Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

Certainly not an easy part of the job, but we can only hope to bring both the horse and the owner some much needed peace during these difficult decisions.

When is the “right” time to euthanize your horse? While this is not a subject horse people like to think about, it's something we all inevitably have to deal with at some point. Below is some food for thought courtesy of the horse doctors at Back Cove Equine Veterinary Care:

“At times it is obvious, such as an acute onset of severe colic or injury. Other times it is more subtle: having more trouble getting up and down to roll, not taking pleasure in the things they used to, having more bad days than good, etc. When the time comes, equine veterinarians are often called upon to help navigate this greatest of decisions and help counsel owners.”

Pictured is Prince, a senior horse who recently made his way to the next world after his owner gave great thought to the winter ahead and made the very difficult and loving decision to let him go with his dignity. Prince passed on a beautiful, crisp morning, surrounded by people who loved him.

If you own horses long enough, sooner or later you are likely to be confronted with a medical emergency—even during the holidays. Are you prepared to act?

Having a clear emergency action plan will help you stay focused and effective if a crisis strikes. Below are some basic guidelines that can help you prepare for an equine emergency:

1. Know how to reach your regular veterinarian after hours. Ask about a back-up or referring veterinarian in case your regular horse doctor is not available for emergencies.

2. Have a plan for transporting the horse is necessary and know in advance the most direct route to an equine surgery center.

3. Prepare a first aid kit and store it in a clean, dry, readily accessible place. Keep a first aid kit in your horse trailer or towing vehicle as well, and be sure to check your supplies periodically and restock as needed. First-aid kits can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like; seek your horse doctor's advice on what to add, especially regarding any drugs that could be included and how they should be administered.

Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your local veterinarian remains your best source of information!

Let’s find this sweet girl a home/foster/rescue! DM me for more details. Long story short we found her roaming in Pembroke on Friday and she’s so sweet, but was afraid of the AC officer. We’ve had her at the clinic since then and she’s been an angel!
