Creature Comforts owner Paula Brown grew up surrounded by animals. She began house and farm sitting in 1984, and is comfortable and experienced with both small animals (cats, dogs, birds and reptiles) and farm animals (horses, cows, goats, alpacas, llamas and chickens). Creature Comforts offers comprehensive service. Paula will either stop by to care for animals several times daily, or stay overni

ght in the home. (Most owners prefer the latter, knowing that their pets are more comfortable in familiar surroundings.) Creature Comforts offers reliable service, reasonable rates, and references. Although Paula's primary service area is the greater Boothbay Region, she is open to jobs further afield. Creature Comforts has an affordable base rate for house pets and another for farm animals. Prices may vary slightly depending on the total number of animals requiring care, as well as special needs. Please feel free to contact Paula for an estimate. Also, an introductory visit to meet you and your pets is free, with no obligation!

What a wonderful shout out from Boothbay Animal Hospital for National Pet Sitters Week. As a long time pet sitter (and lifelong pet owner), I'm so grateful to have them as a resource, and count the staff as friends.

Leaving your pet behind can be ruff! ๐Ÿพ Thatโ€™s why we want to give a big shout out to the paw-some pet sitters who give our best friends the love and care they deserve while weโ€™re away.

"The number of injuries caused by dog walking more than quadrupled during the study period, with about 7,200 in 2001 and about 32,000 in 2020, according to the study."

ER visits because of fractures, sprains, head and other injuries from walking a leashed dog increased in the past two decades, a study shows.

This is a very informative article. And it validates what cat lovers have known for a long time. ๐Ÿ˜ป๐Ÿ˜ป

"The findings showed that โ€œcats are paying close attention to their caretakers, down to not only what they are saying, but how they are saying it,โ€ said Kristyn Vitale, an assistant professor of animal health and behavior at Unity College in Maine who was not involved in the new study.

The new study complements Dr. Vitaleโ€™s own research into relationships between a cat and its owner. This relationship is so important, Dr. Vitaleโ€™s research has found, that it replicates the connection between a kitten and its mother. โ€œIt is possible that attachment behaviors originally intended for interactions with their mother have now been modified for interactions with their new caretakers, humans.โ€

Unlike dogs, โ€œmost cats actually prefer human interaction over other rewards like food or toys,โ€ Dr. Vitale said."

Cats have a reputation for being aloof, but a new study has found that their relationships with their owners may be stronger than we thought.

"While it only took a matter of hours for the enzyme to digest Oscarโ€™s herniated disc, it took a bit longer for the spinal cord to recover enough for him to walk again. But only 20 days after the procedure, about the same amount of time it would have taken after surgery, Oscar passed the standard of being able to walk a 50-step distance (about 40 feet for him) without support.

Three months after his procedure, Oscar completely regained his ability to walk and was starting to run again."

Oscar When Oscar, a 5-year-old Dachshund, developed partial paralysis from a herniated disc, he became the first dog to experience a new, non-surgical

"But among other lifestyle factors โ€” breed, sterilization, gender, physical activity, among others โ€” only physical activity showed an effect. Dogs that, by their ownersโ€™ estimation, were inactive, were nearly 6.5 times more likely to have dementia than highly active dogs of the same age.

The results strongly suggest that โ€œtaking your dog for a walkโ€ or playing Frisbee or fetch or, in any other way, keeping Rover moving, โ€œis likely to be beneficialโ€ for its brain, Kaeberlein said."

Regular walks can help protect dogs and humans from dementia, new research shows.

"An Oregon State University study found that dogs whose owners have high expectations and responsiveness to their dog's behavior are more likely to be social, have a higher rate of secure attachment and complete problem-solving tasks with more persistence and success. Meanwhile, pooches with more authoritarian or permissive parents are more likely to be insecurely attached to their owners and less likely to persist at solvable tasks."

You might think dogsโ€™ personalities are determined by nature, but a new study shows that how humans โ€œparentโ€ pets makes a difference.

"Studies suggest that most domestic cats older than four end up developing some sort of gum affliction; several experts told me that the rates of periodontal disease in household felines can exceed 80 percent. Left untreated, these ailments can cost a cat one or more teeth, or even spread its effects throughout the body, potentially compromising organs such as the kidneys, liver, and heart."

No one seems to think brushing kitty's teeth is worth the hassle.
