Let’s talk about the BIG, BAD ‘M’ word…. Maintenance. The elephant in the room. The taboo topic. One of the quickest ways to hear crickets in a conversation about a sale horse. Why is ‘maintenance’ a dealbreaker?

Horses are not perfect. Not a single one is perfect. Nor are any of us perfect. Maintenance is a necessity in all aspects of life. Think about it…

Vehicles. We don’t bat an eye at servicing our cars to ensure they stay ‘sound’ and running their best.

Homes. We don’t bulk at the annual maintenance on seasonal equipment, to ensure a warm house on cold days or a cool house on hot days.

Ourselves. Not feeling great - there’s plenty of short term and long term remedies (aka maintenance) to help keep us performing and functioning our best.

So why should our horses be any different? Why is the idea of ‘no maintenance’ better than ‘preventive maintenance’?

I appreciate any seller or horse owner who takes the initiative to ensure their horse is as comfortable as they can be - we ask them to perform a job that WE want them to do. They don’t need to do any job, but we ask them to be athletes, for our enjoyment.

The ‘M’ word should not be looked upon as a bad word, a dealbreaker or a red flag. Maintenance is a necessity to life. For everything - horse, human, vehicles, houses, equipment, you name it. If a seller discloses a horse needs maintenance, perhaps take a step back and appreciate the honesty in the information given and understand that the horse’s long term comfort level is being considered.

Maintenance isn’t a scary word, it’s an honest word.

Baby Belle had her first ride back after her holiday vacation. And was a perfect baby she was! First jump course… ever. First ride back after a few weeks. Windy and spitting rain. This mare truly has the best brain!
