This sweet girl is Emmie. ❤️ She came in with her parents yesterday for her first kitten visit. Her favorite thing was snuggling with Dr. Humphreys. All of the girls loved getting to meet this sweet kid.

💚May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month!💚
(And yes, dogs can get it too!)
* The photo is from today and we pulled at least 10-15 ticks off one dog*

●Here's a couple facts you may or may not know :
》Ticks and Lyme disease is in nearly all 50 states
》Lone Star, Deer tick or the Black Legged tick is the most common carrier
》Ticks are most active in early Spring, Summer, and mild Winters (pending location of the region you are in)
》Ticks are mostly found in tall grass, shrubs,& wooded areas
》Once bit, it takes at least 24 hours for the bacteria to be transmitted from carrier to victim
》90 to 95% of pets won't show signs

●How do you decrease the risk of Lyme disease in your pet?
≈ Yearly Lyme vaccination
》Make sure your pet(s) are on vet recommended flea and tick prevention
》Keep your yard trimmed & tidy (more shrubs or tall grass = more ticks)
》Make it a habit for checking your pets for ticks

●What are the symptoms if your pet was to be infected?
》Fever, Swollen Joints (can be from one joint to the other), Lameness, Decrease of appetite and activity
》If not treated in time - Lyme disease can cause Kidney Disease later down the road

☆Diagnosing your pet through bloodwork is the only 100% way Veterinarians can treat infected pets.
If your pet needs treatment, it alone could cost over $500+. (Versus the $50/3months for Veterinarian recommended prevention)

We recently had a bat from Newton test positive for rabies and thought this would be a great time to discuss rabies and the importance of keeping your pets vaccinated.
Rabies is transmitted from the saliva of infected animals during a bite. Bats being the most common however, it can come from other animals.
All animals over the age of 12 weeks should be rabies vaccinated and is a state requirement for cats and dogs 6 months of age or older.
If you find a bat in your house, please contact us and we will direct you on what to do next.

Happy Veterinary Appreciation Day to our amazing crew at both Bondurant & Newton Animal Clinic!

Today is starting on a happy note! This is Lucky. Lucky was brought into us this morning by a community member saying he lived with her on her porch for a while. We managed to scan a microchip and was able to find his owner, who is also a client of ours. This shows the importance of microchipping our pets. If it wasn't for his chip, we wouldn't have been able to reunite him with his owner after 2 months apart. He is also neutered so that helped prevent many accidental pregnancies on his summer vacation. Shout out to this client for being a well prepared pet owner!

🐈Ear Mites In Cats🐈‍⬛ Today we had a young kitten come in for her first visit but she was not alone! Ear mites are common in young kittens but can also be found in adults. They are rarely seen in dogs. Some symptoms of ear mites in cats are shaking their head, scratching at ears, red/ inflamed ears, and black, dry discharge in the ears. If you are concerned about the debris in your pets ears, it can be hard to determine if they have an infection or if they have friends. The best way to find out is to schedule an appointment so we can look closer at their ears!
