Out of all the wonderful parrots that call our zoo “home,” Hungry, our yellow-headed Amazon parrot, is DEFINITELY the most likely to have a conversation with you! Our other birds tend to be a bit more shy when sharing their vocabulary, but Hungry is quite happy to show off! Phrases like “hello,” “how are you”, “arriba!”, and “Polly wanna cracker” are a great way to get him in a chit-chatting mood. Come see him all winter long in our critter room along with all his other feathered friends! 🦜🪶🦜

🐢❄️ Nothing like a warm indoor swim on a frigid November day! ❄️🐢

This is Tiny, our smallest (and spunkiest) box turtle. He’s got quite an attitude, so he lives separate from our other box turtles in a suite all his own. He enjoys fresh crickets, cozy naps, and a nice soak in a hot tub at the end of a long day. Tiny can be found in our Critter Room, lounging away in his water dish until someone brings him a delicious snack. He’s just such a cutie! 🥰

🦜❤️It’s almost cuffing season, and these two are a perfect pair ❤️🦜

Tiny (front) and Rainbow (back) are our mated pair of blue-and-gold macaws who live here at the zoo. These two will mate for life, and can commonly be seen grooming, snuggling, and even kissing one another! Yes, actually kissing. 😘 These birds will mate for life, and can get depressed when separated. Therefore, we do everything we can each and every day to make sure they will always be together. Tiny and Rainbow can always be found in our large indoor aviary with some of their fellow feathered friends. 🪶🪶🪶

Yeah Zoo Keeper Reanne! ❤️🎉

Congratulations to Head Zoo Keeper Reanne on being voted our October employee of the month! Reanne has been working for Doc’s for over 4 years. She works full-time making sure all of the animals that live at Doc’s are healthy & happy each day. That may sound like lots of lighthearted frolicking with cute fuzzy animals, but trust us, being a Zoo Keeper is no easy task. Thru all types of weather, she reliably shows up to give our animals the top notch care they deserve. Her job doesn’t include just caring for the animals, she also takes care of the clerical side of running our zoo including maintaining our records & managing our broad inventory of supplies. Reanne is always up for a challenge & happily takes on any task. Reanne’s love for her job shows in the positive attitude that she has each day with customers & her co-workers. Reanne is a great mentor to the Zoo Keepers on her team. Reanne leads by example & is always willing to take the time to help her co-workers learn. People & animals all agree; Reanne is an extremely valued member of the Doc’s team. 😀
Kersten decided to give our employees the opportunity to vote each month to award one of their co-workers the title of Employee of the month. Along with this title, Reanne got a gift certificate & cash & will be treated to lunch at the Timeline with Doc, Kersten, Shannon, Steve, & Tammy. Thank you Reanne! We appreciate what you do & we are extremely lucky to have you on our team!

👀 Peek-a-boo, I see you! 👀

Our western hognose, Hoggy, poked his head out of his burrow to say “good morning!” Hoggy here is technically the only venomous snake that lives here at the zoo, but don’t worry! The western hognose’s venom is extremely mild, and tends to only lead to a little bit of itchiness. In recent years, Hoggy has become quite tame and used to being handled by humans. We are so lucky to have such an interesting and adorable snake here at Doc’s Zoo. 🐍❤️

📰🗞️The zoo is in need of NEWSPAPER!🗞️📰

We use newspaper not only to line cages, but it also provides enrichment for our birds, like Rainbow here, who loves to SHRED!

If you have any newspaper to spare and would like to contribute to the zoo, please feel free to stop by Doc’s HD and donate! It would mean so much to the staff and critters alike.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

🍁🍂Fall is here, and that means more inside activities for the critters!🍂🍁

Now that the weather has changed, it’s even more important to provide enrichment to all of our animals! The ferrets become especially stir-crazy, and we try to find new and fun ways to keep them entertained. We had a very special person donate LOADS of toys for Noodle and Ozzy. Here, you can see them playing with a mat that contains a bunch of hidden toys and treats. It’s always so much fun for our zookeepers to spend quality time with each and every animal that calls Doc’s zoo “home.”

That being said, the zoo is open year-round, and the animals would love to have you come visit and spend some time with them!

🥹 Our little Nessie is growing up so fast, and so is her hair! 🥹

Our beloved fluffy calf is growing in her thick adult coat, which means she is almost prepared for a rough Wisconsin winter! Scottish highland cows are an ideal breed of cattle to raise here in the Midwest because of their tolerance of the extreme cold. In the spring, they will shed out their thick coats in exchange for a lighter, cooler hairdo. Until then, we encourage you to give her some scratches and see how warm her winter coat is for yourselves! ❄️

🙌🏻Spikette is showing off that beard, loud and proud! 🙌🏻

Bearded dragons get their name from their unique skin under their throat. When threatened, their “beards” turn black and puff out to intimidate predators. In this case with Spikette, he is simply fanning out in order to collect more UVB rays to keep his bones strong. You can tell he’s in a good mood because his beard is nice and yellow, just like the rest of his body. He enjoys his days, basking away under his heat lamps.

‼️LOOK WHO POPPED OUT TO SAY “HI!” ‼️

Casper here is one of our three beloved sugar gliders here at the zoo. Since he is nocturnal, we very rarely get to see his sweet face. However, he decided to say a friendly “hello” during his routine cage cleaning this morning! Like other sugar gliders, Casper has very large eyes to be able to see trace amounts of light with clarity at night. However, Casper is albino, which means his eyes have no pigment. This trait typically causes poorer vision overall, and might explain why we tend to see Casper more during daylight hours while his normally-pigmented sugar glider friends rarely make appearances. Maybe you’ll get lucky and catch him peeking out of his pouch, too!

Have you ever had a chance to see a ball python this close before? If you haven’t, you may be noticing the strange holes above their mouth! These are called “pit organs,” and they are special sensors that have evolved to detect changes in temperature in the environment around them. This makes it easier for the snake to pinpoint warm-blooded prey and strike with precision and accuracy. Larry here can strike and constrict his meals within mere seconds!

Our sulcata tortoises are voracious eaters, but there is nothing they love more than watermelon! Spike, our three-legged tortoise, enjoys chomping away. As a matter of fact, these tortoises have strong enough bites to devour the melon, rind and all, with ease. Even though it is their favorite treat, we are sure to give it sparingly. Watermelon is high in phosphorous, which can harm them in high doses and make their shells soft over time. Everything in moderation 😋🍉🐢

While we have tons of amazing and exotic animals here, it is always so much fun to see the local wildlife enjoying our zoo as well! Dozens of native frogs have taken up residence in the water features in our sulcata tortoise enclosure. Many of you ask us how the frogs got there. Well, the truth is, they moved in all on their own! Come see them while you can, as the temperatures will soon be cooling and these cold-blooded critters will burrowing into their new winter homes before long!

Yet again, we find our furry little ferret, Ozzy, snoozing away in his comfy bed. As the days get shorter, our ferrets tend to nap even more than normal. It seems that they will catch some zzz’s just about anywhere. The zookeepers definitely find his cute little yawns to be contagious!

With summer drawing to a close, our critters can be found soaking up every last bit of sunshine they can, like Springer here! Even if you didn’t get a chance to visit us this summer, we would like to remind you that Doc’s Zoo is open all year long. We have gotten a lot of questions lately about what we do with our animals now that summer is ending. Here at Doc’s Zoo, our animals are always on display, and we make sure that each and every one of our critters has appropriate care and facilities. Our cold-blooded and sensitive animals move inside our critter barn, but the rest of our animals acclimate well to the change in temperatures. We LOVE sharing our animals with each and every one of you, no matter the season! 🌸☀️🍂❄️

Alamo is our Texas longhorn steer, and he’s quite the sight to behold! His horns span more that 8 feet tip to tip, making him one of our largest animals here at Doc’s Zoo. That being said, he is a gentle giant who loves a good scratch behind the ears and a pat on the nose. He’s as sweet as pie, as they say! He loves visitors, so consider coming out and seeing the handsome Alamo for yourself at Doc’s Harley-Davidson!

Ferrets sleep anywhere from 14 to 18 hours a day, and our ferrets Noodle and Ozzy know how to nap in style! There are no shortage of cuddly spots to catch some zzz’s, and they make sure to test each of them out daily. Doc’s Zoo is ferret snooze approved! ✅

Every once in a great while, our sugar gliders make an appearance here at the zoo! This is Casper, our albino sugar glider. He is snacking on a nectar pod, a specially formulated sugar glider treat. He uses his opposable thumbs to hold the cup while he licks away! It takes a very special treat to lure this nocturnal little guy out in the daylight, but we are always happy to spoil him. 💗

Our sulcata tortoises (also known as African spur-thighed tortoises) are some of the coolest critters we have here at Doc’s Zoo. However, they also require more care than almost any of our other animals. For example, these prehistoric giants have beaks that constantly grow and require regular trimmings. This is Patrick, and his beak will be in need of a trimming soon. Even though it’s a challenge to keep them happy and healthy, all the cute smiles make all the hard work with it!

Here’s a face we rarely get to see! This is Bubbles, our alligator snapping turtle. Today, our zookeepers were able to capture a photo of this elusive fellow during cleaning. Bubbles spends most of his days at the bottom of the gator pond, lying in wait for his next meal to arrive. In the wild, alligator snapping turtles use the bright red spot on their tongue to lure in unsuspecting fish. He’s quite the handsome fellow!

🩹🩸💊Fun Fact Friday!💊🩸🩹

Did you know that alligators have natural antibiotics in their BLOOD? Their blood is resistant to many diseases and deadly infections, including HIV and West Nile Virus! In the wild, gators regularly fight with one another, and their bodies have evolved to survive infections that would kill other wounded animals in the same bacteria-riddled environments. This adaptation has allowed them to survive on earth longer than the dinosaurs!

Fun Fact Friday… er… Saturday!

Did you know that camels DON’T actually store water in their humps? Their humps serve instead as fat stores, and they store extra water in their blood! Both of these characteristics allow camels to survive the intense desert heat and scarcity of resources. Even though our beloved Zephra is built to handle the extreme heat, she wants you all to know she hates Wisconsin summers and would much rather have freezing temps 🥵🥵🥵

🪶🧡🪶 Fun Fact Friday! 🪶🧡🪶

Most birds undergo a process known as “molting,” where they lose their feathers and regrow new ones. When they regrow, they are called “pin feathers” and are covered in a protective layer of keratin that needs to be preened off to reveal the beautiful feather underneath. For most birds, this happens in the fall going into winter. However, for our Chinese pheasant, Trumpet, this process happens in the summertime! You can see the pin feathers predominantly around the back of his head and neck. It’s only a matter of time before he turns back into a beautiful bird!

What a beautiful partnership between animals! 🦘❤️🐐

We were able to make the best use of our goat cleanup crew in our kangaroo pen today! Our kangaroos tend to eat all the softer, greener grasses, which leaves behind thistles and other undesirable growth. It gets in their way, and inhibits their ability to reach the tender grasses below.

That’s where the goats come in handy! They love to chow down on all the weeds. Within a couple hours, the whole pen is trimmed down and the kangaroos return to their regular grazing. This in an example of a symbiotic relationship known as “mutualism,” where the kangaroos directly benefit from the weeds being cleaned up, and the goats benefit from the extra snacks. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that male emus sit on the eggs while the females protect the nest? 🐣 Because of this, the females are often far more aggressive than the males. The females are capable of creating an intimidating “drumming” sound to ward off predators.

Fun Fact Friday!

Most people know that the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse is called a “mule.” What most people DON’T know is that a cross between a FEMALE donkey and a MALE horse is called a “hinny!” Our mule Shorty‘s dad is our donkey Eddie, while his mother was our mini horse, Beauty, who unfortunately passed away several years ago. We are so lucky to have a piece of Beauty still with us, and Shorty definitely has his mother’s good looks and his dad’s charm 😎
