ATTENTION FRIENDS 📢

Canine upper respiratory infection is currently making its way through the Tampa Bay area. We have seen multiple cases at our hospital over the past few weeks. Dogs that frequently board at facilities, doggie daycares, grooming facilities, and dog parks are at a higher risk of contracting the infection. If your dog displays symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or eye/nasal discharge, please give us a call.

A veterinarian is a professional who treats the injuries and illness of animals. They use medical tools and X-rays machines to diagnose and treat the animals appropriately. They provide services for pets that physicians would for their human counterparts. Come join the Westbay family with Dr.Scroggins , Dr.Smart and Dr.Adams! Full, Part Time, or Seasonal Schedule

Have you ever wonder if the pavement is to hot for you pet to walk on these hot summer days? Hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If you can do so with comfort it’s okay for your pet to walk on, if it’s to hot for you it’s to hot for your pets paws.

The following alert is from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association regarding the Canine Influenza outbreak in Palm Beach, Florida. While we have not had any cases in our area or at our hospital, we want to keep our clients informed of this development when making travel plans.

If you have recently traveled to the Palm Beach county area or your pet is exhibiting any symptoms detailed below, then please contact our office. There is a vaccine available that we carry that covers this strain(H3N2), and we are happy to vaccinate your pet.

If any cases occur in our area then we will immediately pass this information to you.
_________________________________________
Canine Influenza Alert:

The FVMA has received reports of a Canine Influenza outbreak in Palm Beach, Florida. The following information has been shared by the Palm Beach Veterinary Society:

• The strain identified in this outbreak is H3N2 (not the variant identified in the Chicago outbreak)

• 7 cases have been reported (between 6/16/21 and 6/24/21) in the 33470 zip code which includes Loxahatchee and the Acreage

• 1 case has been reported (6/21/21) in the 33411 zip code which includes Royal Palm Beach, West Palm Beach and part of Wellington

Palm Beach Veterinary Society urges veterinarians in the 33470 and 33411 zip codes and the adjacent areas to watch for clinical signs in their patients and triage potential respiratory cases in the parking lot to prevent contamination of your practice. Additionally, they are encouraging veterinarians to educate your clients with notices in the lobby, social media posts, and emails or newsletters to clients informing them of what symptoms to look for and educate them about vaccination against Canine Influenza.

As of Friday, June 25, there are approximately 50-60 dogs housed at Big Dog Ranch in Loxahatchee, Florida that are affected. BDRR has indicated that the source of the infection originated outside of their facility and has affected a portion of their dogs. This indicates a potential community acquired infection.

Palm Beach Veterinary Society has received additional information that there are at least six other client owned dogs in Palm Beach County that have tested positive for Canine Influenza. They are working to identify any potential areas of the county that may be more affected than others.

Symptoms of Canine Influenza include:
· Fever, sometimes of 104-106°
· Coughing similar to Bordetella bronchiseptica
· Sneezing
· Ocular and/or Nasal Discharge
· Lethargy
· Decreased Appetite
· Secondary infections
· Pneumonia

We are thrilled to announce a new addition to the Westbay Family!

Our doctors, staff, and pets would like to welcome Dr. Amanda Lenart to the team. Dr. Lenart brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion along with her, and will be reinforcing the excellent standards of care in medicine and surgery for our patients.

For more on Dr. Lenart’s background, please read her bio below while we update our website:

Dr. Lenart grew up in Naples, FL, where she graduated from Gulf Coast High School. With a dedication to pursue veterinary medicine, she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from
Florida State University, before matriculating to St. George’s University School of Medicine for her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lenart’s special interests are Internal Medicine, Dermatology, and Intergrative Medicine, and she has developed a well-rounded approach to patient care. Her dedication to her clients is at the forefront of this approach, as she states, “I love educating owners and providing them with all of the knowledge and information possible to help them take care of their pets at home. I’ve always had a strong love of science and medicine, so I love nothing more than being able to share my education with others.”

many kind, intelligent, and wonderful people.”

Good day pet parents. I am sure some of you have seen or heard of the events reportedly linked to the use of “Seresto” flea/tick collars for dogs and cats. Our clinic has reached out to Elanco Animal Health who have at this time assured the products safety by stating that the product is tested at 3 to 5 times the active dose. According to Elanco with over 25 million products sold less than 1% reported adverse events with the most common being dermal or skin irritation at the site where the collar touches the skin. However, we understand your concerns and at this time we are advising if you feel unsure or unsafe using the collar for your pet, to remove the collar and switch to an alternative form of prevention. If you have any concerns or questions and would like to contact Elanco Animal Health you can visit their website http://www.petbasics.com/ or you can call their toll free number 1-800-255-6826.

FEBRUARY: NATIONAL PET DENTAL MONTH

Your pet’s dental health. How much do you think about it? As a pet owner, I almost never thought about it. As a veterinarian, I think about it daily in my patients. When I was a kid, I remember my mom telling me that she saw a cutting edge program that discussed dog dental cleanings. We both laughed at the idea. But after working as a veterinarian for several years, I told her that I was no longer laughing at that idea. She asked why, and I responded that a pet’s dental disease could definitely lead to disease elsewhere in their body such as kidney, liver or heart. More often than not, I can help a pet with dental disease, but much more difficult to help those with kidney or heart disease, especially if it is related to the dental disease.

So, as a pet owner, how do you know if your pet is having dental problems? For dogs and cats, the most common symptom is bad breath. Well, don’t most of them already have “bad breath”? Yes, that’s how common dental disease is in our pets. Typically, dogs and cats only show signs of oral pain when the pain is severe. Since they can’t talk, we need to be alert to other signs and symptoms.

Traditionally, veterinarians give a discount for dental services in the month of February. Here at Westbay Animal Hospital, we, the doctors, believe that pet dental health is important and host the “traditional February dental discount” all year. So this February, we at Westbay Animal Hospital have a pet dental awareness. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions about your pet’s dental health or have us check out your pet.

Ok facebook friends we need your help. Luci needs a home her owner passed away suddenly. Luci is a very sweet girl. Please see the below message from Luci's care taker: Photos will be posted below in comments

Luci is a 4 year old mixed breed shelter puppy. American Bulldog and boxer roughly 40 pounds full grown crate trained. She is a cuddler. She loves to take walks and she loves to grab the leash when she is about five houses away. She does have some skin issues where she gets a cytopoint shot every 6 weeks or so. Cost is about $86.00. She a special shampoo for the skin. She has a bath typically every week. She loves the towel being rubbed on her after a bath. She is very easy going. She will bark if there's somebody crossing a window or she hears or sees the squirrels outside. She's been never left unattended outside. She likes to sit out in the sun on the lanai by the pool but she does not like to go in the pool.
I am going to foster her until I find her a great home. I can be reached at 941-545-4430. I would love to find a home with someone who goes to Westbay since they know her history the best, but any loving home will be considered. Thanks Leah
