Ticks are in abundance, check your pet regularly. Lyme and other tick borne diseases can cause lethargy, joint and muscle aches.

A mild El Niño winter in Pennsylvania means ticks are out early and may already be attaching themselves to dogs — and you.

CAUTION***********
FYI: The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Please do not let your dogs and cats out alone. The coyote gets your dog to chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. Then the outcome is tragic as they can & will attack/kill your pets. Just be aware it can happen to your beloved pet. {Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.

As with any topical, always be cautious and aware that animals are attracted to scents. Don't let them lick and prevent a potential toxic situation.

If you use Voltaren pain cream, you should know that diclofenac, the medicine in Voltaren, is EXTREMELY toxic to dogs & cats. If they lick your skin or you pet them after using it they can get very sick. As with any human medications, please be careful around your pets.

Did you know? Luke warm water gets absorbed into the body faster. If you or your pooch are dehydrated or overheated, try that.

DID YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD NOT POUR COLD WATER ON AN OVERHEATED DOG OR PUT A WET TOWEL ON THEIR BACK ‼️
HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO…

Animal lovers, never make the mistake of throwing cold water on an overheated dog or putting a wet towel on his back. You will see the opposite effect.

Due to the cold, the veins contract and due to the high temperature (above 42 degrees), the proteins in the blood clot, which makes the blood thick and viscous.
Due to the combination of the two, the heart can no longer get the blood and the organs fail one by one due to lack of oxygen.

The result is a very slow but very painful death.
If you try to help an overheated dog in this way, he will still die.

First give lukewarm water to drink, then cool the soles of the feet and chest/lower abdomen with a damp towel.
Then put the dog in the shade on a damp towel!!

Sharing is highly desirable because again and again we see images of overheated dogs getting out of a car with water poured on their backs ❎

Spring is in the air and so are ACL tears, did you know there are more injuries during Springtime? Just like us, be sure to warm your dogs muscles before hard exercise..

Did you know that ACL tears are one of the most common injuries in dogs, particularly in active and athletic breeds? But did you also know that there are steps you can take to help prevent this injury from happening in the first place? Here are some tips for reducing your dog's risk of an ACL tear:

1. Keep your dog at a healthy weight - Extra weight puts more stress on your dog's joints, including the knees, which can increase the risk of injury. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can help reduce the risk of ACL tears, as well as other joint-related issues.

2. Provide regular exercise and conditioning - Regular exercise, including activities like walking, running, and swimming, can help build strength and endurance in your dog's muscles and joints, reducing the risk of injury. Just like humans, dogs need to warm up and cool down before and after exercise, so make sure to provide adequate stretching and rest periods.

3. Use proper technique when playing and exercising with your dog - Dogs love to play and exercise, but certain activities can put a lot of strain on their joints, particularly the knees. Avoid sudden stops, starts, and turns, as well as repetitive jumping or twisting motions, which can put excessive stress on the ACL.

4. Avoid high-impact activities like jumping from heights or playing on hard surfaces - High-impact activities like jumping from heights or playing on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt can increase the risk of ACL tears, as well as other joint injuries. Instead, stick to low-impact activities like walking, running, or swimming on soft surfaces like grass or sand.

5. Schedule regular check-ups with your veterinarian, who can assess your dog's overall health, identify any potential risk factors, and provide personalized recommendations for preventative care - Regular check-ups with a veterinarian are important for maintaining your dog's overall health, but they can also help identify any underlying conditions or risk factors that may increase the risk of ACL tears. Your veterinarian can also provide guidance on proper nutrition, exercise, and other preventative measures to keep your dog healthy and happy.

At Steel City K9, we specialize in helping dogs recover from injuries like ACL tears, but we also believe in the power of prevention. By taking these steps, you can help keep your dog healthy and active for years to come!
