This is the time of year where we get a huge influx of people needing to find their birds new homes. This is not a post to judge, but instead an informational post for those that need options!

This information is intended to be suggestions only. Please use your best judgment when rehoming your pets. Parrots N Stuff is not responsible for any problems that may arise from the rehoming process.

With the lack of rehoming services in Idaho, it is vital to keep a few things in mind. Remember that there is an amazing rescue available with What the Flock Rescue. If you are wanting to rehome on your own here are some recommendations, and warnings!

Craigslist is probably the #1 platform for rehoming animals, but obviously it comes with risks. Some of the risks are as follows:

There are obvious scams. If a situation seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts.

There are people on craigslist who claim they are rescues, but instead they “rescue” these pets for a rehoming fee or free and turn around and sell them for a much higher price. This is not rescuing; this is flipping for profit.

It is not a good idea to list a pet as “free to a good home”. This allows people not only to flip them, but also allows people to get a pet without much thought, without the knowledge of what they are getting themselves into, or how to properly care for the pet.

A rehoming fee should be just that, a rehoming fee. Meant to make people think before they invest, and ensure the pet gets a good home. A rehoming fee should never be the same as what the cost is for a sweet, never before owned, handfed baby.

Applications and questionnaires are so important. Rehoming a pet should not be taken lightly and will require work and time to find the right home.

An application should include as many questions as you can think of in regard to what is best for your individual bird and their needs. Ask all the questions, the tough questions, for example: what circumstances would force you to have to rehome your pet? How would you tolerate bad behavior like biting, screaming, aggression etc., what are your biggest concerns (trust me, you want people to have concerns)?

If someone is not willing to complete an application, they more than likely are not going to put the work into the necessary care of your pet. Not only does the application help find the right home, but it helps w**d out the people looking for a cheap or free bird, or like I said before flipping a bird for profit.

Be honest. If you are in a hurry to rehome and feel you have to sugar coat details of your bird, then your best bet would be to hand your bird over to a rescue. Birds especially are so prone to go into the endless cycle of a rehoming, and it is not fair to the birds. Honesty will get you a lot further, with a far better chance of a great home.

Make sure you are making the right decision in rehoming your bird. Springtime has the highest rate of rehomes because its hormone season. Birds are difficult, hard to understand, and sometimes you just need a little support. If you are considering rehoming based off of a behavioral issue come talk to us, let us help you find alternatives that may help prevent you from rehoming a pet. Please know you can always be honest with us, we are a judgment free zone, and willing to help any way we can. Often times some simple adjustments can change things around quite quickly. With that said, if you have no choice but to rehome, we understand that too, we understand there are life circumstances that are sometimes out of our control, again we are a judgment free zone!

Create a little “birdie Biography” for the new home. So many times, we see birds that have been rehomed and there is no information passed along. This not only creates a challenge for the new owners but can greatly affect the bird.

Include the big details like age, if DNA sexing has been done (send proof if possible), the vet they have gone to, if it is microchipped, how often they need groomed, etc.

Include the small details: their favorite treats, bedtime routines, their current diet, favorite toys, how they like to bathe, etc. Sometimes the tiny details help the most!

Lastly, everyone’s situation is different, but a lot of times we see people frustrated with the new homes because they are no longer in contact with them. If you are going to rehome a pet, in most cases, it is unfair to the new owners, and the pet to continue an ongoing relationship. There should be no expectations. In rare cases this has been a beautiful relationship, but in most cases, it makes the new owners feel that it is never really their pet, and it can conflict with the relationship and bonding of the pet to their new owners. Sometimes when we love a pet, we have to learn that we have to let them go completely in order for everyone to feel comfortable and happy.

Here's a reminder to bathe your birds frequently, especially as our air conditioners turn on and dry everything up. It is vital for a birds health to have baths to maintain healthy skin and feather health! Here are a few ways to bathe them:
*A bird bath or big dish
*Spray bottle on mist setting, even just a few mists over the top of them works well
*Take them in the shower with you, they even make shower perches for birds!
* Do a sink bath

Happy bathing!

Hi all! If anyone besides us posts a link to anything, DO NOT CLICK ON IT! We have had a huge influx of scams being posted on our page. They are mostly fake profiles posting links to supposed bird groups, birds for sale, etc. I do everything I can to block and delete, but within a matter of minute's there are dozens of links posted, and I am not always able find and delete them all.

Hey Nampa - have you seen this lost domesticated cockatiel? His name is PepperJack.
He was last seen on Tuesday, April 2, in the area of Dooley, east of 12th Ave Rd, behind D & B in south Nampa.
The owner has asked that we check our yards, patios and other places where he might be hunkered down to stay dry and warm. They’ve walked miles looking for him and so far, no luck.
🦜 PepperJack (the bird) is gray and white with orange cheeks and he has a red band on his left leg. He is described as smart, friendly and handsome.
If you find him, or if you’ve seen him, please contact us by messenger and we’ll connect you with PepperJack’s owner.

Springtime Madness!

Tis the Season: Working through the hormones

Please remember we are here to help you troubleshoot!

This is the time of year where you want to pull your hair out, and often times have no idea why your bird suddenly hates you. It is caused by a breeding season influx of hormones, and just like with Teenagers, they don’t always handle the changes well. There are many different problems that may arise when your bird is sexually mature, and springtime comes. These are problems that sometimes will subside rather quickly and there are others that are much longer lasting. Here is a quick guide to how to handle some of the most popular problems and what is going on with your bird.

Screaming: Ignore bad behavior (yes, we know, easier said than done!). A large reason why your bird is screaming is to call you in. At this time, you need to ignore the screams and only react when your bird is quiet. If it gets totally out of hand you can cover your birds’ cage for a short amount of time, you may have to move your bird to a quieter, darker room, or (controversially) use water. What we suggest if you are using water is to have a “bad bird bottle” that does not resemble the bathing bottle. You don’t want to make your bird afraid of water, as bathing is a vital part of their overall health. For our personal birds we have just a normal spray bottle on the mist setting that we spray our birds with. We then have our “bad bird bottle”, that is more of a plant mister on the straight spray setting. It is shaped and colored differently than the bathing bottle. Our birds know that when we get this bottle out, it is time to be quiet. *Keep in mind that what works for one may not work for another, but you're not hurting or making your bird fearful of water. When we have customers who have done everything by the book and still cannot get the screaming to slow down this option has allowed them to keep their bird instead of rehoming, so it may be the right option in your situation.

Aggression: This is often times one of the most difficult aspects of this point in the birds’ life. Often times they will turn on those they love the most, and start liking someone else, or no one else. The aggression obviously varies from lunging, biting, chasing, etc. This too is something that should be ignored as much as possible. This sometimes leads to a bird who has to spend more time in the cage. Make sure to have plenty of toys to challenge them and keep them busy chewing and thinking.

Plucking: When a bird starts over preening or plucking it is important to get a full vet check to rule out any underlying issues. We do see a lot of birds that will start plucking when the surge of hormones comes (especially during molting season as well). It is important to remember that if you make a big deal out of this new habit, so will they. As with the other problems, don’t acknowledge but instead be proactive in helping. Supply your birds with toys, plenty of bathing, attention when they are quiet (even if it is attention from a distance), and a healthy diet. Much like us diet plays a huge role in a healthy bird both inside and out. It can affect their moods, their feather condition, skin, etc.

Territorialism: During this time a lot of birds feel a stronger desire to protect their home. This can lead to problems interacting around the cage, cleaning, feeding, etc. While there is no quick trick to end this behavior, you just need to learn the workarounds that help for your bird. This could be simple things like changing toys around in the cage, switching up feeding times, looking into parrot sleep scheduled, bathing before cleaning or feeding, etc. All birds are different and react to things differently, so you’ll have to find what suits you best!

Helpful Remedies to try:
Avian Calm: natural calming agent to help hormonal, aggressive, screaming, plucking birds.

Feather Fast: Natural supplement that nourishes the body from the inside out. Helps to stop and/or prevent plucking, and over preening.

Feather Glo: organic red palm oil for skin and feather health

Healthy Diet: A healthy diet can make a tremendous difference in a bird’s overall health. Ask us today how to get started on a well -balanced diet!

Variety of Toys: Essential for a healthy, happy, and active bird. Having new toys of different types and styles can help a bird stay mentally and physically healthy.

Water: The cheapest and easiest way to help improve the health of your bird. Bathing is vital and should be done regardless of if your bird likes it or not!

If you have been in and spoke to us about Sun Conures, you'll be the first to know we don't often recommend them. They are one of the top rehomed birds because people buy them because they are pretty, but realize how loud they are. With that said, if you are one of those amazing people who don't mind their noise, and see the nothing but the good, we have an opportunity to get some in. They would be $1200.00 each, and a non refundable $300 deposit would need to be put down! As much as we bring awareness to the cons of a sun conures, there are also a lot of pros, we just suggest doing a lot of research! Let us know asap if you're interested, or even just have questions!
