What are some things you should and shouldn't do when meeting a new furry pal? Here are a few helpful tips.

Do:
🥳Use a Friendly Tone.
🥳Approach the Dog Calmly and Confidently.
🥳Ask the Owner for Permission BEFORE approaching and patting the dog.
Don't:
☹️Dont rush in for a Hug.
☹️Dont make direct eye contact
☹️Tower Over Them.

Those are just a few to name.

Always be cautious and mindful when meeting new dogs or interacting with dogs you don't know well. Not ALL dogs are aggressive and out to bite, but some dogs struggle with anxiety, have been trained to be protective, or are simply nervous around other dogs/humans. Just remember that all dogs are not the same! Using these few helpful tips could help keep you and the dog safe.

Did you know 95% of pet owners think of their dogs as a family member? BVC treats your pups like our family; that's why we recommend having your dog tested for cancer yearly. 6 million dogs in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year and 1 in 4 dogs in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Idexx recommends a cancer screening test for all dogs over the age of 7 as well as younger dogs ages 4+ with an increased risk of cancer in these breeds:
Labrador retriever
French bulldog
Golden retriever
German shepherd
Beagle
Rottweiler
Boxer
Pembroke Welsh corgi
Great Dane
Miniature schnauzer
Siberian husky
Bernese mountain dog
Mastiff
Irish wolfhound
Flat-coated retriever
Scottish wolfhound
Cancer screenings can save lives! Please, if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment to have your dog tested call the clinic at (802) 222-4903

Yes, it's true pets can experience anxiety in various situations like going to the vet, being alone, or during thunderstorms or fireworks. Did you know that Bradford Veterinary Clinic provides a comfortable and calming environment for your furry friends?

At BVC we have Adaptil and Thurderease calming defusers in all exam rooms, boarding rooms, and surgery recovery rooms. It's a great way to help soothe pets and make them feel relaxed.

The diffuser for dogs and cats mimics the calming pheromone which helps your pet feel calmer and more comfortable in stressful situations!
This helps reduce common stress-related behaviors like destructive chewing, trembling, panting, and barking

Additionally, we have both defusers, the Adaptil and the Thunderease for sale upfront in case you need them at home or while traveling. The clinic also offers travel sprays for both dogs and cats, as well as ThunderWonder shirts, calming chews, and calming collars for dogs. It's great to know that there are products available to help our pets feel calm and safe, no matter where they are.

Summer is coming and everyone is getting excited about planning their vacations. Have you been worrying about what to do with your pets while you’re away? We not only board dogs and cats, but did you know we also board chickens, reptiles, snakes, and birds, to name a few?!

We also have two luxury rooms for cats. Each room has a large bird-watching window, towers to climb, scratching posts left and right, and little tunnels for exploring!

Our boarding manager is Josh. Josh schedules all the boarding appointments and makes sure your pet is all settled in and happy while they hang out with us.

If your pets are at BVC boarding and need nail trims, baths, or vaccines, or you would like pupdates on your pets ( we email/text pictures of your pet so that you can keep up on how they are doing) we will happily schedule that into their stay with us.

Vaccines needed for boarding with BVC:

*Rabies
*Distemper
*Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)
*Bordatella

Feel free to call or email us! We would love to answer any questions you have and connect you with Josh to get your pet's luxury stay planned.

Have you ever contemplated the advantages of a professional groomer for your feline or canine companion?

There are numerous benefits to be gained from entrusting the care of your pet to a trained and experienced groomer. One of the key benefits is improved hygiene, which is crucial for maintaining your pet's health and well-being. Regular grooming can help prevent the development of hot spots and matting, both of which can cause discomfort and skin irritation. Moreover, professional groomers can provide specialized care tailored to cater to the unique needs of different types of coats, ensuring that your pet receives the attention and care they require.

If you're looking for a professional pet grooming service, we highly recommend coming to BVC. Our groomer can provide your pet with the care and attention they need to look and feel their best. To learn more about our services or to schedule an appointment, feel free to give us a call.

Additionally, if you're interested in having your pet groomed, it's important to check with BVC to determine what vaccines are needed prior to the appointment. Our team can provide you with all the information you need to ensure your pet stays healthy and happy.

We're looking for a full or part time veterinarian to join our team. My name in Doctor Susan Tullar, I love living in VT/NH. I get up in the morning and it is either 1) still, beautifully covered with snow and warm in my house, 2) warming up and smelling like spring and mud, 3) warm and vibrantly green, watching things grow and outpace my ability to keep them weeded, or 4) becoming more comfortable, smelling like fall, and putting all the preserves up before winter. I get ready for work, where I can't wait to be. I have a team of people that I enjoy working with, can't wait to tell them how my evening went last night, and look forward to listening to how theirs were. I get treated to little bits of new babies from staff on maternity leave when they come to visit. I get to fall in love with new puppies and kittens, bond with owners as their pets age, and assist them with their pet's passage at the end. As I move through the lives of these pets and pet parents, my staff comes with me. We rejoice in the young, respect the middle and mourn the end, all together. I come home to travel across New England to visit family on the weekends, walk the woods with my dog, do homework with my daughter, eat/drink locally made delicious meat/milk/veggies. I want to share this blessed road with another like-minded veterinarian. Please message us or call the clinic at 802-222-4903 if you're looking for a change of pace where the medicine is challenging, pro-actively preventative and a joy to practice while living a lifestyle where you can experience life too.

Do you know how many pets each year get lost?

Just in the U.S. alone, over 10 million dogs are lost from their owners. Every year BVC strongly recommends microchips, even for dogs that are always on a leash.

Here are 3 key reasons your pet should be microchipped:

*You're much more likely to be reunited with your lost pet
According to several studies, microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time, while dogs without microchips were dogs were reunited with their families just 21.9% of the time. Microchipped cats were returned to their owners 38.5% of the time, versus 1.8% for cats without microchips.

*Microchipping is the ideal identification method for pets
Microchips stay secure under your pet's skin and provide a permanent way to identify your cat or dog. Other forms of tracking such as collars and tags are good for keeping track of your pet but can easily be lost or fall off.
Both veterinary offices and animal shelters scan lost pets for microchips upon stray arrival. If someone takes your pet to one of these facilities, chances are good that you'll receive a call informing you that your pet has been found.

* Microchipping reduces the burden on animal shelters.
More than 6 million dogs and cats are surrendered to animal shelters every year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Shelters only have space for a limited number of animals. Providing food, water, shelter, and veterinary care for pets can be very costly. Microchipped pets can be quickly returned to their families, ensuring that the shelter has more room to care for animals needing new homes.

Call us to schedule an appointment to get your pet microchipped or call if you have any questions.

Wednesday wisdom inspired by Todd! Todd came in to visit us yesterday and our team was absolutely smitten with him 🦆 Today we thought we would share some fun (and wise) facts about ducks in general!

1) A female duck is called a Hen and a male duck is called a Drake.

2) To tell the difference between a male and a female, males have what is called a Drake Feather. A mature drake will often display one or more curled feathers right at the top of his tail. Drakes usually develop this feather when they get their adult plumage, around 8-12 weeks of age.

3) Did you know ducks and chickens should not be eating the same food? While your birds might enjoy sharing the same yard or barn space, you shouldn't feed them the same food, especially if you have ducklings. Both chickens and ducks have separate nutritional needs, and specific food blends are created to fulfill them.

Today is National Pet Day and BVC wanted to join the celebration by sharing a little story about our staff's beloved cat, Victor.

Victor has been a part of our clinic since 2018 and will be turning eight this October. Our team was smitten with him from the moment we met him. He is one of the sweetest felines you could ever encounter and he is also generously the BVC blood donor for other cats in need. He is ready for a cat in need of blood at a moment's notice.

He has claimed the clinic as his home and enthusiastically greets everyone who walks in. Victor loves to spend his time socializing with our devoted clients and keeping an eye on the team. Moreover, Victor is famous for his not-so-subtle requests for head and bottom pats.

Share your beloved pet pictures and stories in the comments below! We would love to read their story!

Go check out our new reel on instagram! Victor would like your full attention.
