If you’ve been following me for a while, you might know that I was a K-9 handler in the Air Force. What most people don’t know is that I’d never owned a dog before that. Owning a business—let alone a dog training business—was never part of my plan.

After separating from the military, I was waiting to hear back on a job application and thought it’d be fun to train dogs on the side. I had no idea it would turn into anything bigger. Four years ago today, I asked my mom to share a post on Facebook to let people know I was available for dog training. Here’s the original post and the photo we shared:

“This is our son Ben and his dog Phoenix. Ben was a K-9 handler in the Air Force and he is going to be living here in King for a while. He’s looking to utilize his experience from the military and continue training dogs here locally. He’s worked with basic to advanced obedience. If anyone is interested you can feel free to message him. (Feel free to share.)”

I never imagined I’d be able to do this full time. To all my clients who have supported me over the years, thank you for allowing me to do what I love while supporting my family. I’m truly grateful!

Every dog is capable of change with the right guidance. Phoenix, my German Shepherd, used to be terrified of plastic bottles. I could surround him with empty water bottles, and he would freeze in fear for hours. (I didn’t actually surround my dog with bottles, I’m saying this to be funny) Through consistent training and a lot of work, he has gained tremendous confidence and now enjoys a much better life. It may feel challenging at times, but we can always improve our dogs’ lives with the right approach

Reality check: A reactive dog doesn’t equal a protective dog. Many people assume their big dog—whether a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, or Doberman—will instinctively defend them in a life-or-death situation. But here’s the truth: most reactive dogs are acting out of fear or insecurity, not bravery. In a real crisis, a reactive dog is far more likely to retreat if given the chance. And while a bite might happen, it’s usually not out of a protective instinct—it’s a response to fear or perceived danger. True protection requires confidence and control, not reactivity. It’s a misconception that size or breed alone determines a dog’s protective nature. Take the time to understand your dog’s behavior—it’s often more complex than it seems. #tampadogtrainer #tampa #tampadogtraining

I we see it all the time. Story after story. Dog after dog. Here’s another kid getting bit. Here’s another kid mauled to death. There’s another parent mauled to death. There’s countless stories. If you look up, dog attacks, fill in the blank. You’re going to see terrible things. Now I get it, not every dog is going to do this, but you don’t know that dog. Stop petting those dogs. Stop approaching those dogs. If you don’t know the dog, don’t approach it. Don’t pet it. Dog owners, for the most part, do not even know what their dog is capable of. And if you say, is he friendly? Of course they’re going to say he’s friendly. But he’s not. He’s probably not friendly at all. You have to be the advocate for your child. You have to teach your child when it’s okay to approach dogs and when it’s not. And for the vast majority of the time, it’s not okay.

Your puppy is unlikely to outgrow their current behaviors on their own. While it’s possible, most behaviors require active effort to address. If you’re not working on these issues, they won’t simply go away with time. You can’t ignore the problem and expect it to resolve itself in six months. Raising a puppy is about consistent training and guidance. Take the time to work on the challenges you’re facing now to set your dog up for success in the future.

Dog training isn’t about being rigid—it’s about preparing for real life. It can be as simple as teaching your dog to walk calmly on a leash or holding a down position while you run to the end of a pier and back. Will you need this exact skill? Maybe not, but it builds trust, focus, and obedience. The only limit in training is your desire to grow. If you put in the work, you’ll see massive results. Progress starts with effort—let’s make it happen!

Scatter feeding is an easy and effective way to engage your dog. Simply toss their food on the ground, and let them sniff and search for each piece. This keeps them mentally stimulated as they work for their meal and encourages slower eating. By consuming smaller amounts at a time, scatter feeding can also reduce the risk of bloat, making it a healthier option for your dog.

Dog training isn’t about teaching your dog to sit it’s about teaching them how to handle the real world. The more experiences we can show the the better they will do. I want all my clients to be able to do as much with their dog and it starts small.
