Last weekend I was reunited with my client, Regina Waterhouse & her fur babies, Groucho & Newbie. We met many years back at our former residential building. These cuties have it made in their beautiful new home. It’s great that my reputation and services are in the back of my clients’ minds even when we haven’t spoken or seen each other in years. And so flattering to be asked to bring a “bunch of my business cards” so she can spread my name to all of her fellow residents and recommend me personally. The Colorado General Assembly recently passed unprecedented and groundbreaking legislation known as the Colorado Wild Horse Project The bill's primary sponsors were Sens. Joann Ginal (D) and Perry Will (R), House Majority Leader Rep. Monica Duran (D), and House Minority Leader Rep. Mike Lynch (R). These sponsors secured bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly, where the bill was passed by an overwhelming majority after expert testimonies by advocates, including In Defense of Animals’ Senior Campaigner for Wild Horses and Burros, Ginger Fedak. We're incredibly grateful to all of them!

My 15 year old Sphynx, Lady Marmalade, enjoying the last rays of today's sunshine (6:30pm)in the "Sphynx Way" as her breed shouldn't be exposed to bright sun because of their extreme susceptibility to sun damage to both her skin and eyes. At age 15 she's regarded as a Geriatric Senior Cat (age 15 and above).

Things I never knew, until now.

👩‍🏫 There is a body of evidence that shows coconut oil might not be the superfood you thought it was ...

🥥 Coconut oil is advertised as being high in MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) … but half of them are lauric acid which is an LCT (long-chain triglycerides) … not the beneficial MCTs that can slow dementia, reduce seizures and slow heart disease.

MCTs are broken down much quicker than the LCTs in lauric acid. MCTs enter the bloodstream, reach the liver and are converted to ketones to provide instant fuel for the liver, brain and body … and are less likely to be stored as fat.

The LCTs in lauric acid go through several steps before reaching the blood stream and are ultimately stored as fat. Research shows lauric acid increases inflammation more than any other saturated fatty acid … so it can impede the benefits provided by true MCTs.

And lauric acid is anti-bacterial … but that’s a problem. The cell walls of some bacteria in your dog’s gut (gram-negative bacteria) contain an endotoxin that can cause an immune reaction … and low-grade inflammation. However, lauric acid can kill the gram-negative bacteria, which is normally a good thing … but that releases the endotoxins from the cell walls into the body ... potentially leading to more disease-causing inflammation.

🥥 But coconut oil isn’t all bad. It has natural antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties so it’s great to heal cuts and wounds. It can also be used on your dog’s skin and coat to hydrate the skin and stop itching from dry skin. And some even say it repels fleas and ticks if you rub it into your dog’s coat.

Just use caution when feeding it to your dog.

Better yet, to get the benefits of MCTs, give your dog MCT oil without lauric acid.

Sunset walk to the beach w Bentley & Cole. It was a beautiful time & hopefully Bentley slept well after our 90 minute adventure followed by a late dinner well-earned. Needless to say both boys cleaned their bowls completely.

⚠️ If your dog isn't feeling well and has loose stools, rice is the LAST thing you want to give him. It's true he needs fiber to absorb excess fluids and nutrients to replace the ones he’s lost ... but rice has neither!

Here's why you should avoid rice for your dog ...

🍚 Arsenic Is Common In Rice
Health effects from arsenic include cancer, vascular disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, neurotoxicity and reduced brain function. Arsenic is in pesticides and herbicides, wood preservatives, phosphate fertilizers, industrial waste … so it drains into the groundwater that feeds wells and irrigation systems. And rice appears to absorb more arsenic from water than other crops.

🍚 Rice Can Lead To Diabetes
A diet high in carbohydrates like rice increases the insulin demand in your dog, and that stresses the pancreas and can lead to diabetes … and today 1 in 300 dogs will get diabetes.

🍚 Rice Is Nutrient Poor
Rice is devoid of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It’s a carbohydrate and dogs don’t need carbs. They survived for thousands of years on other animals, fats and plant materials like berries and grasses.

🍚 More Rice Means Less Meat
When there’s rice in dog food, that means there’s less meat in the formulation and dogs need MEAT to make essential amino acids like taurine. And rice often outweighs other ingredients and can lead to weight gain and diabetes.

🍚 Rice Isn’t Natural Food For Dogs
Like wheat, corn and barley, rice isn’t found in an edible state so it needs to be processed. Wild dogs don't forage in rice or wheat fields ... they're looking for the henhouse.

So really, rice isn’t nice … for your dog.
