When the wind split open a tree with this barred owl nest in it, these babies ended up on the ground in the freezing cold. They survived long enough to be rescued and while they were warming up, their nest was replaced with a nest box. We were concerned how long it would be safe to leave these tiny owlets out in the cold while waiting to see if the parents would return, but didn't need to wait too long. This parent returned before dark. Everyone's quick actions resulted in a successful renesting!!!

A sick eagle suffering from the effects of lead poisoning. His blood lead level was so high our lead test machine gave an error message until we diluted the sample multiple times.
He's responding to chelation treatment and eating well. Our fear is that this high lead level has damaged his kidneys.
Please tell everyone you know not to use ammunition or fishing tackle containing lead. This is what lead poisons most of the eagles we see.

It's unusual to see moles above ground, especially in the winter. This fat Eastern mole should be deep underground below the frost line, but instead he was found on a driveway with a bloody nose and puncture wounds to his head. It appears some animal dug him up and wounded him. Moles are good for our yards because they eat grubs and aerate the soil, then leave once the grubs are gone. Unlike chipmunks and groundhogs, they don't hibernate.
We hope this one survives his wounds.

Another bald eagle suspected to have avian influenza. These patients are very sick, with neurological symptoms and cloudy eyes. Eagles catch this disease from the birds they prey on, especially waterfowl.

It's not too late to give! Members of the military, federal civil service, and postal service can donate through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC #46563). Even retirees can make a difference -- $25 will feed a rehabilitated hawk his favorite wild foods for a whole week!

A double crested cormorant that swallowed fish hooks and line. I was able to to get one hook out without surgery, but the other hook is down his esophagus and will require surgery. He hasn't been able to eat for days so he's very thin and weak. We're hoping he's strong enough to survive the surgery.

We had two terrible fishing hook and line injuries this weekend. One was a young black-crowned night heron hanging from loose fishing line that had become wrapped around his wing, and the other was a painted turtle with a hook lodged in his mouth. Both have serious injuries.
Please be careful when you are fishing to avoid non target species, and never leave loose line and hooks behind.
Thank you to the kind people who rescued these animals!

This 4 headed monster is actually 4 nestling barn owls. Three were rescued from the ground when the hollow tree containing their nest broke open in the storms last week. The 4th was rescued from a barn where he had been injured and his two siblings had been killed.
On Saturday all 4 were renested in an owl nest box placed in the broken tree where the two parents were still present.
