So saddened to learn about the loss of Dr Frans de Waal announced in the Dutch outlet NRC. If you’re a geek about animal behavior and animal ethics you’ll understand how devastating the news feels. He‘s one of those academics you want to learn directly from and the closest I got was devouring his books and papers on animal social behaviors. Among many accomplishments over his cover he studied and proved primates (and other animals) like us value relationships experiencing empathy, cooperation and reciprocity. Thank you for dedicating your life to helping us all understand our animal friends just a little more. RIP

If you have recently lost a companion animal take time to grieve their loss the same way you would any other family member. For some, like me it takes longer to adjust to their absence perhaps because of strong somatic memories I still hold…. Just writing this note and looking at Jimmy and Stella pictured here brings tears to my eyes. They were my babies….certainly not biological babies but undoubtedly they were my family. Over time we developed a shared mutual respect, trust and authentic love for each other. They were my teachers on my journey to growing compassion while understanding dogs. Today while I may still shed tears I am truly okay with their loss. Sad and grateful at the same time for all of the memories we shared. As much as you can, be present and experience the love of your four legged family members.

Pet Loss As pet guardians, one of the most challenging experiences to live through is the loss and grief of our beloved companions. Death is a part of the natural life cycle of all living beings. Yet, when we acquire a pet, we intentionally, or not, sweep the notion of pet loss right under the rug f...

Is that me? Ever wonder if your pet identifies themselves in a reflection? The “mirror test” was designed by scientists and is still used however falls short as it considers their own (human) sensory perception and not those of the subject being studied. We know all species have evolved sensory perceptions to adapt to their environments. Some, like cats and dogs see better at dawn/night, some are red green color blind (dogs) cats can also see shades green and purple. Think of that when you buy your next pet you! Both rely on olfaction (smell) and audition (hearing) which are their real super powers. Modern animal scientists apply current ever changing scientific findings making an effort to design studies based on what we know about the animals Umwelt (deWaal). For some animals including feline, canine, ungulates (hooved animals), and rodents for example olfaction rather than vision as a means of identifying oneself. Chemical exchanges through Olfaction reigns first and foremost and ought to be considered in study designs for particular species.
