Are nail trims really necessary?
YES!
While some dogs will wear their nails down naturally, most dogs don't. If you can hear your dogs nails going click, click, click when they walk on hard surfaces, it's probably time for a trim.
Every dog is unique.
Some dogs will need their nails trimmed every few weeks, while others can go months in between nail trims.
However, even if your dog keeps their nails worn down fairly well on their own, it is still important to get them introduced to the nail trimming process when they are young. Eventually their activity level will no longer keep up with the growth rate of their nails and they will need to be trimmed.
It can be extremely stressful for senior dogs to acclimate to the nail trimming process. Oftentimes, this leads to stressful grooming or vet appointments and sometimes even costly sedation. Early exposure to nail trims has life long benefits for you and your dog.
Nails that aren't properly maintained are more prone to breaking, can cause discomfort when walking, and can even grow into the pads of your dogs toes. Ouch!
Sometimes, when dogs nails haven't been properly maintained, it's impossible to cut them back to a healthy length without causing pain and discomfort. If you cut them too far back, you can hit the quick and cause them to bleed.
Thankfully, frequent strategic nail trims can encourage the quick to recede. This allows dogs to get to a healthy nail length without pain or bleeding 💅
