Senior horse πŸ’•
Acupuncture is a gentle yet powerful modality that can help your aging equine feel more energized and comfortable in their bodies.

This sweet mare came to be for a holistic consult to address some chronic health issues and fine tune her nutrition. We incorporated acupuncture combat her fatigue and stiffness. After one treatment she started calling to her mom, trotting over, and double barrel bucking at her pasture mates again. Something she has not done in quite some time.

I love treating our equine senior citizens. Reach out if your old pal could use some TLC!

Let’s talk about electroacupuncture ⚑️

This involved attaching a wires connected to an electric current between two acupuncture points.
This allows us to stimulate large muscle groups or nerve lines, without having to needle every single point. It has also been researched and proven to produce a stronger, longer lasting effect, as well as, release more endorphins and serotonin.

Point spotlight: BL-23
This is bladder meridian back shu point that is associated with the kidney. All of the back shu points on the horse are located about a handprint away from the spine. This one is between the 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebrae which is where the innervation to the kidneys comes off of.
In Chinese medicine, the kidney is associated with bone and spine so this is a commonly used point to support horses with arthritis, spinal pain, as well as kidney issues.

Point highlight: Liver 3
This point is extremely good for moving stagnation or pain and helping hind end weakness.
🫢🏽
It is a very strong point and while commonly used it is not tolerated by all horses. Often time it is a point that you needle and the horse may shake out before removing due to its intensity but it still gets stimulated and has powerful effects on the body. One of my mentors at the Chi Institute said every performance horse needs liver-3. I have to agree.

To feel liver 3 on yourself, put pressure between your 1st and 2nd metatarsal on top of your foot! ➑️ to see a photo of location in humans

The Shen series (Shen Peng, Shen Shu, and Shen Jiao) are the equine classical points used to tonify Kidney and for coxofemoral weakness and pain.

The kidney meridian is responsible for bone (arthritis and spine) support and is the source of Qi in Chinese medicine.

Couldn’t we all use a little support in our Shen series?

Baby’s first acupuncture. My little filly is having a strong reaction to some of her core vaccines and didn’t want to move or turn her head today. She was such a brave girl for her acupuncture session and licked some Chinese herbs out of my hand. Feel better soon Sandy! πŸ’œ

While some horses take immediately to acupuncture, others can be reactive and anxious when trying something new. The first treatment I did on Pippa took quite a dance to get just 5 needles in. Still she got a lot of benefits from her treatment that her mom and fellow caretakers appreciated a notable difference in her movement and mood. Today was her third treatment and every time she gets more accepting of the needles. She even let me run some electroacupuncture and was taking deep breaths the whole time. It’s beautiful thing when animals realize you are helping them and begin to trust you πŸ’—

πŸ’—treating our equine seniors! Horses acquire aches and pains as they age just like us and especially those who were premier athletes in their hay day. This sweet fellow has been moving so much better and is full of energy since we started his weekly acupuncture treatments.
