Let’s talk: Building Trust and Hand Taming
LIZARD EDITION!
It’s important to note that reptiles won’t bond with you in the same way as a cat or dog so building a healthy, positive and trust based relationship is key!
For lizards and geckos, food is going to be your best motivator to help them learn to associate you with their favorite treats! Food you offer during hand taming or hand feeding can be high reward like a silk worms, horn worms or wax worms or simply a dietary favorite of theirs! Initially utilizing feeding tongs instead of your hand and working up to just feeding out of your fingers or palm.
Once you work up to your animal willingly eating or sitting in your hand, it’s time to slowly start moving them from hand to hand. Keep in mind, this step will take TIME! Create positive experiences and always place the animal back into their habitat once they’ve calmed down or sat still for a moment to create that positive experience. Some species, like Duckweed, take a lot more work from a very young age than some other species. But even so, I find he’ll readily come see my hand for food instead of running away and once in a while he’ll climb into my hand and on my arm!
If you have more questions about this topic, please consult us in store! We have lots of tips and tricks!

Help! My aquarium is cloudy!
Clouding is common—and expected—with freshly started aquariums. This aquarium had been set up the day prior to the “day one” picture.
Why is my tank cloudy?
White cloudiness like this is caused by a few different things.
1) Dusty decor/substrate.
When placing new substrate or new decor (especially rocks!), it’s a good idea to rinse them thoroughly before putting them in your tank. Rinsing will ensure that no dust or dirt they have on them will cloud your water.
2) Bacterial bloom.
The first few days a tank is cycling, there is a whole lot going on! Nitrifying bacteria in the tank is blooming as it begins colonizing the new environment. Bacterial blooms are completely normal and totally harmless! It’s a sign your bacteria is doing its job, and the cloudiness will fade on its own as the cycling process continues. Bacterial blooms can also occur in established tanks when the bacterial balance within the tank is disrupted. Disruptions include water changes, adding new residents, sudden temperature changes, etc.! The clouding seen in this tank is due to a bacterial bloom.
Regardless of the cause, clouding is an easy fix. A quick water change will help reduce the amount of clouding in the water. After a water change, let your tank sit and let your filters do their job! Your water should be clear within a few days.
If water changes don’t do the trick, you can try adding Clarity. Clarity will bond to the large particles in your water and cause them to sink to the bottom of your tank, where they can be easily removed with a gravel vacuum! Your water will be clear in no time.

She is indeed, very scary… 😅A Bull snakes’ hiss is not only loud, but very raspy-sounding due to a flap of cartilage in front of the trachea that vibrates as air passes by it. A gentleman recently contacted us about a collection of snakes that was owned by his friend. His friend was unfortunately found deceased in his home that morning, and he wasn’t sure what to do with his collection. All of his family lived out of state, and no one else was able to take them, so we stepped in to help. All of these guys will be available for adoption after they have a clean bill of health and they are eating regularly for us! Keep an eye out on our socials and in store for when that time comes
Before you tuck away for the week, be sure to stop by and take advantage of our Memorial Day sale today! 10% off store wide with 20% off select items! Help! My snake didn’t get all of their shed off! Don’t worry! Stuck shed is an easy fix. A quick bath will do the trick! Watch how we help our scaleless rat snake get his stuck shed off after a poor shed attempt. Scaleless reptiles in general have a harder time shedding, and we do this semi frequently with him. Sometimes he sheds great, sometimes he sheds poorly (like in the video). Making sure your reptile doesn’t have any stuck shed is super important (especially for lizards!). Stuck shed, if left to build up, can cut off circulation to body parts (tail tips and toes are especially susceptible to this), resulting in necrosis, and even loss of limbs. It’s important to check your reptile after every shed to make sure they have successfully removed all of their old skin.
Join us on a fish rescue mission! We were contacted by a local motel about some fish tanks that had been abandoned in one of their rooms. It turned out to be a many hour ordeal, but luckily all of the fish seem to be doing great! They will be available for sale in about a week after they go through quarantine!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! In a complete violation of space and privacy, these two individuals stole our employee’s entire wallet out of her purse. Please help us identify these individuals. After stealing her wallet they quickly went to Target and tried to use her company card to spend $800 which is how we were alerted to this issue. The Bozeman police department is working with us to get the footage from the target check out cameras on Monday. If you recognize these people please let us know so we can advise the authorities and get the stolen items returned.
