𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 has been so exhilarating AND so challenging: a whirlwind of increased business, new adventures and responsibilities, and fantastic educational opportunities as I pursued more knowledge to further make an impact on the health and performance of the horses I'm privileged to call clients. It also came with losses of beloved horses, the most heat intense and smoke filled summer EVER, and ended in a personal struggle trying to balance an injury and ongoing rehab on my foot while working, and the pull of sudden family needs that took more attention than I had hours in the day. I tend to get pretty stoic when things "go south" and don't like to admit when I'm in the weeds. I was definitely in the thick of it and still have apologies to make from where I dropped the ball administratively. (Can I just say the struggle is real for a sole proprietor?) I have so appreciated everyone's understanding and support as I sorted through the tough stuff. Let's be clear though, I LOVE my work and am so passionate about helping your horse be the best version of themselves for whatever goals you have in mind. Improving how they feel, move, perform, age and meet the requests asked of them is my jam, my passion and what I continue to obsess about. I took advantage of the holiday break to assess business strengths and weaknesses and am excited to move forward in 2025 with improvements while continuing to offer best practice, hands-on bodywork modalities for your horses. Let's GOOOOO!!

What a pleasure to be partnering with Idaho Youth Ranch to provide holistic comfort and bodywork to the many horses that provide equine-assisted therapy and emotional recovery to our community's at-risk youth, adults and families. Horses are incredibly intuitive beings and their graciousness and sensitivity make them invaluable partners for this work. Did you know a horse can hear your heartbeat from 4 feet away? And like many therapists, these horses need their own form of emotional grounding and physical release, which is why I am honored to be a part of their wellness plan.

Long toes only affect the navicular right?

The leg has a series of joints. The metacarpo-phalangeal joint (fetlock), the proximal interphalangeal joint and distal interphalangeal joint (Pastern and coffin). Each one of these joints is a centre of rotation and because of how the digit is not underneath the limb, but in front off, each of these joints is profoundly affected by the distance from its centre of rotation to the point at which the ground acts through the hoof. In the form of the turning force (moment).
An increased turning force must be counteracted by whatever keeps those joints from descending under the load, the tendons AND ligaments.

Hence why long toes affect ALL of the soft tissue structures on the back of the leg. Both tendons and the suspensory!

If you would like this information clarified, explained in simpler terms and would like an introductory lesson in equine digit biomechanics then join myself and The study of the equine hoof on the 3rd Oct at 7pm BST where I will be doing just that.

PSA time 😀

Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of things can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of hay or grass) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.

As always, please be sure to consult with your vet regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE - I have found the gentle, slow holds and stretches of this technique to be especially beneficial for horses with tactile defensiveness, chronic pain, emotional trauma, scar damage, or pelvic asymmetry, as well as young horses first being introduced to bodywork and senior horses who might not tolerate standard sports massage techniques. I consider all these factors and more when assessing a horse and target each session to their individual needs. Questions about MFR? Comment below and I will address them in another post!

Prioritizing self-care is hard! We wear so many hats, and it's easy to let self-care slip to the bottom of the priority list. But, I realize that by putting myself at the top of the list, I can perform better in all those roles because I feel so much better. And I can especially show up more profoundly for your horses and your team. So here's to getting back to some self-care basics. What are your favorite self-care go-to's?

I am beyond grateful for the owners, riders and trainers I have the pleasure to work with, and of course for their amazing horses. It is a privilege to be allowed in their space, and partnering with them to facilitate healing and optimal wellness is a gift. I also have so much gratitude for others in the industry I have learned from and those friends and body workers who share their beautiful work and inspire me to be better every day! Thank you for supporting !

Autumn is my favorite season for bodywork sessions. 🧡🍂 Love, love the sweater weather without jackets in the afternoon, slightly fuzzy, soft coats on the horses, the flies (mostly) gone, and the horses - so receptive, especially my clients who are in regular wellness/maintenance plans. They have performed well, trained well, are happier, and less stressed. Like this guy who was all in on a beautiful fall day! 🍁💛 I hope you are all enjoying it as much as we are while it lasts! (Not talking about less daylight...lol.)

After seeing results with my own horse and that of several clients, I am so excited to be a part of affiliate program for their ! I found I was referring this system frequently along with exercise recommendations after discovering back discomfort, poor musculature, ineffective posture or lack of hind end engagement. This system is also very effective as part of a rehab program for certain clinical conditions. What I also love is that it is backed by independent peer-reviewed clinical research. The system comes with a saddle pad (either English or western) and two sets of bands (an abdominal band and hindquarter band) and is offered in multiple sizes - even mini! Here's a short list of issues that can be addressed with this system:
🎯 inverted posture
🎯asymmetrical hind end movement
🎯poor engagement
🎯poor muscle group development
🎯 recovery from diagnosed musculoskeletal or neurological conditions (such as EPM)
🎯 recovery from colic surgery
🎯rehab from diagnosed conditions of the back, including ‘kissing spines’
🎯conditioning a young horse
🎯bringing an older horse back into work

The Equiband® Pro system can be used on horses of any age or discipline, providing they are free of any undiagnosed lameness or neurological disorder. You should always check with your vet for contraindications.

* The Equiband® Pro system is not a substitute for veterinary care, and as such, veterinary advice should be sought prior using it.

See the link in my bio for more info or DM me with questions. As part of ordering through my link I will set you up with proper fitting if you are local and exercise recommendations for your specific needs.
