From Sully Peters: This sweet boy needs a home. He is 9 years old, sooooo lovable, fully potty trained and just funny as can be. We gave it a week with our two boys but they are just not playing so nice. Fozzie needs to be an only dog. He is great with kids, loves walks and car rides. It breaks our hearts that we are taking him back to Salt Lake City tomorrow. If you know ANYONE who wants a true companion please let me know.

Rawhide chews are not christmas gifts; they are unplanned ER vet visits just waiting to happen!
They are terrible for dogs but stores sell them because people keep buying them. Rawhide are harmful from processing with irritating chemicals, the small choking hazard pieces, the swallowed piece sits in the stomach and irritates your dogs stomach for months or forms a complete blockage from a big piece or several smaller pieces clumping together in the dogs intestines.

Canine intestinal blockage or foreign body surgery costs about 2-3k in this area to treat an obstruction. That $7 candy cane rawhide doesn't look so cute now, does it?

These are the most common rawhide risks:

Contamination. As with pet toys, rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination is possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats.

Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture processes. This can cause problems, including diarrhea and vomiting.

Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Depending on its size and where it is located, a local vet may be able to remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

It doesn't take much. Similar to the way small pieces of hair clog a drain, the small pieces of rawhide can clump and block your dog similar to the various items pictured in the first photo below. This is usually a hard thing to diagnose because rawhide is skin. Xrays don't show skin very well so usually a contrast study with barium is needed. Typically a barium study runs $500-900 in this area. Once the blockage is found then the surgery or endoscopic retrieval can be done. The best case scenario is your dog is puking and pooping out the pieces and this can be painful it there's a pointed piece that injures the tissues on its way out.

Please save your dog some pain and yourself hours waiting at an emergency clinic and thousands of dollars.

Don't buy rawhide. I have a much better solution so contact me.

Help out some good people:

“Hi Bernadette!! I I’m wondering if you know anyone looking for a cat or kitten companion? We live in the country and unfortunately, often times people dump their cats out where we live. We take them to the humane society to get them fixed when they show up, but the last two were pregnant and have since had their litter so we are now overrun. I’ve been able to get about 4 of them from those litters neutered and vaccinated, have appointments for 2 more next week, so there is a mixture if some neutered and some not. I don’t have the heart to take them to the humane society because honestly, we can pay to feed them and are continuing to neuter and vaccinate and I feel like as long as we can do that, I don’t want to put that burden on the shelter and use their resources that they could use for cats that are truly in need. With that said, they’re fed and healthy, but we need to find some of these guys good, loving homes.”

8 Benefits Of Microchipping Your Dog

Should your dog ever get lost, peace of mind is the most important benefit of microchipping your dog. One study of 7,700 stray animals showed dogs without microchips made it home 21.8% of the time, vs 52.2% for microchipped dogs. Here are some other benefits.

🐾Reputable services like shelters, veterinary clinics and some police stations can notify owners when they find a microchip.
🐾The microchip can’t be tampered with or removed (at least, not without surgery).
🐾It’s permanent. Ideally, the microchip should never need replacement.
🐾Your personal information is not visible. And it can be updated when you change your address or phone number (or if your pet goes to a new home).
🐾Microchips are harder to lose than your dog’s regular tags. But microchips can migrate
🐾The cost is low.
🐾Implanting the chip is a quick procedure.
🐾There’s less stress on shelters. Microchipped dogs turned into shelters or vet clinics are scanned and returned to their owners faster.

Other options include GPS and Bluetooth Trackers your pet can wear!

Here are some Halloween tips for dog owners to keep your furry friends safe and happy during the spooky season:

1. Costume Comfort: If you decide to dress up your dog, make sure the costume is comfortable, non-restrictive, and doesn’t obstruct their vision, breathing, or movement.
2. Identification: Ensure your dog has proper identification, like a collar with updated tags and a microchip. With many people coming and going on Halloween, it’s best to be prepared.
3. Keep Candy Away: Halloween candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free treats, can be harmful to dogs. Keep it out of their reach.
4. Quiet Time: The constant doorbell ringing and noise from trick-or-treaters can stress your dog. Create a quiet space for them away from the commotion.
5. Jack-O’-Lanterns: Be cautious with lit pumpkins, as curious dogs may knock them over or get burned. Consider using battery-operated lights instead.
6. Decorations: Keep Halloween decorations out of your dog’s reach, as some can be a choking hazard or toxic if ingested.
7. Stranger Danger: If your dog is nervous around strangers, consider using a baby gate to prevent them from getting too close to trick-or-treaters.
8. Walk in Daylight: If you’re taking your dog for a walk on Halloween, do so during daylight hours to avoid any nighttime spookiness.
9. Treats for Dogs: You can make special dog-friendly Halloween treats or buy them from pet stores. This way, your dog can join in on the festive snacking.
10. Emergency Plan: Know the location of the nearest 24-hour emergency vet in case of any Halloween mishaps.
