As you prepare for Thanksgiving, we wanted to remind you of some common pet dangers.
Raw dough: Yeast in raw dough creates carbon dioxide and alcohol through the fermentation process, accelerated by the warm environment of the stomach. This can lead to alcohol poisoning, and dangerous bloating. Do not wait, seek veterinary care immediately!
Grapes and raisins: There is no known toxic dose and while some dogs may never have a problem, others may suffer from acute kidney failure. Prompt treatment is safest!
Turkey and Ham: Salt and fat content may lead to gastritis, pancreatitis and kidney dysfunction. While bland skinless turkey may be safe in small amounts, seasoned or brined turkey may pose a problem.
Garlic and onions: May cause GI upset and anemia leading to weakness, lethargy, labored breathing and collapse. Symptoms may not appear for 1-5 days after ingestion. Cats are more susceptible than dogs, but dogs may be affected if large amounts are ingested.
Bones: Cooked bones in particular can splinter, increasing risk for GI irritation and perforation, while heavier bones can cause tooth fractures.
Chocolate: Theobromine in chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and urination, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and even death. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous! Additionally, artificial sweeteners like xylitol in sugar free products can result in hypoglycemia and liver failure.
Alcohol: Similar to yeast dough ingestion, alcohol can lead to GI signs, decreased coordination, CNS depression, difficulty breathing, coma, even death. Watch those alcohol filled confections!
Macadamia nuts: Can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and an elevated temperature.
If your pet ingests any of these items, please seek veterinary care! While we hope you don’t need us, we are here 24/7 to help.
We wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
