In 1936, the Piper family established The Reptile Gardens as a roadside attraction along the newly built Tamiami Trail from Tampa to Miami. As the animal and botanical exhibits grew, the attraction’s name was changed to the Everglades Wonder Gardens to appeal to visitors. The Wonder Gardens captured the nostalgia, history, and wonder of old Florida, augmented with tropical flora and fauna from around the world. For nearly eighty-five years the Everglades Wonder Gardens has inspired, educated, and engaged our community and visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience. In April of 2013, the Pipers closed the Wonder Gardens, and local photographer and conservationist John Brady took over the property as a tenant and reopened the park. With the help of Ellie Krier, they started the formation of the non-profit 501(c)(3), Bonita Wonder Gardens. In July of 2015, the City of Bonita Springs recognized the economic, cultural, and historic value of this zoological and botanical attraction, and made a loan, enabling the nonprofit to purchase the 3-acre property and assets from the Piper family, saving it from potential commercial development. The property was later purchased by the City of Bonita Springs, while our charitable organization continues to manage all operations. Thus, began a new chapter of our public-private partnership to save this beloved attraction. THE PRESENT – YOUR WONDER GARDENS! Today, under the leadership of our President & CEO, Neil Anderson, and our board of directors, the Wonder Gardens is home to rescued and non-releasable birds and reptiles nestled among the sprawling banyan trees and plantings. While preserving the very best of The Wonder Gardens, the charitable organization cares for more than 200 resident animals, is upgrading wildlife enclosures, growing the botanical beauty of the property, adding education programs and events, and further engaging the community to enjoy this jewel in historic Downtown Bonita Springs. A historic icon, the Wonder Gardens stands as one of the few remaining cornerstones of Old Florida. Here, we tell a story of The Wonder Gardens’ past, present, and future, while educating our region about our environment and wildlife. Throughout its history, the Wonder Gardens has been supported by the community. Our partnerships with educational partners and businesses have allowed us to be contributing members of redeveloped and growing Bonita Springs. Visitors and Annual Memberships help us provide professional and high-quality care to our resident animals. Generous donor support allows us to improve and expand our exhibits. If SWFL area residents have not visited in some time, we hope they will enjoy the gardens along with our record 105,000 visitors!

Meet Pan🐍

Pan is our Burmese python, and he is currently housed behind the scenes. He is what is known as a labyrinth morph, meaning his colors and patterns are different from the typical Burmese python. The first photo was taken last week with our animal care team, and he is currently measuring at a whopping 10 feet long! The second photo shows him after he first arrived at Wonder Gardens in 2021 when he was only around 5 feet long!

As our busy season approaches, we wanted to take this time and remind our visitors to please not feed any animals or throw things inside of the habitats at Wonder Gardens, including both residents and wildlife. Even with the best intentions, outside food can cause major problems for our animals.

Every once in a while, we have guests bringing food or other items with them to try and feed it to our animals. Last week, we discovered dog milk bones inside the otter grotto. We assume that whoever did this thinks they're doing something nice for the otters, but this can cause a multitude of health issues for them.

Our animal collection is on monitored diets carefully designed by zoo staff for each species, and much work goes into balancing the diets of the animals, finding quality foods, and preparing the food to the animals’ liking. Foreign food items can cause a variety of health problems, including nausea, diarrhea and poisoning. Animals should not eat human food, especially processed foods. Even fruits and veggies that are healthy for people can be toxic to certain animals.

Wonder Gardens also prohibits guests from putting foreign objects into animal habitats. Zookeepers frequently find coins, plastic bottle caps, and even plants ripped from our own gardens in with the animals. These items can also be very harmful to the animals as well as destroy our beautiful botanic collection. A buildup of foreign material in an animal’s gut can make them constantly feel full, causing them to stop eating. Also, not every plant is safe for animals to eat.

We just please ask that you don't feed the animals at Wonder Gardens. They are fed appropriate foods in appropriate amounts, but if you are ever concerned about the health or wellbeing of one of our animals, ask a member of our staff to speak with one of our zookeepers. They love talking about them and telling you how amazing they are and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

We do offer an animal encounter program if you simply wish to feed an animal, just ask our Wonder Shoppe staff for more information!

Thank you for helping to keep our animals healthy and safe❣️

Wonder Gardens has been awarded $1.3 million through Florida’s State Funds Appropriation to build a new event center🎉

Secured with the support of State Rep. Adam Botana, the funding will allow Wonder Gardens to build the new event center to serve as a vital space for private events and educational programs, including classes, summer camps and field trips. In addition to Wonder Gardens programming, the space will also be available for the community to rent for private events such as parties, weddings and other gatherings.

The event center will provide a safe, indoor space for year-round events and educational activities, regardless of weather conditions. It will include an onsite kitchen area, additional public restrooms for guests, an entry point to an adjacent aviary and an outdoor deck overlooking the Imperial River and Riverside Park.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from the State of Florida and Rep. Adam Botana, which will allow us to rebuild a vital part of the Wonder Gardens,” said Neil Anderson, president and CEO of Wonder Gardens. “For nearly three years, we’ve been without a place to host educational programs and community events. Many of our educational programs and camps are held during the summer months, when Florida’s rainy season often makes an indoor space essential. This new event center will not only restore these opportunities, but it will also create a welcoming space for the entire community.”

Our Story

Admission is $12.00 for adults 13-64, $10.00 for seniors 65 and older, and $7.00 for children 3-12. Open Monday-Sunday from 10 am - 4 pm, except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. This cultural icon has been a focal point of Bonita Springs first started as a facility to rehabilitate injured animals. The gardens remained with the original owners for over 78 years and has been non profit since 2015. It has become a place for visitors to enjoy the botanical gardens and see wildlife in an intimate way, something that modern parks cannot provide. The modern Everglades Wonder Gardens focuses on interactive and immersive experiences, some of our wildlife includes beautiful birds, large alligators, reptiles (including a 16 ft python), a flamboyance of flamingos. A mature botanical garden, which has some of the most exotic specimens from around the planet. The Gardens appeal to the many visitors who frequent Southwest Florida from all over the world, as well as the local community and its residents.
