If you have ever wondered why we do not have any gray horses in our breeding program, melanomas are the reason. There are some absolutely wonderful grays out there that have been so hard for us to pass up πŸ’”

When breeding any horse we focus on temperament, conformation, and health before everything else! We have decided long ago that gray would not be a part of our program because of the risk of melanomas. We as breeders already have an increased risk of vet bills and loss from our horses when it comes to foaling complications and other risks that come with breeding. That puts vet issues at the front of our thoughts. Now horses in general can be walking vet bills for owners and we at River Boyne Farm never want to add any stress or heartache to anyone's plate. Our goal is to produce horses, to the best of our ability, that are sound and healthy well into their golden years. Therefore we decided long ago that even though a gray horse can be stunning we are not willing to have any of our beloved horses be lost to melanomas, so gray would simply not be in our program.

Now with that being said, we are so beyond excited to see the research being done to help us understand the gray gene better and what may lead to a higher likelihood of melanomas and how to potentially avoid it. With more time and study from these incredible research projects and more horses being tested we hope that maybe someday we will be able to confidently add a gray to our Connemara program ❀️

A newly published study led by Dr. Leif Andersson and colleagues at Uppsala University in collaboration with researchers at the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) discovered the existence of two different Gray alleles, one of which is associated with fast graying and increased risk for me...

We've decided to run a special in hopes of getting a few horses into their new homes before the holidays! Our program has been blessed with a lot of phenomenal boys these last few years, but that now leaves us needing to get a few moved for pasture/space needs.

From now until the end of the month we will take 10% off 🎊 potential terms possible depending upon the situation.

As always, PLEASE PM US WITH ANY SERIOUS INQUIRIES. Current list of horses listed below

β˜†2014 16.2/3h Bay Thoroughbred mare, Hannah Catherine. By Doctor Peach (Tiznow X Another Round) and out of Cochise County (Evansville Slew X Full and Fancy). This will be the only horse that we have in the four figure range

So in breeding animals, whether it be horses, cats, dogs, etc...we think about things that are passed on by genetics. We know each ones color genetics and what coat colors that their offspring may have when bred to a certain individual. What genetic markers for disease they may carry and even their potential for mature height/size. Today we'd like to talk about the little things that aren't necessarily genetics, but more funny quirks that are noticed in a family line.

The quirk we're talking about today is not one that is learned by watching each other. These family members have never met or even been across the same fenceline.

Last years c**t by Menlo Poetic Lad (Connemara stallion) and out of River Boyne's Rorschach (Connemara/TB mare) is the perlino gelding, River Boyne's Vanilla Ice aka Vinny. We noticed last summer/fall that Vinny had this adorable habit of resting his chin on the backs of his friends. Almost as if to look past them and gain your attention with his gorgeous crystal blue eyes. As planned, it worked! It always gained him nose kisses and pictures.

Well this years full brother, River Boyne's Kissable aka Kiss, has the exact same habit. None of our other horses do this, even their 2022 half sister River Boyne's Genie In A Bottle does not have this quirk. We of course find it adorable and are quite curious to see if the next sibling, planned for 2026, will have the same habit πŸ˜‚

Both 2023 perlino, River Boyne's Vanilla Ice aka Vinny, and his 2024 full brother, River Boyne's Kissable aka Kiss, are looking for their forever families that will give them all the nose kisses and attention that they ask for ❀️

Not so much a quirk, but a fun fact about these siblings/family. Rorschachs first foal was River Boyne's Genie In A Bottle aka Genie, our keeper filly. Genie has lived in the mare/foal field with her mother since the spring of 2023 before Vinny was born. She is generally not far from her mother and has taken to babysitting her brothers when needed (even though Vinny has since been moved to the boys side of the property). Last year Vinny was always either next to mom or big sister. This years c**t, Kiss, is most often found next to big sis. Genie plays with them, keeps them in line, and also protects them from the herd when need be. The three (Rory, Genie, and Kiss or last years trio of Rory, Genie, and Vinny) are often found grazing right next to each other.

I realize that it has been a while since I've made a post. I truly just haven't had the words, I honestly still don't, but I'll try anyway.

On July 1st our last foal of the season was born. It was a textbook delivery and both mom and baby were happy and healthy. All was picture perfect for the first two weeks until mom started acting a bit off. Long story short, we had our vet out immediately and started treatment/monitoring at home. Unfortunately our girl went downhill and we ended up at MSU within a few days. After 2 weeks of intensive care and some last ditch efforts, we had to let our girl go. Having to make the choice to let such a young horse go is absolutely devastating, but then having a one month old orphan foal just adds to the heartbreak.
In an attempt to keep things somewhat short I will give the cliff notes....

Our girl was diagnosed initially with Potomac Fever. A first for us and it was an intense road that took over a week before we started to see any improvement, but she was improving and overcoming that hurdle. Unfortunately the toll that it took on her immune system allowed for a gutteral pouch infection to take hold. This damaged the nerve function in her throat and she was unable to swallow and feed herself. The incredible vets at MSU did many gutteral pouch flushes with antibiotics and we even tried multiple tube feedings to get her nutrition. All while keeping a close eye on bloodwork, monitoring her pain, and keeping ice boots going to avoid founder/laminitis. However the odds were not in her favor for a recovery that would allow her to feed herself. With that knowledge and seeing the toll and discomfort that all of this was taking on her body, we chose to give her peace.

With all of that said, we would like to introduce her incredible foal that she left behind. Please welcome...

❀️‍πŸ”₯ RBF Call Me Your Majesty aka Arthur ❀️‍πŸ”₯

Arthur is by our handsome senior stallion, Sterling Spring Call Me Sir (SD Jim X Oakfields Her Majesty)
His incredible mother was/is none other than the stunning, WR Heavens Hope by starbuck (GG Starbuck X GVR Heaven sent by The King)

As some of you may have read about earlier in the season, our first foal of 2024 is also an orphan. We chose to bring in a nursemare for that filly, but unfortunately the mare ended up having several health issues and could not properly feed the filly. Seeing how the other orphan was not thriving on a nursemare, we chose to take this new orphan foals feeding into our own hands. Arthur was fed milk replacer every 4hrs round the clock for the first month after coming home until we could add in more milk replacer pellets and back down to every 6hr milk feedings. Luckily at almost 3 months old we are now completely done with milk replacer and just down to pellets, free choice hay, and some extra vit/mins.

Of course companionship and having a mother figure is incredibly important for young horses. As much as I wish we humans could be that for him, a true equine mother figure was needed. On the day we arrived home from MSU with this tiny bundle of energy who was in a state of confusion in not understanding where his mom had gone, we decided to try a few of our own mares with him as a babysitter. The final choice came as no surprise as she is hands down the sweetest and most easy going mare on the farm. With zero drugs needed for acceptance and honestly only a very short time of supervision from us humans, this mare took Arthur in immediately and it is so clear to all onlookers that this is HER baby. His new mom is our sweetheart of a mare, Epona of RBF. We imported this girl from Ireland as a weanling and she has been a saint since day one. Having had only two foals of her own, Cullen and Beck, we wouldn't necessarily consider her a seasoned mother, but this shows us that some are just destined and perfect for motherhood. Though Epona does not nurse Arthur, she is mom in every other respect.

A Rollercoaster of emotions is the only way to describe this foaling season. We are devastated over the loss of WR Heavens Hope, but we are also so thankful that she left us this perfect c**t as well as her 2023 filly, RBF Call Me The Queen of Thunder aka Queenie.
With this loss also comes immeasurable gratitude for his stand in mother, Epona. I truly don't know what we would have done without her. I'll admit that we have babied Arthur a bit more than most, but he will be heading out to the big kids pasture in this next week and he and his mom will be able to join the foal herd for winter.

We will add some pictures to remember our sweet mare, Hope, and to celebrate her beautiful boy and his new mom.

Time to showcase this stunning guy a bit more!

RBF Call Me The King of Hearts πŸ’•

When I chose this name it was for his stand out markings, but it quickly became apparent that it was far better suited to him than I could have imagined. Check out the hearts on his left side and the neat mutted/washed out red patch on his left butt cheek! He definitely stands out in a crowd. King, as we call him around the barn, truly has a knack for capturing the hearts of whoever he meets. Bold, playful, curious, sweet, willing, and boy is he stunning to watch move. If anyone here remembers our 2020 c**t, RBF Call Me Robert Emmet, and his incredibly easy going temperament...well King is almost an exact replica temperament wise. Which I suppose makes sense with them being half brothers. We love when our herd throws consistent and easy brains on their foals!

As much as I absolutely adore King and can't wait to see him all grown up someday, I know the best thing for him is going to be to find a family who has the time and ability to dote and love on him every day. He is such a sweetheart and wants nothing more than to be with his people every day. A long term family looking for a gelding to trail ride, drive, show in dressage, english/western, dabble in working equitation, mounted archery, and all around family fun would be our ideal situation for him.

King is a 2023 c**t who is GVHS registered, PSSM Negative, and expected to mature to a solid 15.2h just like his dam. This guy has had all appropriate training and handling for a yearling and is ready to head to his new home once castrated.

By our incredible stallion Sterling Spring Call Me Sir (SD Jim X Oakfields Her Majesty)
Out of our homebred mare RBF Fires of Beltane (CiCi's The Black Dahlia X RBF Lugh Mac Ethlend)

We have been a bit absent from Facebook these past few months as farm life has thrown us curveball after curveball. I guess no one ever said this lifestyle was easy πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and it truly is a lifestyle.

This season has brought us a lot of loss and heartbreak, things we will cover in another post when we are ready, and has definitely given us a reality check as far as our physical limitations. We adore each and every horse on the farm with their unique and individual personalities. The thought of seeing them leave is so incredibly difficult and I know I will be picky as always about where they go, but we must make the decision to downsize to help cover the massive vet bills we are accuring from trying to save one of our four legged family members.

That being said, and we sure don't mean to sound harsh, we would like to say that if you are not willing to call us on the phone and discuss the horses that you are interested in, then we just unfortunately are not willing to let one of our family members go home with you. Finding the perfect fit for each horse/rider is the number one most important thing to me. I absolutely could not do this job knowing that I didn't try my very best to ensure that each horse found their perfect person and had a safe long term home. I never want to get that call from someone saying that they just don't click with their new horse or that it isn't going to perform to the level that they need/want and that they must find it a new home. We will always do our very best to get you every video/picture that you need and answer any and all questions, but we just ask that you give us a call so that we can better discuss your needs and wants in an equine family member.

Now onto the tough part. We currently have several horses looking for new homes that we want to find that perfect match for. We, as always, are willing to get creative to help get them into that home. If you have been wanting to add a new horse to the pasture and if there has been one you have seen on our page that has caught your eye, please send us a message πŸ˜€

Some of who we currently have looking.....remember that we have loads of pictures of each horse as well as their dams/sires, grandparents, and siblings. All horses are either already or will be registered with the GVHS or ACPS before heading to their new homes.
PLEASE SEND US A MESSAGE, NOT JUST COMMENT ASKING FOR INFO, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A PARTICULAR HORSE.

Happy Birthday to these three handsome boys!! πŸŽ‚ I still find it funny that we have three horses on the farm that share a birthday

❀️ JRs Comet, 34yrs looks good on you!
I may be a bit biased, but after 19yrs of having this saint of a gelding in my life I think he looks fantastic even covered in mud from last night's rain and some unflattering poses πŸ˜‚

❀️Sterling Spring Call Me Sir turns the big 20 today! He still thinks he's a big tough stallion even after passing his teen years, but really he is just a big teddy bear who wants snuggles.
-Gypsy Cob

❀️ River Boyne's Gideon, my long awaited homebred gelding, turns 4yrs. Just a baby still πŸ₯Ή Really hoping we have time to start some training this summer as this boy loves the attention and to work. Already 15.3h too!

05/19/2024

I have been taking my time making this post. With breeding there are many ups and downs and unfortunately a lot of heartbreak.

We had a first time pairing born in 2021 that was absolutely spectacular! Everything we had hoped for, but unfortunately he was not meant for this world and we lost him at not quite 2 weeks old after surgery/university vet care.
Since then we have been trying for that exact same pairing, but things just hadn't worked out until we saw that black dot on the ultrasound last summer. My excitement was high, but I have learned to not hold my breath with these things. My hope all winter was for a blue roan filly to keep ❀️ After all this was my all-time favorite gypsy mare and I had decided I needed a filly of hers to keep as I was looking forward to retiring the mare to a riding career as I enjoyed riding her more than anything.

On April 28th at 4:45 am we had a stunning filly born who quickly stood up and checked all of the baby progress steps. Unfortunately that is where the excitement started to fade and the worry/stress set in. I will not go into all of the details here, but I will say that what resulted was my absolute worst nightmare. After the usual quick steps that can be done on the farm for the mare we're not helping, we rushed mom and baby to MSU. My beautiful 15.2h heart mare, Galway Girl of RBF, did not come home. She left us the sweetest and absolute perfect little girl that is now home with a nursemare.

I like to stick with car themed names for this stallions foals and though this isn't the name I had picked out originally, I think it fits this sweet girl perfectly. I've had this name reserved for another mare of mine for years, but after this years events I have decided that I will not be breeding that particular mare again as I cannot risk any issues.

Please welcome our little orphaned filly....

RBF Galway Girls Tin Lizzie

Named after Henry Fords Model T that first came out in 1908, one of the first cars to be built on a production line. There are a few stories as to how the Model T got it's nickname, but the one that seems to pop up the most is about a a circle track driver, Noel Bullock. In the early 1920s many car companies wanted to create publicity for their cars and racing was the way to do it. Noel Bullock was a circle track racer with his Model T car that looked a bit worse for wear. He showed up to the Pikes Peak, Colorado race with his car that was unpainted, lacked a hood, and was called by its owner "old Liz". Many bystanders took that name and decided since she looked more like a Tin can than a race car, they would call her "Tin Lizzie". Much to the bystanders surprise, Tin Lizzie won that race beating some of the most expensive cars at that time. Tin Lizzie proved both the speed and durability of Henry Fords Model T.

This filly is a full sibling to our incredible c**t born in 2021 that we lost, RBF August Duesenberg aka Duesy.
By French imported Blue roan stallion, Rolls Royce Merlin of RBF (GW Abe X Silky Alana-SD Flash Harry) and out of our amazing mare, Galway Girl of RBF (Lake Ridge British Sterling X Seabra)

Her color is still being debated as at first glance she looks to be a black tobiano, but under that coat at the base she has a suspicious amount of white hairs πŸ€”
Time will tell us if she is Blue roan or not, but we are not in a rush as this girl is staying right here.

Though it is bitter sweet seeing this miracle filly out in the field without her mother, Gilly, we will be forever grateful for this sweet old nurse, Halloween candy.
