We’ve all heard the saying “No hoof. No horse. “ Today we had everyone done at the farm, even the mini donkeys. All the horses here are on a 4 week barefoot trimming schedule and the donkeys are checked every 4 though usually trimmed every 8 weeks. It’s so important to have a good working relationship with your farrier/trimmer and we are lucky to have Allison Beth Charney as ours. It’s vital to be able to communicate with your trimmer about what you are seeing and work together to have the best outcome for the horses. We have some horses who like their feet on the shorter side, some that need more callus left on their sole to be comfortable, one with cushing and managing that, and some who are still transitioning from having front shoes. We all work together, have open conversations, ask questions, for the betterment of the horse. So be sure to thank your trimmer/farrier❤️

First up for the vacuum was Gus!
I wanted to make sure that he was comfortable and calm so first I used the dog vaccuum. It has 3 levels and it’s not as strong as the horse one. We started with it off, then upped the power using it on his shoulder and neck. He didn’t bat an eye so we went to the horse one. He was totally good with the low speed. The higher speed he didn’t quite like so, I back off to the slower speed ending on a good note. Lots of praise, scritches, and snacks. More work to be done to ensure he’s comfortable and relaxed while using it. He was a good kid:) who will be next???

I hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated during this heat wave. A special thanks to Josh for getting up all the fans so all the horses and donkeys(of course) can be as comfortable as possible. They enjoyed early turn out and will go out again later today. Till then AC and pool time for us:)

Busy week on the farm. Josh started opening the pool and continues to work on Gus’s run out. The fence and gates are up so it’s electric and the door now. Gus rubbed out one of his braids so he received a fresh cut from Lauren Leary. Dr Sears came over and worked on the new post that he made for our sign, it’s going to be so nice when it’s up:) Josh says he’ll get to that soon lol

Just a day on the farm. Lauren and Belle took Sprite and Banjo for a walk on the trails and had a great time:) Cleaned so much of the barn and the hay bins out back got a good scrubbin. Ended the night with a bath for Banjo, while Josh worked on putting up all the fans.

I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. We have been busy cleaning up the farm and working on projects. Of course taking some time to find some four leaf clovers 🍀 Josh has been working on finishing Gus’s paddock, I’ve been mowing/cleaning up, Lauren has been cleaning paddocks, and Alexis and Matt worked on clearing the trails. Soka continues to be oh so helpful and even started learning how to track, thank you Matt. It takes a village and I love mine❤️

This year when we did spring shots we had Gus and Sprite tested for cushings. Our senior resident, Mocha, has cushings and it is managed with prascend. In addition we test our hay, the tracks have little to no grass, slow feeder hay bags are weighed, and everyone is fed a low sugar diet or only forage diet. It turns out Gus is just “over fed forage” and we caught it early with Sprite.

Gus wanted to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. He was a very good kid today, just a little stretchy ride as he’s still getting over having Lyme.

I have been on the farm for over 12 years and owned the farm for 7….and in less than one week Gus did this with his royal rump lol Josh fixed it tonight and of course he had so much help❤️

Gelato says sometimes you just need a walk in the woods. It was such a beautiful day that Lauren took Gelato out for a walk in the woods. We have some trails that we try to enjoy year round:)

Welcome Sugar and her owner Carol to FHF! We picked up Sugar yesterday afternoon and she has been settling in great. Gelato is in love and can’t wait for her to join the herd.

Also Josh put in a new door latch for Gelato. He was BEYOoooond helpful lol

Happy 12th Birthday His Royal Roundess, Gus, Land Shark, Goose, Gustav! We love you so much! You have the biggest personality and Im so happy that I get to have you as mine. Love you. This wasn’t our best singing, Mitchell decided that he had to put his own spin on it lol

As the weather warms up Gus and I are slowly upping our workouts and prepairing for this years show season. He is a good kid and works really hard for me, trying his best. With a mom that’s a massage therapist he gets regular massage and chiropractic to keep him feeling his best. Last year I purchased the RevitaVet cold laser system. In this video Gus has on the pole cap, hock wraps, and back pad. He’s very expressive with his body work, his releases and yawns are very aggressive lol

Sometimes I just need a good laugh and some joy with all this rain, wind, and trees down. Thanks Gus❤️

Mitchell is just over two years at this point and he’s been a bit feral lol He is VERY attached to Joleen(his mom) and even taking him away from her when he can still see her causes both of them some stress. My long term goal is to be able to work with Mitchell independently, even with Joleen isn’t in sight. This year I signed him up for the Horsin' Around New England winter agility challenge. I have done this with Gus and Regal, it’s a fantastic winter activity that eases them into agility work and learning to answer some in hand questions. I'm all for showing the end result with no struggle, though let’s be honest it doesn’t start perfect, sometimes it’s got to suck at first lol This video is the first attempt with Mitchell todo the first challenge. The challenge is to figure eight through the cones stopping for three seconds in the middle. Easy enough right, well not so much lol. The challenging part is getting them to this challenge without me using the lead rope, it should always have a loop or smile in it. That gets more difficult with the halting in the middle. Mitchell needs to be in tuned with me and listening to my verbal and body cues. But here’s the thing he doesn’t know them yet so there are some instances where he asked some questions to gather understanding. One of those times you’ll see he doesn’t stop with me in the middle, he keeps going, I try to catch it sooner but he’s a bit braced so he keeps going. I then get in front of him and back him up, he doesn’t know how to yet so I get a few steps and carry on. He wasn’t being naughty he just doesn’t know the cues and expectations yet. The final piece to this is Joleen, she is in the indoor with us. She was in eye sight the entire time, but she didn’t do the exercise to show him it’s okay and during the session they didn’t visit until the end. You’ll here at the end of the video that Joleen started to be stressed and I was proud of both of them for working throug

My schedule has been so busy that Gus and I have been doing ground work on the days we don’t ride. Today we worked on some raised poles and he showed off his flag skills. I guess it’s time for me to run he says lol This kid gives me so much joy, the character that he is and the partnership that we both have worked and continue to work towards.❤️

Gus and I needed a little fun so after some ground work we played with the ball and worked with the hoola hoop for the Fall Fun agility course with Horsin' Around New England.
