🌟 Service Dog Spotlight: Meet Skipper! 🌟
We’re so happy to introduce you to Skipper, who recently graduated his training as a PTSD Service Dog and paired with his handler, Roger. Happy Graduation, Skipper! Since June is PTSD Awareness Month, we thought it would be interesting to share what a dog like Skipper is trained to do:

🐶 Shake: This is used to help the handler interact with the public. The service dog will "shake" hands with an individual of the handler's choosing versus having someone pet and distract the dog.

🐶 Nightmare Interruption: A service dog is trained to nudge its handler awake when the handler is having a nightmare. The dogs look for signs of a nightmare to perform this task.

🐶 Positional cues: These are used to create space between the handler and others in a crowded/public space. The positional cues are "center," "turn," and "behind."

🐶 Rest: This task is used as a form of grounding. When a veteran or first responder becomes anxious, they ask for "rest" and their service dog will lay its head on its handler's lap.

🐶 Retrieve: Service dogs can be trained to pick up miscellaneous objects off their floor. The goal is to have them pick up anything (within reason) for their handler. Usually, items are phones, books, wallets, credit cards, keys, etc.

🐶 Push: Used in two ways. One is to push the handicap button for doors for easier access. The other way is in case of an emergency. If the handler is distressed, the service dog can push a "help" button.

His handler Roger says, "Prior to being partnered with Skipper, I typically spent most of my time isolated at home. With Skipper I find that I am more comfortable in settings such as stores and the gym.”

Skipper was DNA tested through our partnership with Assistance Dogs International (). As an accredited member, organizations like , a nonprofit organization that provides veterans and first responders with service dogs at no cost, can receive discounted Embark Dog DNA Tests.

🌟Service Dog Spotlight: Meet Fiona! 🌟

Today is really special, because we get to share Fiona’s story with all of you. Fiona is a VERY good girl who is part of Hero Dogs, an organization that places assistance dogs with veterans and first-responders with disabilities, as well as with community organizations.

Fiona excelled in Hero Dog’s Advanced Training program. And in October 2022, she was paired with Bethany, an army vet who lives with a service-related disability. Their bond is undeniable. Bethany says, "I am a stronger and healthier person with Fiona in my life. She is the glue that holds the broken pieces in place, and helps me see the beauty in my recovery."

Fiona was DNA tested through our partnership with Assistance Dogs International. As an accredited member, organizations like Hero Dogs can receive discounted Embark Dog DNA Tests.

😍 Results are in for Polly Pocket! She is a Staffordshire Terrier and Bulldog mix who needs a forever home based in the Los Angeles/Southern California area.
🐶 She came into the Lancaster shelter as a stray, with no chip or collar and no one ever came for her. She was getting overlooked and started to get sick which put her on the euthanasia list.
🛏️ Polly is now completely potty trained, leash trained, crate trained (though she prefers to sleep with her humans in bed) and knows her basic commands.
