Northern breeds like Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are stunning, intelligent, and full of personality! We love them here at Jolly Dog Training and wanted to share some information about them:
•Endless Energy
These dogs were bred to RUN—whether pulling sleds or just for fun! They need daily vigorous exercise and mental enrichment to stay happy and out of trouble. A bored northern breed is a destructive one!
•Independent Thinkers
Unlike breeds who are naturally eager to recieve all of the human attention, northern breeds enjoy making their own decisions. This means training can sometimes seem difficult —they’re not stubborn, just have huge personalities and love to stay active! Patience, consistency, and motivation-based training are key.
•Solid Recall is a Must
Their prey drive and wanderlust make a reliable recall crucial. Start training early using long lines, high-value rewards, and practice in as many new environments as possible to build a strong recall.
•They Love To Talk!
Howling, wooing, talking back—northern breeds love to use their voice! If you prefer a quiet household, this might not be the breed for you.
•Grooming Galore
That gorgeous coat? It sheds constantly—and blows out completely a couple of times a year. Be ready for daily brushing, frequent baths, and extra cleaning!
