Happy Women’s History Month! We would like to honor, Dr. Margaret Phyllis Lose, the first female equine veterinarian in the United States. Lose, born on November 15, 1925, had always admired horses from a young age. She was the third woman to get a horse trainer license in the United States. Lose opened many equine hospitals and was very successful in her surgeries- treated up to 1,000 horses a week during the busiest years. In 1957, Lose graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and was one of three women who studied large animals in her graduating class. She opened two equine hospitals in Pennsylvania. In 1999, she relocated to Florida and took her veterinary boards again working as a racetrack vet. Let’s continue to honor, empower, and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women, not just this month, but every day. #womenshistorymonth #southbayveterinarygroup #womenleaders
For this year’s Black history month, the South Bay Vet family would like to celebrate the first black woman veterinarian, Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb. Webb was born on February 21, 1923 in Mobile, Alabama. In 1943, Webb received a bachelors degree from Tuskegee Institute and in 1949 received her Doctor Veterinary Medicine. Then in 1950, after she took her faculty study leave from Tuskegee, she earned a master’s degree (M.S. in anatomy) from Michigan State University. Webb was one of the first black women to graduate from veterinary school in the United States. #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #southbayveterinarygroup
