Pick me🌸 Pick me🌸

Hey I'm Kukur and I’m Woods’ Pet of the Week! We think I am around 5 years-old. I am hearing impaired, so the good news is I can nap anywhere, anytime! As you can see I'm a big hunk! I'm really just a gentle giant, that wants nothing more than to snooze and cuddle with you. I'm a mellow boy that'd make the perfect couch potato companion. I'd love a chill family that can take me on some short walks or let me romp around in a secure yard. I promise to show you lots of love!
Meet me in SLO between 12-4 any day of the week!

Available for adoption.
Delilah is waiting for someone to say she is safe at home.
Delilah has been with Operation Rescue, Inc.,since July of last year.
I have taken her all over the place and everyone that meets her loves her bubbly, social personality.
We can't understand why she's still at the rescue. She loves people, loves kids, has done well with a number of dogs, seems uninterested in cats, loves toys, loves butt scratches, walks great on leash, but she has not yet found a home.
If you think she might be the right fit for you, please call (805)937-5877, to meet her.

Lola needs our help friends. She is very much at peace in this photo and we want to help her continue to feel safe, loved and happy. We can't share the details of her history here but suffice to say she had a pretty rough life before we were able to get her to safety. And she is safe now, but in a very temporary home. She needs to find her forever person and start building new and happy memories.

Lola is about 2 yrs old and in good health. She is silly and playful but also craves attention and affection and will happily curl up next to you for some TV time or keep your lap warm while you read. She never lived in a home before so it's taking her a minute to get her potty routine down but she is super smart and picking it up fast. She walks nicely on the leash after a few minutes of getting her initial excitement out and will match your pace. She really likes treats, good food and to sleep in the bed with her person. She needs to be an only dog (for now) but is not reactive on leash when walking. She is more comfortable with women than men, but a patient man with soft energy and the ability to just give her the time and space to come to him will win her over in no time. She has some low grade separation anxiety so someone who is home most of the time is the best fit for her.

Lola is one of the lucky ones to have left her former life behind but she can't live in limbo. Without a home, her good luck was for naught. I know it's the holidays and everyone has other things on their mind and other plans. But what greater gift is there than saving a life?

We are looking for a forever home for Lola, not a rescue, shelter or foster. She needs stability and to not bounce around or live in a kennel. If you think you and Lola could be a good fit for each other please reach out, and if not please share this widely. We need her perfect person to see her (soon). Thank you!

Look at that smile and those ears! Bruce is looking for a home at the Santa Maria, CA Animal Shelter. Let's help this senior guy find his forever home quickly.

Happy Holidays! It’s me, Bruce, here at the Santa Maria Animal Shelter just getting into the holiday spirit. You know, it is the most wonderful time of the year and all. It is also the season for giving and I would like to give my charming personality to a lucky person. Isn’t that great? The person who would do best with me is someone who is home a lot. I adore being with my people and I don’t enjoy myself when they are not around. Speaking of fun, I think going on walks is quite fun and I have been known to jog a mile or so with a friend from the shelter. I know, who would have thought that at my age, right? Just proves that age is simply a number. Did you know that I don’t mind most cats, so I could possibly live with one. Dogs are ok in my book but would be best as an only dog, so I don’t have to share anything. Oh, and you would never believe this, but I can hear things far away. 😉 So, if you would like to take a senior guy home and think we would be awesome together give a ring to the shelter staff at 805-934-6119 x 7. Be Merry! Bruce

•Muzzles are a fantastic tool to help keep dogs and people safe.
Did you know that dogs wear muzzles for all sorts of reasons?
Dogs might wear muzzles because:
He eats rocks, socks, or other non-food items that can be toxic or cause expensive and life-threatening surgeries.
She is nervous of other dogs, and the muzzle helps keep everyone safe during off-leash hiking or on-leash walks.
The muzzle works as a cue to tell other owners to give the dog some space.
The owner wants to teach their dog to be comfortable wearing a muzzle in case the dog must wear one someday at the vet's office.
A properly-fitted basket muzzle can do all of this, and more! Best of all, if you take the time to train your dog to wear the muzzle, it should be comfortable for your dog.

•Teaching Calming Chin-rest behavior is useful for training shy, overly excited, or reactive dogs.

Think about the last time that you had to defend yourself. Not to the extent where you needed to get physical maybe but just to the point where you had to tell someone that you were uncomfortable. Think about your own individual threshold in that scenario. Some people wouldn't tolerate much and others could have someone pressing them and pressing them before they decided to speak up.

Maybe the next time you see that person you're not going to have the best feeling about their presence.

Every negative encounter your dog has with another dog creates an association that dogs can bring unpredictability and discomfort. The individual dog and the degree of severity within that negative encounter predicts your dog's future feelings and behaviour.

Some more resilient dogs would shake off a negative encounter and it might then take many for that dog to start to feel uncomfortable. For other dogs it may take a single negative encounter to cause weariness or reactivity.

When your dog reacts to another dog step in and remove your dog calmly and positively from that situation. Equally if your dog is one causing distress to another dog step in and remove your dog calmly and positively from that situation. Understand that there is discomfort on either side of the equation. When dogs are left to handle situations how they best feel appropriate this may not be in line with your dog going on to feel comfortable around other dogs.

When dogs "correct" one another this is something to address rather than brush off. Even the most tolerant of dogs will lose their cool, don't let it get to that point. For puppies, this is even more important as they are always making associations to the world around them.

Remember that it is your job to help your dog feel safe in this world.

Look at this sweet senior looking for her final forever home. Please help spread the word about 9 yr old Roxanne at the Santa Maria Animal Shelter.

Hi all. It is me, Roxanne, and I am new to the adoption floor at the Santa Maria Animal Shelter. I am so happy to finally get to toss my paw in the ring to find a forever home. Shelter life isn’t terrible, but home life would be super duper! Since coming here, I haven’t met any dogs nose to nose but I don’t give the ones who bark for my attention the time of day. So, I might like hanging out with another dog and would be willing to meet any new dogs residing in my potential forever home. Also, I haven’t met any cats or kids so not sure on those. What I can tell you is that I am not one of those “bull-in-the-china-shop” gals. Those days are over because with maturity comes calmness and I just like chillaxin’. A friend took me out on a walk and I impressed her with my leash skills. Now, what would’ve impressed me is if she would have given me a treat or two to show how awesome I am. Why no treats? Well, the vet team seems to think I am a little “fluffy” shall we say, so I am on the “D” word. You know, the one no one wants to be on. Ugh! I imagine if I was in a home getting regular walks and activity I could shed some lbs and get back to a more agreeable eating structure. Just sayin! So, if you can help me get this weight loss program into overdrive and want a cute (if I do say so myself) gal to join you in life’s adventures, give the shelter employees a jingle at 805-934-6119 x 7. Hope to see you real soon! Roxanne

NOSE WORK 🐽🍃

Dogs are lead through the world by their nose. Nose work exercises can help to refocus dogs especially in places where they may be overstimulated. For anxious dogs, nose work can be a great stress reliever as it engages the brain, providing the dog a positive task.
