There’s a new movie dropping this spring that every Great Dane lover needs to know about! The Friend stars a Harlequin Great Dane named Apollo (played by .the.great.dane, a real-life gentle giant) alongside Naomi Watts and Bill Murray.

The story? A grieving writer inherits her late mentor’s beloved Great Dane, and—well, you know how these things go. A dog changes everything. 🖤

Congrats! You’ve officially leveled up to big dog parent status. 🎉 But raising a giant breed isn’t the same as raising your average pup—everything is bigger (including the challenges). So, what do you need to know to keep your gentle giant happy, healthy, and not taking over your entire couch? Here’s the rundown:

🐕 1️⃣ They’re Not Just Big—They’re Built Different
✔️ Joints matter. Big dogs grow fast and put extra stress on their joints, so proper nutrition and targeted supplements are key.
✔️ They take up space. If you think they’ll stay off the couch, that’s adorable—double down on the training or make peace with the fact that they own your furniture now.

🍖 2️⃣ Feed for Function, Not Just Fullness
✔️ Giant breed pups need slow, steady growth. No overfeeding. Fast growth = joint issues later.
✔️ Skip the fillers. Your big dog needs real nutrition, not empty carbs.

🎓 3️⃣ Training is Mandatory
✔️ A 150-lb dog who doesn’t listen is a hazard, not a pet. Start training early and stick with it.
✔️ Teach "leave it" unless you enjoy wrestling a raw steak out of their mouth.

🏃 4️⃣ Exercise, But Make It Smart
✔️ Giant breed puppies should avoid high-impact exercise (no running marathons just yet).
✔️ Adult dogs? Regular, low-impact movement is key. Keep those joints happy!

🏡 5️⃣ Your Home is Theirs Now, Accept It
✔️ They will lean on you. Like, full-body weight lean.
✔️ Drool happens. It’s now part of your home décor.
✔️ Buy a big bed. (Or just give up and let them sleep in yours.)

🩺 6️⃣ Regular Vet Care is Non-Negotiable
✔️ Big dogs = big health needs. Stay ahead with preventative care.
✔️ Ask your vet about bloat prevention, because it’s no joke for giant breeds.

Raising a big dog isn’t always easy, but it’s 1000% worth it. They’ll steal your heart, your personal space, and probably your dinner—but you’ll never love anything more.

🐾 Saint Bernards: The Ultimate Snow Dogs ❄️

If you’ve ever seen a Saint Bernard bounding through fresh powder, you know—they were born for this. With their thick coats, massive paws, and legendary history as alpine rescue dogs, these gentle giants don’t just handle the cold… they thrive in it.

Ever wondered why they seem to light up when the snow starts falling? It’s in their DNA! These big, lovable snowplows were bred for the Swiss Alps, trekking through deep drifts to save stranded travelers. And even today, they embrace winter like it’s their personal playground—rolling in the snow, sniffing out hidden treasures, and proving once again that winter is a Saint Bernard’s time to shine.

🐕❄️ But even snow-loving giants need a little winter care! In our latest blog, we’re breaking down why Saint Bernards are built for the cold, what makes them love snowy adventures, and the safety tips you need to keep them happy all season long.

🔬 Quality You Can Trust—Because Our Dogs Take It Too 🐶

When it comes to supplements, not all are created equal. That’s why we go above and beyond to ensure every batch of our joint supplement meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and potency.

✅ Every batch is tested for ingredient potency—so what’s on the label is exactly what’s in the bottle.
✅ We screen for microbial and heavy metal contaminants—because safety isn’t optional.
✅ We check for purity and consistency—so your big dog gets the best support, every single time.

To do this, we use a Certificate of Analysis—a rigorous testing process that verifies the quality and safety of each batch before it reaches your dog’s bowl.

We take this seriously because we give it to our own dog, too. When you choose The Big Damn Dog Co., you're choosing transparency, integrity, and a commitment to your giant’s health.

🐶 Quality you can trust—because big dogs deserve the best.

Remember when your dog got way too used to you being home 24/7? Yeah, same. The pandemic didn’t just shift our lives—it completely transformed how we care for our pets.

Suddenly, work-from-home became normal, and our dogs? They got real comfortable with constant attention, midday walks, and endless snuggles. Adoption rates skyrocketed, pet-friendly workplaces became more common, and let’s be honest—our dogs now expect us to be their full-time personal assistants. 🐕💼

But beyond the extra belly rubs, COVID changed pet parenting for the long haul:
✔️ More pet-friendly lifestyles (because we need them with us)
✔️ Greater focus on pet health (regular vet visits & better nutrition)
✔️ Training & socialization struggles (hello, pandemic puppies!)
✔️ Separation anxiety is real (and we’re all figuring it out)

🐶✨ On the blog, we’re diving into how the pandemic reshaped pet parenting and what it means for dog owners today. Read it now! [Link below]

Big Dogs, Big Love… and Absolutely No Concept of Personal Space 🐾😂 Living with a giant breed means expecting the unexpected—like a 150-lb lap dog, surprise drool slings, and getting lovingly body-checked every time you walk through the door. But let’s be honest… we wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

Big dogs love BIG, and they make life happier, messier, and way more entertaining in the best way possible. So today, give your gentle giant an extra treat (and maybe a towel for the drool), and soak up every second of their goofy, oversized love.

🐾 Be Your Dog’s Best Advocate—Because No One Knows Them Better Than You!

Your dog trusts you for *everything*—their food, their health, their training, their entire life. But here’s the thing… not all pet advice is created equal.

❌ "This is the best food for all dogs!" (Says who?)
❌ "Your vet must know best about everything!" (Even if they don’t specialize in giant breeds?)
❌ "Shock collars work instantly!" (At what cost?)

Being a pet parent means being your dog’s voice—asking questions, digging deeper, and making informed choices that actually work for your dog. Whether it’s finding the right vet, choosing a high-quality diet, or questioning outdated training methods, advocacy is everything.

In our latest blog, we’re breaking down how to:
✔️ Find reliable pet health information (without falling for marketing gimmicks).
✔️ Ask the right questions at the vet (because *you* should be part of the decision-making).
✔️ Choose the best food, supplements, and training for your gentle giant.

Because when it comes to your dog, you know best. 🐶💙

Finding the *right* joint supplement for a giant breed dog isn’t easy—most products aren’t made for dogs over 100 lbs, leaving big dogs underdosed and underserved. That’s why we created The Big Damn Dog Co.—because big dogs deserve better.

💬 Megan shared her experience:
"I looked all over for a supplement for our giant boy and finally found The Big Damn Dog Co. and have been so happy. Our boy is a 130lb Great Dane/German Shepherd mix, and he loves his vitamins morning and night. I feel confident he's getting what he needs."

That’s what we’re here for—to give giant breed dogs more, better years with high-quality, properly dosed joint support. Because when you have a BIG dog, their needs aren’t the same as the little guys.

Finding the right joint supplement for a giant breed dog can be tough—many formulas are one-size-fits-all and don’t account for the unique needs of big dogs. But we built ours differently—for giant breeds, with giant breed dosing, and giant breed results.

Here’s what Rebecca had to say:

"I’ve tried a few joint supplements for my Newfoundland, and this is the first one that actually feels like it was made for a dog his size. The dosing makes sense, the ingredients are solid, and he eats it without me having to hide it in something. Since starting it, he’s been moving more comfortably, especially getting up from lying down. I like that it’s specifically designed for giant breeds instead of being a one-size-fits-all formula."

✔️ Dosed for giant breeds—because a 180-lb dog needs more than a small-breed supplement.
✔️ Premium ingredients—glucosamine, chondroitin, eggshell membrane, and more.
✔️ Big-dog approved flavor—no tricks needed to get them to take it.

If you’ve been searching for a joint supplement that actually works for big dogs, we’ve got you covered. 🐕💚

Ear Cropping in Dogs: History, Procedure & Perspectives 🐾

Ear cropping is a practice that has been around for centuries, but it remains one of the most controversial topics in the dog world today. So, what’s the story behind it?

🔹 The History
Originally, ear cropping was done for working dogs—like guard dogs and hunting breeds—to prevent ear injuries in the field. Over time, it became part of certain breed standards, especially for breeds like Dobermans, Great Danes, and Boxers.

🔹 The Procedure
Ear cropping is a surgical procedure where part of the ear is removed and then taped to encourage an upright position. It’s typically done on puppies around 8–12 weeks old and requires extensive aftercare.

🔹 The Debate
✔️ Proponents argue that ear cropping maintains traditional breed appearance and can help prevent ear infections in some breeds.
❌ Opponents believe it’s unnecessary, as it’s a cosmetic procedure that alters a dog’s natural appearance without medical need.

🐶 At the end of the day, ear cropping is a personal decision—one that requires careful thought, research, and an understanding of the ethics and responsibilities involved.

💬 What are your thoughts on ear cropping? Drop your opinions in the comments—let’s discuss! 👇

02/03/2025

Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a life-threatening condition that can affect giant breed dogs. While gastropexy surgery is a preventative measure, a holistic approach can further reduce the risk:

- Feed Smaller, Frequent Meals: Divide daily food into 2–3 portions and use slow-feeder bowls to prevent rapid eating.

- Choose High-Quality Food: Opt for easily digestible dog food without fillers like corn, soy, or wheat.

- Manage Water and Exercise: Limit large water intake and avoid vigorous exercise 1–2 hours before and after meals.

- Create a Calm Feeding Environment: Feed in a quiet area to reduce stress and prevent gulping air.

Recognizing early signs of bloat—such as restlessness, a swollen abdomen, or unsuccessful attempts to vomit—is crucial. If you observe these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.
