To my mom on her 3/4ths of a 100 birthday…

Mom, I say this with all seriousness—no one would ever guess your age (and I thank you for that, because it helps me too). No one, unless they really know you, knows how hard of a worker you are and how unbelievably strong you are—physically (I know you can throw more hay bales than most of my friends) and mentally.

Are there a few things I’d tweak if I could? Of course. (Well, it’s a list—but that’s for another day 😉)

You are seriously one of the best horse trainers around. I know that without a doubt. And I mean that globally. We may live in a small town and work with what we have—and sometimes tight funds—school horses and amazing boarders. Some ride out of love for their horse, others for passion, and some are super competitive and go the extra mile in all aspects. But I don’t know a single one who wouldn’t say they learned the most from you, hands down.

I don’t know what the next year will bring. But I do know this: you will never stop training or teaching people to be fearless—whether it’s on Sparkles the mini horse or a 17.5-hand monster who wants to plant them in the dirt. That moment—over a big fence or a tiny ground rail—when you tell them how amazing it was, and seeing those rider smiles... That’s like a birthday gift for you, every single day.

I wish I was home more, and maybe had a better half of my own who loved horses too (I mean we’ve got a farm, and she’d be an amazing rider with your teaching). But for now, I love you very, very much. Keep doing what you do—well, at least 90% of it—and know how many people care about you and think of you every time they see a horse, whether it’s every day or just a few times a year. They think: “Kathy trained me, made me better than I ever thought, and showed me her love for horses—and for the people around them.”

Love, Dan

During this group lesson the kids were working on rhythm to each jump while balancing themselves and focusing on their position. It’s a lot to think about at once, and they are getting stronger everyday!

Jocelyn and Pete with the flying change!

Claire and Pippin looking oh so straight down that outside line!

Liana and Rue working on rhythm and staying straight!

Alessi and Mojo working on balance, leads and rhythm!

Way to go, the focus on these four is commendable! We are soproud of you all! 💙 💚

☀️ Mother Nature came to play today and we are getting our first good dose of summertime weather at STF….

Because our four legged partners deserve the best, they were treated to a spa day… every single one of them. Steph, Jenna, Steffie and Betsy made sure they felt pampered and loved. 🥰

A cold hose, some chilled fruit, and some time in front of the fan. Quinn was really hoping for some cucumber eye patches, I told him next time Buddy! 🚿 🍉

This is a son writing about growing up on a farm with a mom who’s one of the best trainers around. At one point or another, she’s taught many of the trainers now working at other barns, and she’s dedicated her life to this world.

The pendulum swings every year in this business, but it has to be a passion you can’t live without to keep going. You have to love the people you teach. You have to care deeply about watching them grow—and, when the time comes, be strong enough to let them go when life or horses take them elsewhere.

If I could snap my fingers, we’d have a full barn—75% boarders, 25% lessons. A place filled with kids and adults learning, laughing, and riding every day. And my mom? She is still be up at 7 AM, teaching until 7 PM—because there’s nothing better to her than seeing someone get their first canter, clear a crossrail, or jump 4 feet and wear that grin.

I say all this because this article matters.
It’s important for lesson families, boarders, and future horse people to know: it takes a village to do this.
Whether it’s a backyard barn with two stalls or a Kentucky bluegrass estate with money to burn—it’s about heart.
And she’s got it in spades.
