Boston Veterinary Care is a veterinary clinic with a purpose - all profits support the Animal Rescue League of Boston. We are honored to be able to provide quality veterinary care to our clients and their pets. In addition to providing routine wellness examinations, vaccinations, dental care and preventive medicine, we are pleased to be able to provide more advanced diagnostics such as radiographs

(‘x-rays’), EKG and a variety of laboratory tests. Under the supervision of Dr. Edward Schettino, Vice President of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Services, our veterinarians and compassionate technicians provide care to private clients by appointment. Boston Veterinary Care is open to the public and offers convenient weekday and Saturday hours. FREE parking is available. Se habla español.

By spaying or neutering your pet, you save the cost of caring for future litters and reduce the likelihood of your pet needing veterinary treatment for injuries occurring when roaming or fighting or complications arising from giving birth.

There are a number of complications that may arise from being intact and breeding; for example, pyometra (infection in the uterus) and reproductive cancers. These risks are eliminated when the animal is spayed or neutered. Neutering male dogs and cats also prevents testicular cancer, and can reduce the incidence of diseases related to the prostate.

Females no longer have a heat cycle; this eliminates the attraction and approach of unwanted attention by male dogs/cats. Eliminating the female heat cycle can also be beneficial to owners, as managing female dogs and cats in heat in a home can be difficult. Neutering male dogs and cats also prevents unwanted behaviors, such as spraying/marking and hu***ng.

Without spay and neuter initiatives, homeless animals are often euthanized, neglected or die of disease. Sterilization is critical for management of community dogs and cats and related disease control concerns. Some diseases of concern include zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are diseases that are transmissible from animal to humans, such as rabies.

February is Spay & Neuter Awareness Month?

A spay is the surgical removal of a female’s reproductive organs so that she can no longer become pregnant. A neuter is the surgical removal of a male animal’s testicles so that he cannot impregnate a female.The surgeries are performed by a veterinarian while animals are under general anesthesia so that they do not feel pain. When someone says an animal is “fixed” or “altered” that means the animal has been spayed or neutered.

The simplest way to reduce nuisance and aggressive behaviors, improve long-term health and longevity, is to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered.

As comes to an end, Mister Otto Van Wagner (who recently celebrated his 17th birthday!!!) wanted to remind you of the importance of consistent vet visits for pets 8-10 years and older! Since pets age faster than we do as humans, we recommend bringing your senior pets to the vet every 6-12 months. Annual bloodwork and urinalysis will screen for signs of systemic diseases, endocrine problems, and blood dyscrasia, among many other conditions that can be managed if caught early. And as always, we recommend yearly f***l testing, heartworm testing (for dogs), and year-round heartworm prevention for all ages. The term “senior” in relation to animals varies depending on breed and species, so next time you’re in for a visit feel free to check in with us about any questions you may have about your older furry friends!
