THIS!!
It’s admittedly difficult sometimes to set our human feelings aside however, it is something we often have to do for the wellbeing of our horses. If horses are given the proper amount of resources; food, water, space, and shelter the likelihood of any serious issues is very slim. Trust in the natural dynamics of the herd!

The Benefits of Group Housing for Horses

While many horse owners hesitate to keep horses together due to injury risks or feeding challenges, group housing provides essential socialization and companionship. As highly social herd animals, horses thrive when able to interact with equine companions. The many advantages make group turnout worth thoughtful planning and management.

Choose Suitable Companions

Not all horses automatically bond. Allow new pairs ample “over-the-fence” acquaintance before full turnout, watching for mounting tension. Ensure ample room for retreating during initial meetings, removing any items that could catch or enable grabbing. Give the relationship time to develop through mutual grooming and grazing side-by-side, providing multiple resources like shelters and hay stations to prevent resource guarding.

Mitigate Injury Concerns

The primary fear around group turnout stems from injury potential. Careful space management greatly reduces harm risks—ensure sufficient room for horses to escape pressure, clear group areas of entanglement hazards, and remove rugs initially. Understand that squealing and opposition help horses communicate boundaries, though relentless bullying requires separation. Trust horses’ innate ability to read body language signals for advancing or retreating.

Strategise Feed Allocations

When pairing horses with very different nutritional needs, separate hay stations far apart or feed the food-dominant horse first to avoid feed time friction. Temporary enclosures can isolate one horse during meals. Most pairs quickly learn designated feed places. Remember – only 30 minutes each day centre around feed time.

Ease Separation Anxiety

Some horses initially fret when pasture-mates leave the field. However, anxiety about isolation usually diminishes amongst stable social groups of three or more horses. Ensure your horse also feels secure with you through consistent training that establishes clear communication and predictability around human handling. Bond by spending quality grooming time together. And if group turnout isn't possible, even visual contact with other horses can provide comfort.

The benefits of companionship demonstrably enhance horses’ general well-being and temperament and studies show that the security of a trusted companion translates into horses that are more relaxed and confident when interacting with humans and novel objects.
