Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and with that, loads of chocolate hearts and goodies. Since chocolate is toxic to your pets, please keep it out reach of any 4-legged “counter-surfers”. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, elevated blood pressure, cardiovascular issues and, in severe cases, even death. Factors that influence the level of toxicity are: the percent of cacao in the chocolate, the amount ingested, and the size of your pet. If you suspect your pet has helped themselves to your Valentine’s Day stash, please give your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline a call as soon as possible!

Can you spot the signs of hypothermia in your dog? Mild hypothermia can present with shivering and lethargy. As it progresses, your dog will become increasingly unresponsive as her body goes into heat conservation mode. If not treated, hypothermia can be fatal. Prevention is key, as is knowing your dog’s tolerance for the cold. Small and short-hair breeds benefit from doggy jackets to keep their cores warm. Booties can help, too, as a lot of heat escapes through a dogs’ foot pads. Stay warm out there!
