Even though we are enjoying warmer weather now, temps can still drop below freezing at night and ice chucks form. Check your dog's paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked or bleeding paw pads. During a walk, a sudden lameness may be due to an injury or may be due to ice accumulation between his/her toes. You may be able to reduce the chance of ice ball accumulation by clipping the hair between your dog's toes. In my pet CPR and 1st aid class we cover environmental emergencies for cold weather as well as several other medical emergencies. We also discuss what to do if your pets’ heart and breathing stop. To quota a phrase from a movie series, “Winter is coming” If your pet is an avid outdoors sporting dog or an inside cuddle buddy, they have one thing in common. They need to go outside at some point. Even though your pet is protected for the most part from the elements their eyes, ears, mouth (mucus membranes) and feet are not as lucky. Please watch for frost bite during the upcoming extreme cold temps that we have here in Minnesota. Icey ground can also cut pads and damage claws. Thank you to Nose2Tail for allowing us to use your facility Sep 21 and 22. We recertified 6 people in Pet CPR and 1st Aid. This recert class is shorter but filled with just as much information sharing between people. I had a great time and learned some new items to add to future classes. Just wanted to make this post to increase awareness as I didn’t know about albuterol toxicity. If you have a Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) please use the same caution as with other medications. These, if punctured and the medication ingested can have adverse effects on pets. Please treat as a medical emergency if your pet is exposed to any MDI. Early interventions by a veterinarian may save your loved one's life. Albuterol toxicity isn’t the most common danger for puppies. With the increase of people being given albuterol inhalers to help with seasonal allergies or other respiratory problems, a rise in MDI related emergencies is noticed. Please make sure if there’s an inhaler in your house you keep an eye on it. Signs to watch for if you suspect that an MDI is punctured: Rapid heart rate, shaking. Weakness possible increased breathing rate nausea and vomiting. Watch for legs shaking even if the pet is laying still. This medication lowers the potassium levels and puts your pet at risk for cardiac arrest.
Albuterol may be prescribed for your pet. This may be in pill form or inhaled. Please follow the dosing instructions from your pets provider and they should be fine. As always, please consult your veterinarian for all pet health and medication questions.

We pause today, September 11, 2024 to remember the tragic events that unfolded 23 yrs ago. Please take a moment to reflect on that day and to “Never forget”! This was a very tragic day but also remember how we came together as a country! A nation united under one flag. Pride in our country was felt around the world. Heroic deeds both publicly known and unknown were accomplished. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who did not survive that day. Our deepest respect to law enforcement, fire fighters EMS and 1st responders who responded not knowing if they would make it out. 4 Paws Pet CPR /1st Aid want take a moment to thank each and everyone who serves in our armed forces, law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, and 1st responder groups. Thank You all! And above all Stay Safe!

Time to Renew Pet CPR and 1st aid for my first two classes. I have put together a short test and will be reaching out to the students from August 2022. Monday, May 27, Memorial Day, was paid for by our service members from day 1 of this great country’s inception until today. While you are enjoying this unofficial start of summer and long weekend, please take a moment and say a Thank you prayer to our service members who paid for our freedom with their lives. We honor and thank the veterans who lost their lives defending this country. We also want to thank the families who lost a veteran. Your sacrifice is not forgotten. 4 Paws CPR & 1st Aid would like to offer our sincere thank you to all veterans past present and future for your service or upcoming service. I cannot believe it has been 2 years since I have started these classes. I have had the privilege to meet new people, travel throughout the state. Our 1st classes are due to recertify soon. As we talked about in all classes these skills are not as sharp if not used, discussed, or practiced every once and a while. Here are some quick questions to keep your memory recall fresh and skills sharp.
What is a Safety 360?
How do I get past the Fight, Flight, or Freeze moment?
What is a good resting pulse for an adult dog or cat? (Find the pulse on your pet)
Compression to breath ratio?

Early Spring? Mother Nature is giving us a wide variety of weather. One thing is for sure, Ticks ARE out. It is time to start "Tick Checking" your pets after being outside. Also, with the warm weather puddles are starting to form. Thirsty pets like cold water. Remember, ground water may contain contaminants that could be harmful to pets. Radiator fluids, Oil and gasoline may have been inadvertently spilled. Keep your pets safe, fresh water should be available for them to have. Animal Poisson Control 1 888 426-4435. Thank you, Samoyed Club of Minneapolis, and St Paul for hosting a Pet CPR & 1st Aid Class. 12 more people were certified. This was another exciting class because of the engagement of the people attending. A lot of experiences and ideas were shared. Also, I met my first Samoyed. What a beautiful breed. I look forward to continued classes with this club.
