FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions)
12/7, Day 118, STILL MISSING

Q: How can you believe your dog is still alive after all this time?

A: Our dog has shown, from an early age, a great aptitude for and commitment to hunting. She has caught a variety of meaty snacks over the years including meadow voles, rabbit and skunk (twice, without getting sprayed). She did not always eat them, but she was getting fed! Vermont has many natural springs that bubble up and run through the winter.

Q: Won't your dog die in the freezing temperatures?

A: Our dog develops a dense undercoat in the winter and has a tough layer of guard hairs in her top coat that keep moisture from penetrating. Even though we always provided an insulated dog house, our dog always preferred a home she had dug under the chicken house.

Q: If your dog is still out there, why aren't there any confirmed sightings?

A: Our dog is a breed of dogs more primitive than most house dogs and has been bred for thousands of years to have independent planning and thinking abilities. This is part of what makes them good guardians. They don't *need* people, though our dogs are deeply bonded to us and we to them.

But, because she is not accustomed to looking to humans to solve her problems, she is unlikely to be hanging out where humans are or seek interaction.

Q: What do you mean by "no confirmed sightings?"

A: There have been about a dozen sightings, scattered throughout Windham County, and throughout the time she has been missing, that could not be explained by a nearby farm's dogs, a neighborhood dog known to wander, or someone else's lost dog.

The Central Vermont Canine Recovery explained to us that they have seen, in guardian dogs in particular, a pattern in which the dog sets up "camp" somewhere remote, where there is water and good hunting, and spends time searching from that camp, making loops like a Spirograph, trying to catch the scent, magnetic vibration, anything that reminds them of the home they seek.

We feel this scatter of unconfirmed sightings fits this pattern.

Q: Why don't you share where those sightings are and where you think the "camp" might be?

A: If this theory is true, then our dog is safe. She has made a home that works for her from which she can do the work of finding us. And we believe she will. People out searching for her will drive her from her safe camp and could increase her risk of injury or death.

Q: Is your dog wearing a collar? Is your dog microchipped?

A: When our dog left the downed fence in the early morning hours of August 12, she was wearing an orange plastic buckle collar with green herbal insecticide pod holder, Westminster dog tag #238, VT/NH Veterinary rabies tags, and an orange permethrin fly tag hanging.

No chip 😕 She was never a wanderer and *very* skeptical with anyone she does not know. Not food motivated. We didn't think she needed a chip.

We do not know if that collar is still on her.

Q: What can we all do to help?

A: So many of you *are* helping! Sending pictures of dogs you see in various online sites--shelters, rescues, Front Porch Forum, Craig's List...all so helpful. We can't possibly monitor it all.

Texting 617-983-0096 when you see a big white dog anywhere there wasn't one before August 12. A picture is even better! Exact location, direction of travel, describing the dog with as much detail as possible...all incredibly helpful.

WE WILL FIND OUR DOG!!!

Ohhh boy does this girl win over everyone’s heart

Melly Belly! Melly was spayed yesterday and came back to her princess kennel here at Wagmore. The vet staff fell in love with her. Melly is up to date on all vaccinations including Lepto AND she’s been microchipped (although it’s doubtful she would stray from her persons side) Miss Melly will be recuperating for the next week and then be introduced to the pack. She will be available for adoption at that point. She is a treasure and will make an incredible family member!

About Wagmore

The social place for your best friend - overnight boarding, daycare and grooming near Stratton Mountain! Wagmore Kennels was opened in 2012 by Keth, a native Vermonter, whose goal was to create a fun, loving and active daycare and boarding facility for dogs in southern Vermont, which was lacking in the area at the time. Six years later and still the leading boarding and daycare facility in the Stratton/Manchester area, Keth handed his business off to us, Winhall locals and dog enthusiasts Sam Cassidy and Cassie Russo. We are honored to continue the Wagmore tradition of safe, fun and active dog play. When your dog stays with us, they’re family. Give us a call or stop in for a visit to see what sets Wagmore apart from the pack!
