Our Story
People had been meeting with their dogs in the vacated Junior Basket Ball Court on the Southwestern Corridor for some years. It was a great space with 4000 square feet of partially fenced in space having a painted cement floor. People met there for their pets to be off leash, although not legal on the Corridor, to socialize, exercise and mingle.
I moved to the South End in May of 2003 with my two pooches and looking for a fenced in area to play. I found the old Court on Carleton Street being used unofficially for pooch play. In July of 2003, the idea was broached with a few local volunteers on the Corridor, to create a safe, legal space for canine interaction. This group, initially of three woman wanted to see gates on the space, a new surface and a water fountain to complete Phase I. I, having the most pooch experience owning POOCH PALACE in Watertown since 1994 and canine home boarding since 1984 prepared a written, pictorial and oral presentation for the PMAC Oversight Committee. While attending their monthly meetings, along with my answering dozens of questions concerning canine behavior and sanitation concerns, we were instructed to start an outreach program. We were finally authorized to move forward with PMAC approval, then proceeded to seek neighboring Association approvals as well. We received positive feedback from each group except one.
PMAC produced a letter of support that was forwarded to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts/Department of Conservation & Recreation, we were on our way. After numerous meetings, negotiating and dialogue with DCR, an agreement was finally reached clearly defining the responsibilities for the Friends of Carleton Court. I legally signed the DCR documentation taking responsibility for Carleton Court. I continue in that capacity.
With much excitement and anticipation, I donated $3,500 in funds for the single (handicap) and double gates and mid rail bars, to keep little dogs in and babies from falling in, which were installed the beginning of July.
