The Lucas Learning Farm was established with the mission to restore the link between food producer and family consumers in order that families will be better able to teach their children about the origins of natural foods and the nutritional benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables. The Lucas Learning Farm is also committed to supporting schools’ efforts to teach youth about food and nutrition, and their efforts to help children make wise choices in their diet.

Capitol School students from Tuscaloosa had the opportunity to meet the baby goats and Clyde the donkey today. Of course, they wanted to name the goats. Tentative names include W***y, Milly, Tilly and Lilly. Team Building was part of the day as well and learning about managing the fields for growing, specifically the orchard and the blueberry patch.

Here comes summer at the Farm. Green beans are in and sweet corn is up. Recently some toddlers were treated to investigating the large outer leaves of our savoy cabbage. What a hoot!

The fresh lettuce is growing and growing. Happy red and green lettuces. Message us if you would like to pick up a bag in Tuscaloosa this week. Only $4 per bag! No pesticides; only natural fertilizers. It doesn't get better than this mix for a fresh salad.

Recently a group of elementary students came to visit and helped harvest lettuce and collards. They also helped plant a new apple tree and experienced wild hone bees in action all around us. It was a great day to host them!

Barred Rock chickens are some of the best layers and gentle birds you could have if you were raising them. Our new flock is now laying daily and we are excited to be able to offer our surplus for sale. PM if interested.

The feral farm cat is now making regular appearances and enjoying some real cat food. We have been able to give her some dewormer and something for fleas and ticks. She is a fierce creature who comes to us on her terms. Do not pet me she says, but "I will rub up against your legs if I feel like it." Not sure of a name for her, but you know it's only ok if she says so.

The basil loves the hoop house environment. It reduces bug attacks as well. It's hard to tell the plants have been pruned at all!

One of our summer favorites - fresh blue lake green beans and new red potatoes with homegrown onions and garlic in a cast iron skillet.....yep. It's all that. We also like to add sausage to the pan - so vegetarians and meat lovers can both enjoy a meal like this.

Thanks to all the FB folks who came out to pick up fresh produce this month from our small family farm. We love to share with local people in the community and FB helped us reach new friends. WE hope everyone loved the veggies as much as we do!
