This class specifically focuses on developing superb loose-leash walking skills with an additional focus on handling and public access skills. Public access refers to the ability of a dog to be calm, collected, and under control when out and about in public with everyday distractions. Walking tools will be provided to you at no additional charge to the price of the class. This class is open to reactive and unconfident dogs, and we strongly encourage their participation!
Here’s Jet the Malinois working on his skills in our new Advanced Obedience Class! Due to illness and travel, Jet was the only one in class which means he got a nice 1:1 with us last evening. We are putting our skills together and tying up loose ends, and we are excited to out it all together into a nice routine at the end of the series.
This clip is from last week’s Back-To-Pack.
Here I am starting the afternoon session. I start by having my personal dogs out first (Whippet, Border Collie, Dutch Shepherd) as well as any other dog that is appropriate and I know I understand and can redirect (Border Collie). I start by getting the most trustworthy and least invasive dogs out first, and go through our roster one by one by this order. The dogs to come out towards the end are the dogs that have the most amount of triggers, the most sensitive, or the carry the most risk. These are the dogs that Back-To-Pack (BTP) are meant for. Funny enough, I actually let out the dogs that carry no trauma or worry out last. These two (German Shepherd & Golden Retriever) are perfectly friendly dogs, but, since there are sensitive dogs in this room, they cannot approach, sniff, or interact with most of the dogs here. This is not because they won’t be friendly and I don’t trust them, but rather they would innocently trigger the dog that they approach. And that’s not fair to the BTP dogs. I need to show the BTP dogs that they can trust me, and they can trust the other dogs here. If I am negligent to that fact, that BTP dog can continue to lose trust, and feel justified in their reaction, especially if it works. The cycle must be broken.
I ran out of room. More in the comments.
