Width = 5x adult length
Height = 3x adult length
Bigger is always better and they will love the extra room to move around!
