“Make friends who force you to level up”

Today we teamed up with Amber Crandall of MT Pocket Ranch and we put on a clinic together!

The morning started with horsemanship, then onto drills and pattern work in the afternoon - we helped each horse and rider team as much as we could! We had a great group, and we look forward to doing another one 🥰 thanks to everyone who came!

It’s been a while since we had a barn party! We had a lot of fun with some competitive trail patterns, barrel racing, and of course egg & spoon! Finished the night off with a yummy potluck. Thankful for a fun crew everyday!

This was a going away party for Kaydee and her gelding Squeaks, she’s headed to Baudette for the summer and then off to SD. We wish her nothing but the best - she will be missed by everyone! 🥰

Here’s to the owners who are outside every couple of hours to monitor their horses’ health in these frigid temps.

Here’s to the owners who are checking waterers for ice. Here’s to the owners who are freezing their fingers to hang up their hose, or bringing hoses inside their house to keep from freezing.

Here’s to the owners switching blankets, double blanketing, or cleaning out shelters for their unblanketed horses. Here’s to the owners who are worried if their horse is staying warm enough with or without their blanket.

Here’s to the owners who are throwing countless flakes of loose hay out while making sure the round bale feeders don’t go empty.

Here’s to the owners praying that equipment starts, and hydraulics work smoothly. Here’s to the owners who figure it out when the equipment fails you.

Here’s to the messy mud room, filled with winter bibs, charged heated vests, boot dryers plugged in, and headlamps charged. Here’s to the countless pairs of gloves you have to swap out each time you venture outside.

Here’s to the rigorous training schedules, riding lessons, and busy barn coming to a halt. Here’s to putting the health of the animal’s first.

Here’s to the part of horse management that isn’t so glamorous. Thank you for all you are doing for the safety and wellbeing of your horses during this time.

Here’s to all of us ❄️🩵

For the month of December we offered a Riding Challenge in our barn to keep everyone motivated to stay in the saddle through winter. Of course there was a prize to the winner - but with a race this close, we ended up giving away two prizes 😁

Mya & Hootie - 17 hours!
Emery & Gunsmoke - 16 hours & 49 minutes!

That’s a CLOSE race! Proud of their dedication to their horses and riding, great work girls!

Thanks for another great year 😘 it may have been the best one yet! Wishing you all a Happy Holiday season! 🥰

Our 2024 sponsored riders - part 2 🔥🔥🔥

It was tough to choose between all the applicants - but we are so excited to introduce Ruby Roberts and Hayley Sondgeroth to our team for 2024!

Ruby has been with us for a couple years now and we are so proud to see how she has grown with her mare, Cardi! Ruby takes occasional lessons with Alex and always jumps at the opportunity to learn! We are looking forward to helping this team excel in 2024

Hayley is new to us, but we love her already! Hayley has always stood out with her kindness and willing to lend a helping hand. Hayley and her mare Classy have accomplished so much together, and we are looking forward to supporting them in their 2024 season!

Congrats to all - and as always, thank you everyone for the interest! If you were not chosen, we really encourage you to reapply again next year!

I'll be in the barn
By Vivian (Kahl) Jones

“When people have come to visit over the years they commonly hear from me I'll be in the barn.

When life gets hard I'll be in the barn.
When things are just right I'll be in the barn.

When the sun shines
The rain falls
Or snow covers the ground
I'll be in the barn.

If things seem to be falling apart or if I'm celebrating the simple things, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for answers or trying to clear my mind, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for myself, I'll be in the barn.

If I'm working or trying to relax, I'll be in the barn.

Even when I'm not in the barn my mind drifts there, I find myself thinking about being in the barn.....

soaking feed for the next day,
mucking or spreading manure,
how to fix a problem I've been having with a horse,
tack that needs cleaned or changed or mended,
wounds that need doctored,
if I need to put on blankets or fly masks.

It's where I keep my riches
All my wins and my failures
Everyone of my hopes
Dreams
Hardships
And memories

You can find them all in the barn, buried in the hay, hiding under a saddle, spilling out of the feed bins, or glimmering with dust in the evening light.

I may be covered in dust, dirt, a mash feed, hair, and hay, smell of sweat and manure, and sometimes there may be blood or tears but I'll be there. I'll be in the barn.

So if your wondering where to find me, I'll be in the barn. If I'm not there I promise I'm on my way.”

OPEN RIDING‼️

Tis the season of open riding inquires!

Our arena is available for open riding. You MUST message or text me ahead of time - you MUST sign a liability waiver and you MUST pay the facility fee of $20

Our obstacle course is also available for use! $20 to come give it a try 🙂 again, liability waivers must be signed.

Stalls are for boarders only. Please tack up at your trailer. Please clean up after your horse (including in the driveway!)

We are offering a monthly rate for unlimited open riding this year. Please PM/text for inquires

Keep in mind our arena is shared by many - certain days and times of day are busier than others. Please be mindful and respectful of everyone’s space. Current boarder’s needs’ will always come first 🙂

Thank you!

This summer we were lucky enough to lease a gelding named Cajun for our lesson program. He quickly became a favorite for most of our students and a barn favorite for a lot of our boarders 🥰 here is what his owner had to say about our lease!

“For the last six months, Cajun got to be a lesson horse at JA Horse Company near Grand Rapids. This was not an easy decision for my family to make for a whole summer, but one of those "adult" decisions that needed to be made, temporarily. I'd just like to put in a plug for JA Horse Company owner, Alex Beach and her staff...

Each time we visited Cajun at the farm, I was blown away with the apparent attention to detail and the immaculate care of each horse on the property. No stone went unturned when it came to efforts put in to uphold the horse first. We received periodic pictures and updates and could tell that the community built there was positive and considerate. Communication was clear and prompt. I felt like I really had eyes on my boy, even with me being so far away.

Grand Rapids horse people : you are so lucky to have an equestrian center set up at your fingertips like this. Take it from someone that lives in the heart of the metro and has toured multiple elite facilities. You'd be hard-pressed to find a facility open to public boarding that holds a candle to this. Thanks to JA Horse Company for taking care of my boy! We are excited to have him home.”

Thanks for sharing Cajun with us Maija! This big, goofy gelding will be missed! ❤️❤️❤️

As the season comes closer to an end, we absolutely wanted to give some recognition to our sponsored riders this year. These girls are the definition of what we are looking for in a sponsored rider! They are kind, helpful, hardworking, and DEDICATED! They both put their horses’ needs first, and their hard work showed up this season!

Abby & Runner… ❤️‍🔥 Abby has put in the hard work getting quicker with her mare, and the progress was FAST. We are so proud of these two! It’s been incredible to be a part of Abby’s growth, from her first lesson to her first wins! It’s always a fun time with Abby & Runs 😁❤️

Mya & Zeva… ❤️‍🔥 Mya has been leasing Zeva for two years now, and they are HEADED BACK TO 4-H STATE! 🍀 so, so proud of them!! Mya’s dedication has paid off big time for her this year, with her fastest runs on this little buckskin mare. We are super excited to see what’s in store for their future 😁❤️

Love these kids! It’s been such a fun summer with our ENTIRE JA Horse Co family! Good luck at state, Mya!

19 stalls filled from our barn! Our stall theme was jungle this year and we took home the stall decorating win for the third year in a row! 🥳 so proud of our group, it was so fun! We will celebrate with a pizza party and playday at our barn!

I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it - we have the BEST barn family! The photos alone show we love a good time! Everyone did great in their classes and some dreams came true 🥰

Square bale season deserves some recognition this year! ❤️❤️❤️

We got a last minute call saying our square bales were being baled and on the field. I happened to be in Verndale for Sharp Truck Challenge with one of our big trucks 😔 These AMAZING humans stepped up on a moments notice to lend a helping hand! Even bringing another truck and trailer! The biggest thank you to all of you!

I came home to a beautiful sight! 470+ squares neatly stacked in the barn! 😍 not only that - but it is the most beautiful alfalfa too! Lucky horses here at JA Horse Co! 🐴🐴🐴

Gooooood morning from JA Horse Co! 😁☀️ Hope everyone has a wonderful, horse-filled weekend! 🥰

That’s a wrap for 2023 horse camps! What a great group of kids - we even got to go on a trail ride! Our first year of camps was a big success 🥳 thank you to our helpers, Mya and Taylor, and thank you to some of our amazing boarders for letting us borrow some steady horses for the day 🥰

“Farm work doesn’t make you stronger. It doesn’t make you anything.

It reveals you.

There’s gym strong and then there’s farm strong.
They are not mutually exclusive.

The toughest women you’ll ever meet spend their days on a farm.

There are more uses for twine than you can possibly imagine.

“Well that certainly didn’t go as planned,” is one thing you’ll say quite a bit.

Control is a mere illusion... The thought that you have any, at any given time, is utterly false.

Sometimes sleep is a luxury...So are lunch and dinner. And brushing your hair. Trust me, you’ll find muscles that you never knew existed on the human skeleton to prevent this from happening.

When one of the animals is ill, you’ll go to heroic lengths to minimize their discomfort.

Their needs come first.

In the summer heat and the coldest winter days. Clean water, clean bed, and plenty of feed. Before you have your first meal, they all eat.

When you lose one of them, even though you know that day is inevitable, you still feel sadness, angst and emotional pain from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. And it’s a heaviness that lingers even though you must regroup and press on.

You’ll cry a lot. But you’ll never live more fully.

You’ll remain present no matter what because you must. There is no other option.
You’ll ask for so many miracles and hold out hope until the very last.

You’ll find yourself saying things like, “we have maybe twenty minutes of daylight left to git ‘er done” whilst gazing up at a nonspecific place in the sky.

You’ll become weirdly obsessive about the weather.

You’ll go out in public wearing filthy clothes and smelling of dirt, sweat and p**p.

People will look at you sideways and crinkle their noses but you won’t care.

Your entire day can derail within ten seconds of the rising sun.

You can wash your coveralls. They won’t look any cleaner, but they will smell much nicer.

Farm work is difficult in its simplicity.

You’ll always notice just how beautiful sunrises and sunsets really are.

Should you ever have the opportunity to work on a farm, take the chance!

You will never do anything more satisfying in your entire life.”
