This is a great skill to work on with any dog that barks, lunges, or get overly excited when they see other dogs, people, or new things. Note this is just stage one of multiple-stage process, so stayed for the stages to come!

‼️ This video shows Gideon's first time searching for food in boxes. While Aubrey is a Certified Nose Work Instructor through the National Association of Canine Scent Work and Gideon will at some point compete in this super fun sport, nosework is a great way to have fun at home with your dog while simultaneously engaging them in a mentally enriching activity. As you'll notice, Aubrey in this video has him searching for his primary reinforcer (FOOD!). Maybe watching will inspire you to try the same with your pup!

🤔 Gideon is young! So far he has three markers. These are cues that tell him how he will receive his reinforcement - his good stuff! Can you hear all of them? That chirpy "yes" means he should take food from Aubrey's hand. The "find it" means she is going to toss food on the floor. "Tug" means to bite the toy in Aubrey's hand and then play with it.

These recall runs play a pivotal function in flyball, so this is one of the first skills Gideon needs to learn.

✅ What signal or word is she using to cue or ask her dog to go to the platform?
✅ What does it seem like she is rewarding?
💡 Pro Tip: The timing of your reward is key to teaching your dog what you like about their behavior. Rewarding your pup too early or too late might reinforce behaviors you didn’t intend—like walking away instead of holding still. Use treats, praise, or a toy to reinforce exactly what you want, like sitting calmly or looking at the camera.
