One week from today is the 4th of July – are you and your pet prepared for fireworks? πŸŽ† Around 50% of all dogs and cats find loud noises like fireworks frightening, and will show their stress with behaviors such as hiding, pacing, howling, and trembling. More pets go missing on the 4th of July and New Year’s than any other times of the year! Make sure that your pets are securely contained and have a quiet space to retreat to – and if your pet requires anti-anxiety medications, please check and make sure that you have them NOW! It takes a few days to process a prescription refill, especially if your pet is overdue for an exam and needs to be seen by a doctor before medications can be dispensed. Save your pet (and yourself) the stress by making sure you’re ready to go in advance!

With a very heavy heart we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our hospital cat, Shelby, earlier this week🌈 ❀️ The past few months we began to see Shelby decline & we knew it was time. Many of you may of seen our post on her 18th birthday just this past summer & mentioning her start at Branford Vet as a kitten in rough shape. Dr. Reynolds (before she went to vet school) bottle fed her & helped nurse her back to health. Shelby would always introduce herself to new employees, & we would quickly let them know "careful she bites!" The truth is, Shelby was pretty much everyone's first friend when starting at Branford Vet. She was everyone's lunch buddy & taught you never to leave your food unattended! String cheese was one of her favorites! Shelby made you feel so special if she sat on your lap & starting making muffins (maybe a little on edge waiting for that love bite). She came running out of no where when a can of food was cracked & we would be lying if we said we didn't let her lick the spoon. Shelby was the first "caution" cat a lot of staff would get the honor of handling for practice & don't you dare ever touch her funny back toe! If a hospitalized pet didn't eat the food that we gave them, you could count on Shelby to finish it, even if that meant her sticking her paw through a cage door to dip her paw in the dish to get a taste! She loved basking in the sun & fighting with Poe, our other hospital cat, over the heating pads we use for surgery patients. She popped quite a few of those pads with her nails through the years! She'd come running on a mission if a feral cat got loose in treatment, as if she was going to protect her team. She helped distract scared or nervous dogs when they just needed something to focus on & she donated blood countless times for other cats in need. Shelby ordered us to turn on the faucet every morning, we never quite got around to teaching her how to turn it off. Thank you Shelby for everything you've done for Branford Vet through the years.

To our queen, our friend, our teammate ... we will all miss your quirks, your sass, & your free spirit 🩷 Love you Shelby Marie

Mae checking out after getting her monthly Librela injection for her osteoarthritis! Can we say happy girl?! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’œ Mom reports an improvement with her pain relief & mobility & Mae is able to cut back on the amount of pain relief medications she has always had to take! Librela is a once a month injection that works to interrupt the transmission of pain signals in dogs. Call our hospital to discuss with one of our team members or doctors to see if Librela is an option for your dog! PS! There is also a medication for our kitty friends who suffer from arthritis called Solensia!

Skylar, one of our veterinary technicians, with her dog, Buzz! πŸΆπŸ’š Buzz gets very scared & nervous for vet visits, especially the dreaded nail trims! Because of this, we utilize Fear Free techniques, using oral medications given at home & a little bit of a sedative, to make Buzz's experience way less scary! What he doesn't remember doesn't hurt him, plus having his favorite toy & soothing music doesn't make it so bad either!

This goofy guy worked his way into our hearts with his sass and charm. Iggy is believed to be about 3.5 years old and definitely still a kitten at heart. We believe he would be good with a dog and/or older kids. He’s confident, active, and smart. He has a lot of energy and a lot of heart and is just waiting for the perfect fit. 😻
