🍀Tips for Leg Care for Your Horse🍀

Cold weather can be tough on a horse’s legs, especially their tendons and ligaments. Just like athletes, horses need protected legs to perform at their best and stay injury-free!

🔥 Why Warmth Matters:
Cold temperatures can tighten tendons, making them more prone to strain and injury. Proper leg care ensures flexibility, circulation, and overall soundness.

🛡️ Gear That Helps:
✔️ Polo Wraps & Training Boots – Protect against impact & provide support during exercise.
✔️ Standing Wraps – use no-bow or other brands to protect legs
✔️ Fleece or Neoprene-Lined Boots – Help retain warmth & keep joints supple.

💡 Pro Tip: Always warm up your horse gradually in colder months and check legs for any swelling or heat before and after rides! Putting your hands on them daily helps you identify changes or abnormalities.

💡 Real-Life Example:
Our trainer, Mathew Hutchins, recently caught a potential injury early on just by being attentive to his horses. One of them had a slight change in movement, nothing drastic, but he trusted his instincts. After checking the leg, he found mild swelling/bump that could have turned into a much bigger problem if left unnoticed. Thanks to early detection and proper care, the horse made an easy and quick recovery instead of facing months of rehab. We had help from Dr. Mende (Wolf Creek Equine) to diagnose the injury, shockwave the area, and put Whizard on a recover plan. This is why leg care, is so important! 👏🐎

What’s your go-to winter leg care routine? Drop your tips below! ⬇️

🍀 Laying Down a Young Horse: Building Trust Through Vulnerability ❤️

There’s something incredibly humbling about asking a horse to lay down beside you. It’s not about domination—it’s about trust. Horses are prey animals, and for them, lying down is one of the most vulnerable positions they can be in. When a young horse chooses to surrender to that moment with you, it’s a powerful step in your partnership.

At Lucky Z Ranch, we believe in training methods that honor the horse’s mind, not just its body. When we lay a young horse down, we’re not “breaking” them—we’re showing them that they’re safe with us, that we’ll protect them when they let go.

It’s in these quiet moments—sitting beside them, feeling their heartbeat slow as they breathe with us—that the real connection happens. A horse that trusts you when they’re at their most vulnerable is a horse that will look to you in times of uncertainty, both on the ground and under saddle.

Every great partnership is built on trust. Every soft ride starts with a willing heart. 💛🐴

Dun Crossing Borders- 2023 AQHA red roan gelding 15h+

Jameson is a strong pretty two year old, he's going to be a big stout horse.

Jameson's breeding on top goes back to "My Final Notice" a superior western pleasure and trail producer. His bottom side has some great reining and ranch producing lines such as; Dunit N Stars a great (reining, cowhorse/rope horse producer)

With his breeding there really are no limits. I think he would make a great ranch/versatilty, pleasure, or reining prospect.

He trailers, ties, crossties, hobbles, and is easy to handle get around and saddle. We've done all the groundwork, easy to bridle, ground drive, and has even been trained to lay down. We've been on Jameson a handful of times, trotted and loped around the arena BUT, he is being sold as a great two year old prospect not a broke experienced horse.

If you're looking for a big strong gelding to train your way come check out Jameson for yourself, you'll love him!

I just want to take a moment to express how thankful I am for our horse trainer, Mathew Hutchins. His dedication to my horses’ progress and his effort to improve my riding skills is something I’ll never take for granted.

Even something as simple as a trot around the ring has become an opportunity to refine my skills—steering more effectively, riding with better balance, and focusing on the technical details that make all the difference. It’s amazing how much of an impact his guidance has had!

To have someone who not only cares about the horses but also truly invests in helping me grow as a rider is such a blessing. Thank you, Mathew, for your patience, expertise, and for pushing us toward our goals every step of the way.

Here’s to celebrating progress, big and small! 🐴❤️
