Think about your dog as you read this:

I just saw a small dog, maybe a chihuahua, running down a 2-way busy thoroughfare (for those in palm beach county, Florida - Congress Ave.)

I jumped out of my car about 20 yards behind him, with treats. We were on the sidewalk. He had just crossed 6 lanes without getting hit.

On the off chance he may be trained, I kneeled down, quarter turn away and yelled, ‘COME!’

Well, he took off running the opposite direction, running away from me at full speed. He was so fast, there was no way to catch up or even follow him.

Last I saw, he had moved off the sidewalk into the street. Towards Boynton Beach Blvd intersection. (For those who know the area).

I cruised for 20-30 minutes making multiple U-turns with the hope to find him. No luck.

My only hope is that he moved away from the Main Street and his owner found him.

Otherwise, there is no way he was going to survive.

Now, thinking about your dog running down a main thoroughfare, most certainly to his demise, would it have been worth a few hundred bucks for him to; a) not run out the front door and b) come running toward the cue, ‘COME!’

That’s what’s at stake.

Hire a professional trainer.

Teach your dog to go TO people rather than play the ‘keep away’ game.

This poor dog may not make it home tonight. A little training could help the little buddy have a different outcome.

Your closet Buy a thunder shirt, turn up the music, keep collar and tag on inside the house, just in case. Ensure your dog cannot slip his collar. And, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - KEEP THEM INSIDE. Especially, your indoor/outdoor cat.

Do whatever’s necessary to help your buddy. If thunder and fireworks terrify them, prepare and protect.

Today was one of those amazing days where it was hot, humid and raining. We all got soaked in the rain while the pups romped and played.

Dogs Playing for Life gives these pups time out of their kennels, plus a chance to socialize with other pups. It also helps the staff to observe behavior and make notations toward coupling each pup with their proper adopter(s).

As we get to know each pup’s personality, it’s impossible not to fall in love with so many of them. It’s not their fault they’re there.

Come meet our pups. Our adoption team will help match you with your furever playmate.

If you are not ready to adopt; there are other ways to help. Foster, volunteer, donate.

So many incredibly deserving dogs (and cats) at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. 7100 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Come visit!

A gentle reminder:

Something like 99% of dog deaths begin in a puppy mill and end up being euthanized in a shelter.

Most puppy-mill dogs are not properly socialized, have lived in their own squalor and have not learned simple manners like bite inhibition from their mothers.

People think their pets are cute until they grow up, continue to soil the rug, chew the furniture or shoes and/or exhibit aggression or resource guarding.

Instead of training them, or learning to condition their behavior to live harmoniously, all too often, people surrender their imperfect pets to shelters. They simply can’t or don’t want to deal, don’t want to invest the time and they don’t know where to turn.

So, here’s the message:

Be a dog trainer, not a dog owner and whatever you do, adopt a shelter dog rather than shop a designer dog from a pet store that sells dogs. NEVER EVER buy a dog from a pet store unless they are shelter dogs up for adoption and check your ‘breeder’.

A little time, love and dedication will yield you back 100 fold joy, companionship, laughs and teach you about unconditional love.

Oh, and if you don’t have time - hire a professional dog trainer. We’re out here and we’re committed to your relationship with your pup.

Ella on Long Island, NY.

Ella is a 3 year old TRAINED female (spayed) and very sweet GSD. She has some challenges with other dogs when resources are present. A scenario that’s easy to avoid.

She’s currently in Bethpage with a trainer who stepped up when her human parents passed away. The trainer cannot keep her forever.

If you or anyone you know is interested to adopt an AKC purebred GSD, please send a message to me and I will connect you.

Transport may be possible for out of state adopters.

Let’s save Ella from going to the shelter.

Another installment from one of my favorite journalists, Maggie Lange.

You’ve found that person you want to share space with—you just have that connection. But your pets don’t feel the same way. Behaviorists weigh in on what you should do now.

Dog training isn't just about training a dog. A dog's owner must also learn certain behaviors that help cue their dog's responses.

🐾 POEM OF A DOG
I'm the one who's always waiting for you.
Your car has a special sound that I have imprinted on my senses, I can recognize it in a thousand.
Your steps have a magic bell.
Your voice is music to my ears.
If I see your joy, it makes me happy!.
Your scent is the best.
Your presence moves my senses.
Your waking up wakes me up
I contemplate you sleeping and for me you are my God, I am happy watching your sleep.
Your look is a ray of light.
Your hands upon me, hold the lightness of peace and the sublime display of infinite love.
When you leave, I feel a huge void in my heart.
I keep waiting for you again and again.
I am the one who will wait for you all your life today, tomorrow and forever:
I am your dog.

Don’t touch starfish....❌❌❌
This is a request to all tourists, don’t tuch starfish. REQUEST TO ALL GUIDE Please make your clients aware of this.
What happens when we lift a starfish out of water for an impromptu photo session?
All over the body of starfish are papules called dermal gills. Carbon dioxide gases are exchanged for oxygen between the coelomic liquid of the starfish and the water. Essentially, it’s how they breathe, like having hundreds of tiny noses all over your body.
As fresh air is toxic to starfish and they can’t hold their breath for very long, each time they’re lifted out of the water for a photo op, they are drowning and suffering from a build up of carbon dioxide. It’s the equivalent of someone filling your lungs with water for a little while and then emptying them again. It’s not a good day out. When this is done repeatedly, it’s a flip of the coin as to whether the poor creature can die from drowning or the stress of being semi-drowned so many times.
Wildlife are not our playthings. Just because a creature is slow enough to be caught by human hands, that doesn’t give us the right to do so, and the social media attention gained certainly does not justify the harm caused to the critter.
This is an act we’re all guilty of at some point. What was happening to that animal in the moment didn’t cross our minds. But now we know better, so we must do better.
