The Canny Canine was created on the simple premise that pet owners who actively engage with their dogs have a better relationship and often a happier, more well-behaved dog. Our goal is to provide a fun, supportive, laid back training environment where folks from all over the Gallatin Valley can take classes and learn how to have success in training their dog from obedience classes to dog sports.
There are so many cool things to do with your dog and The Canny Canine can teach you how to do it. The Canny Canine. Where Smart Dogs Train. Carolyn Murray, CNWI

Class registration opened late Saturday night and you guys have been signing up like crazy! I opened up a couple extra classes to make sure everyone gets the schedule they want!
Thank you all for a great feedback about Sunday obedience drop-ins, too! I’ve also received a couple more sport suggestions and I’m gonna make that stuff happen!! Stay tuned for more training opportunities!
Many thanks to all of you for your support! 🙏🙏🙏
Being kind and a good sport is harder for some than it is for others.
It takes a village to put on events: from hosts, to volunteers, to officials, and competitors. Everyone plays a roll in getting trials up and running.
We are all in it together - remember that on trial days. 😉
The NACSW Education Division's Instructor Certification Program was developed to ensure a standard and quality of instruction that adhered to the founders’ original concepts of training that relied on dogs’ instinctual independent hunting and puzzle solving skills. Today there are instructors in...

SureFire Jean Louise “Scout” 9/12/13 - 7/06/24.
Words continue to escape me, even a couple weeks later. This was a tough year for Scout. She got very sick in January and never truly recovered. It wasn’t until May that tests confirmed what we all kinda knew was going on. Lymphoma sucks.
Scout was my dog and she wasn’t afraid to let the rest of the world know it. From sneaking up behind people and firing barks up their ass to snubbing pretty much everyone she met, she was a character. Most people would say she was a real jerk 😁. She was high prey drive and low confidence. Not an amazing combination but we accomplished a lot. We were truly a team as there was no “making” Scout do anything.
K9 Nose Work was amazing for her and we traveled all over the western United States competing. She held the most titles of any white shepherd in NACSW competition and achieved at the highest title of Elite 1 before she retired last year. We weren’t the best but we worked hard as a team. She absolutely loved to search.
We had an amazing month of June. We got to spend time in Cascade Locks & Stevenson, spent over a week on 135 acres in the mountains outside of Klamath Falls, and traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota. A couple days after getting home it was clear that something had changed and that the medications were no longer helping.
Scout was one hell of a dog. Ten years was simply not long enough.
Godspeed, my friend….

Quit listening to people who don’t like you. Who don’t want what’s best for you.
Quit letting the voices of the nay-sayers. The ones who always have something negative to say.
Quit sitting at the table with the gossipers.
Quit comparing yourself. Quit believing you need to be someone different to achieve anything great. Quit wishing you were in someone else’s shoes. (this!)
Quit being hard on our bodies and calling them anything other than miraculous.
Quit the negative self talk.
Quit choosing people pleasing over honoring your needs.
Quit being so hard on yourself.
Quit tolerating being lied to, disrespected and gaslit because you want to be a good person. It’s okay to see the truth in people too.
Quit letting the past haunt your future.
Quit letting insecurity control you. Quit thinking you don’t measure up. Quit thinking you aren’t deserving of good things.
Quit ignoring your inner voice and start listening to your heart.
Quit playing a side part when you’ve been the main character in your story all along.

Very sad news today: our buddy Matt passed. Matt lived a full and wonderful life of 16 years. He was still coming to class and searching up until about two weeks ago.
Matt was a working border collie who had strong opinions, and his opinions didn’t always align with the work he was bred to do. But those opinions served him well in sport detection. He had strong independent hunt drive and excellent problem solving skills. Matt lost his hearing a couple years ago but that never stopped any of us from cheering him on. There are too many memories and too many stories.
Matt was a class favorite and a poster child for geriatric dogs and activities. He just kept going.
Good boy, Matt. That’ll do…..❤️❤️❤️

Rue got between two elevated hides tonight and put on an amazing display! Wow!! #bozemannosework #montanak9nosework #thecannycanine
My Intro to Odor dogs got their first taste of container searches last night. The final search was 28 boxes with one hide deep in the search area. This was no challenge for the infamous, Lady! This 12 year old chiweenie was on fire!
Zander is another up and coming puppy. He’s about 7 months old. He was shy in his first class but is now solving problems with a speed of a seasoned expert! When he’s not working, he’s wiggling! There is space in our Intro to K9 Nose Work classes this January!
It’s been a busy couple months of classes and training and our social media pages have been sadly neglected. We have a lot of puppies starting classes this year and all of them are amazingly talented. Millie is a 9 month old labragal that start K9 Nose Work a couple months ago. Here she is working for primary reward. Millie has an amazing sport detection future ahead of her!
Juniper’s first nose work class. She couldn’t believe her luck! #thecannycanine #bozemannoseworkdogs #montanak9nosework
Huckleberry having a great time searching for chicken! #thecannycanine #bozemannoseworkdogs #montanak9nosework
January is all about containers! Tonight we worked with a tennis ball, saltines, a biscuit, and Cheetos in the search area as distractors. #TeamBozeman dogs only care about target odor! What kind of distractors are you working?
