Another bald eagle suspected to have avian influenza. These patients are very sick, with neurological symptoms and cloudy eyes. Eagles catch this disease from the birds they prey on, especially waterfowl. #baldeagle #hpai #wildlifeveterinarycare
Did You Know all this about bald eagles?!
Happy Halloween!
(This barn owl is trying to scare you)
We'll be releasing this rehabilitated bald eagle at Neabsco Regional Park at 10:30 tomorrow morning, Sunday, Oct 30th. Join us!
This 4 headed monster is actually 4 nestling barn owls. Three were rescued from the ground when the hollow tree containing their nest broke open in the storms last week. The 4th was rescued from a barn where he had been injured and his two siblings had been killed.
On Saturday all 4 were renested in an owl nest box placed in the broken tree where the two parents were still present.
It's time for this group of young foxes to receive their rabies vaccines and move to a larger pen. They will be ready for a soft release in about 4 weeks.
The red-shouldered hawk nestlings don't like people, but it's difficult to say No when you're hungry!
Box turtles love wet weather and their favorite foods include worms and slugs. Rain causes them to become more active and today we received three injured turtle patients, two were hit crossing roads and one had been chewed by an animal. Instead of posting their photos, we're posting video of a recovered turtle enjoying worms.
Last week’s orphan great horned owl in the back gained two little brothers when these two new nestlings arrived. They were on the ground next to a tree where the nest seemed to have fallen. No adults were seen but we’re hopeful they’re still in the area and will return when these babies are put in a new nest.
It’s orphan fox kit season again. March is when red foxes have their kits and finding orphans is inevitable. This thin 3 week old kit is comforted by snuggling with a donated fox fur hat. Why she was outside the den with no parent around is a mystery. #redfox #wildlifeveterinarycare
This hungry peregrine is recovering from a window strike. Considering this species can reach speeds of 180 mph when hunting prey, it’s amazing she survived with only a fractured coracoid and beak. She’s been a good patient and eats well, but she does try to chew off her wing wrap which needs to stay on for 3 weeks. #peregrinefalcon #wildlifevetcare
Release of the loon that was rescued after he was found stranded on ice.
This loon in winter plumage was rescued from ice on a small pond in Fairfax. These birds cannot walk on ice or any solid ground. They spend their time either swimming or flying, and always need to take off from water. This one had abrasions on her feet from the ice so her feet were treated, and she relaxed in a tub until she could be released back on open water.
Loons are a northern species that overwinters off the coast of Virginia, but flies inland during storms to ride out the bad weather. This one miscalculated and landed in a bad spot. #commonloon #wildlifevetcare
Release of a rehabilitated bald eagle at Duff McDuff Green Memorial Park. She flew well and soared above us while she was getting her bearings. While in our care, she gained a lot of weight, and also has a dense coat of feathers to help her stay warm in this bitter cold. #baldeagle #wildlifevetcare

Bald eagle release at Mount Vernon
Another successful release of a bald eagle we treated and rehabilitated. He was found on the Potomac south of Mount Vernon but when released flew all the way across to Maryland. The crowd felt inspired to give us Three Cheers!
