During the solar eclipse, how do you keep your pets safe? Here's what Dr. Huff recommends:

"In theory, the eclipse is no more harmful to dogs and cats than a typical sunny day. Dogs and cats generally have an aversion to looking directly towards bright light, like the sun. Their curiosity is overridden by the discomfort and the need to squint when they see bright light. Your pets will most likely be safe as usual, but sometimes our pets surprise us, so on Monday, April 8, we recommend keeping your pets indoors during the peak times of the solar eclipse."

Which of these dogs has heartworm disease? It can take about 6 months for symptoms to appear, which is why it's important to get tested every year and to give heartworm prevention medication as prescribed.

Symptoms of heartworm disease include:
- coughing
- reluctance to exercise
- fatigue
- decreased appetite
- weight loss
- swollen abdomen
- heart failure

Fireworks can induce fear and anxiety in pets, but there are ways to help keep them calm. Here are a few:

- Desensitize them to the sights and sounds of fireworks by playing videos of fireworks displays on your TV or computer at a volume that they are comfortable with. Give them treats, toys or play with them and keep them distracted while the videos play in the background. When the real fireworks are happening outside, play the videos and close the windows and blinds to keep the light and sound out.

- Sometimes, pets are still too scared for desensitization training methods. If this is the case with your pet then medication may be the best option for them. There are many safe, reliable medications, and Dr. Huff can help recommend the right one for your pet based on their medical history and current needs.

- Desensitization training and medication are some of the most effective ways to reduce fear and anxiety during fireworks, but there are still risks even when utilizing these methods. One of the biggest risks is that your pet will become erratic and escape from their home or run away. To minimize this possibility, please keep your pet inside and be sure to close all doors and windows if you'll be leaving them at home. If they'll be coming with you to fireworks displays, please use a secure leash and harness so that they can't run away if they become frightened.

- It is also important to make sure your pet has up-to-date tags and a registered microchip, just in case they get away from you.

"This is Tess, my new mini Aussiedoodle from Holly Farms in Tontogony. Dr. Huff helped me with her in letting me know that she's allergic to chicken. Once that diagnosis was made, she's doing super. She's incredibly smart and she just graduated from puppy school. A friend of mine describes her as "lively". Translation = very energetic! She's turning 9 months at the end of March; this picture is when she was 6.5 months old. She's playful, wants to please, and is coming into her own really fast. These first few months were really hard...she's become a real joy and I'm so glad she's joined me ❤️"
