Did you know I have Instagram? Occasionally, I’m trendy and make things like this. 😆
Do you feel like this? Inspired by @jackandjilldogtraining, I used to feel this way when I took Layla or Potato out.
Nicer weather, as it slowly happens, brings out more dogs, more children on moving objects, more EVERYTHING. If you’re dreading this time of year, now is a great time to work with a dog trainer. Walks don’t have to be stressful for you or your dog! Let’s start working through those big feelings of theirs.

February is almost over, and spring seems to be a ways off. Even if it is, it's still a great time to brush up on recall skills with your dog!
When you call your dog, what are you calling them back for? Are you leaving the fun place? Did you notice they were doing something that you didn't like?
The cue "COME" is most commonly used when working on recall. But what if I told you it has to be a skill that's trained not when we're trying to get our dog's attention in moments that might be tense? Have you used the word come? Is it not working as well as you would have thought?
The great news is that teaching a recall cue doesn't always have to be about waiting for your dog to be far away. What if you just wanted your dog to check in with you?
Recall is one of my favorite things to train, and starting small with this cue can lead to great moments like the one in this video. I'm asking Potato to come back in the woods, and she does! We had to work hard to get where we're at.
My slots for new clients are full until March 8th, but it's a great time to get your in person lessons scheduled if you haven't already.
Email [email protected] to get started!
Moving near the greenbelt was difficult for Potato at first, but I’m glad I already had the tools in my belt to help her feel successful. There was a time in our lives when going to any area like this was hard for both of us.
Here we’re working on eye contact (she’s prone to staring at my treat bag). This is how good training should look. Boring, no wild reactions, and reinforcing for eye contact.
Now is the best time to start working on your dog’s leash reactivity, restart your leash walking, working around distractions or brushing up on your training. Spring will be here before you know it! Don’t wait!

Butters on a Walk
Leash walking is a common activity for dogs and their humans. But sometimes your nice calm walk can be dreaded by your dog's behavior on leash! Leash manners, pulling and reactivity on leash are my biggest inquiries from new clients.
Think about what your dog enjoys on the walk and why you enjoy taking the walk with them. Take Butters for example. This guy is adopted from the Idaho Humane Society and his mom hit the jackpot when she adopted him! Butters is great with dogs, cats, children and he's a dream on a leash. Butters' walk looks a lot like this when I get to spend time with him. He loves to sniff, mark on trees and bushes, and occasionally he'll check in with me for a piece of cheese. He can have access to all of these things on a loose leash and I let him choose where we're going!
What does your dog enjoy doing most on their walk? What do you like about your walk with your dog? If the answer is "I don't look forward to our walks," then say no more! Let me help you with your dog's leash walking.
I can help with:
-Leash pulling
-Leash biting
-Reactivity on leash
-Distractions while on a walk
Winter is when most dog parents stop focusing on their leash skills, but there's plenty of things to work on while we wait for the weather to warm up.

Happy February!
I spent the last two days cutting up treats and prepping enrichment for my own dogs since winter crept back into play.
Since starting up Mannered Misfits, I’ve had consultations with five new clients and I’m meeting with a sixth this week! I’ve also had lessons with five established clients who were able to connect with me after I left my job at IHS.
I love being able to do this full time!
All trainers might be a bit different in what they offer, but this is a great time to talk about how I accept new clients.
Any new clients that have interest in working with me start with a consultation virtually or a good old fashioned phone call.
Why start with a virtual consultation? In my experience, I have a bit of information to obtain about the dog and their behavior history while clients can feel like they’re being heard. With a dog present, management can often have to take over versus a constructive conversation. Virtual consultations allow me to prioritize your time and gives me what I need to begin your behavior modification plan. I’ll make my recommendations for further lessons based on the current situation and the client’s personal schedule. I then begin the work on designing your plan and working with you and your dog to set you up for success!
My website is under final edits with gracious help of a friend and my business cards have been ordered. If you’ve thought about hiring a dog trainer, now is the time!
