Congratulations to one of our assistants Madeleine on pulling blood for the first time, and kudos to technician Teagan for walking her through the steps.

Horses travel every day for a number of reasons—to be bought and sold, for competition, for breeding purposes, etc. Whether your horse travels by road or by air, horse owners need to be aware of the complications that may occur due to transportation, including traumatic injuries, diarrhea, muscular problems, respiratory problems, overheating, colic, and even laminitis (in the case of overweight horses).

Following are a few tips to help your equine friend maintain good health and welfare during transport. This list is by no means complete and we encourage you to read "Practical Guidelines to Assess Fitness for Transport of Equidae” to find additional advice. This document will also help you understand regulations and avoid penalties for being out of compliance: https://tinyurl.com/yck9cz86

• Inadequate management of feed and water intake during travel could cause colic, gastric ulceration and heat stress. Food and water should be provided prior to transport, during regular rest breaks and upon arrival at destination.
• Ensure your horse’s immunizations are up to date against respiratory pathogens to protect your animal from these diseases.
• The horse should be rested before the journey, given rest stops during travel and have time to recover on arrival at the destination.
• The vehicle should be well-ventilated to help prevent respiratory problems or overheating.
• Drive slowly and carefully (NO TEXTING, avoid driving when fatigued or eating while driving, etc.) to provide a comfortable journey for the animal and reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.

As always, your veterinarian remains your best resource. If you have questions, consult your horse doctor about preparing your equine friend for travel and keeping them safe!

Tater holds a lot of jobs/titles around here. Greeter, queen, princess, the boss lady, tater tot, potato, emotional support animal to name a few. She works a lot of overtime around here. We all love her dearly, she just requires love and attention, food, and a good nap location.

Today is veterinary appreciation day!

Our team has been working incredibly hard, and very long hours, the last few weeks especially. We have had numerous emergencies and surgeries on top of our regular day to day appointments. Our veterinarians and technicians have been killing it! We are incredibly proud to have such a strong and committed team of professionals available to care for our equine patients. Let’s show them, and any other veterinary professional that you might know some love and appreciation.

Today is Veterinary Appreciation Day! Join us in celebrating all the veterinary professionals that help our animals (especially our horses) live long, happy and healthy lives.

If you are looking for ways to say “thank you” to your veterinary team, there are plenty of options — like delivering fresh coffee and treats, leaving a paws-itive online review, or writing a thank you note. You could even Google a fun craft project to make a personalized gift! However, it’s very possible that the best way to thank your horse doctors and equine vet techs is to make their job easier. Some small things can make the biggest difference, like being understanding if the vet is running late; making sure your horse is caught and groomed before the arrival of the veterinarian; training your horse to be well-behaved during the visit; following the veterinarian’s advice and keeping an open line of communication so problems can be addressed quickly, etc.

No matter how you choose to say thank you today, there is no doubt you will brighten your vet team’s day!
