Merkel Farm Equestrian Center is located in Bowie (MD) is looking for an experienced barn worker ( full time job, 6 days a week). Onsite housing is available( beautiful fully furnished basement with one bedroom, one living room, kitchen, bathroom, gas stove, microwave, full refrigerator/freezer and full size washer and dryer). Could accommodate a single adult or couple. This could be the perfect set up for someone with farm/horse care experience who has a remote job. Merkel is located 30 minutes outside of DC/Baltimore and 20 minutes from Annapolis.
Shift Duties included: feeding, turn out, watering/haying, blanketing, stall cleaning, horse care and other duties around the farm like fixing fences, mowing, etc based on person’s experience. AM shift starts between 6am-7am and PM shift starts about 3pm.
We are looking for someone who is interested in growing with a lesson barn, someone extremely reliable, motivated, responsible, hard working, mature adult with experience in general barn maintenance. 2 week trial period. Our barn worker will have help from our volunteers. Drama free, professional friendly environment. References are required.

Words cannot express the sadness we feel at the loss of Merkel Farm’s own Courageous Summer. Summer was a beloved pony with the biggest bravest heart around. She was our golden girl, truly a one of a kind pony, able to bring kids from timid riders to strong show individuals. There was nothing Summer couldn’t do, teaching her riders to be strong and confident especially with catching, grooming,tacking, riding and everything in between. She will be dearly missed by all, past and present students. We will be posting more photos over the days showing off our Golden Girl. We would love to see everyone’s photos of Summer if you want to tag us PS to our beautiful pony in heaven please give Woody lots of love and don’t worry, we will find a friend to keep Domino company.

Always hard to put into words the feelings and thoughts of loosing such an amazing horse woman. We will cherish the memories from years past and keep them close to our hearts 💕

Yesterday evening Laura passed away (went on to greener pastures as us horse people would say). She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer five years ago and had done really well up until recently. Her health went downhill fast and she chose to be at home her last week.

Laura didn't want a true obituary just for me to let everyone know that she believed that anyone is "survived" by how the effected the people who came in and out of her life. So today - hug a horse, cat, dog, gerbil, hamster, give someone a dollar or not, offer a hand, plant a flower, tell someone you love them, and be kind.

We will be planning a memorial gathering for later in the spring and we'll post details about that soon.

She also asked that in lieu of flowers donate to Hospice of the Chesapeake, Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, or Days End Farm Horse Rescue and/or adopt a Willowbend barn cat.

It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Merkel’s perfect gelding “Woody”, at the old age of 35. Woody has been a solid citizen since the dawn of time, helping with lessons and therapy children. In the older days he would be following right behind his life long buddy Fred. Now a days he used to be toggling alongside his friend Maverick or perusing the property. Woody has helped so many achieve their own dreams and conquer fears. He will be heavily missed.

A summer time filled with laughs, tears, new experiences and memories. We couldn’t be more proud of all that everyone accomplished! A huge thank you to the parents for the hours spent waiting ring side and all the food brought to keep the riders and coaches going. And of course a thank you to the for running yet another amazing show series. Onto Regionals and Fall teams!
