This beautiful juvenile red tailed hawk found himself in quite the predicament when he landed in hot tar . Luckily some nice residents noticed him and contacted us so we could contain him until we could bring him to our friends at A Place Called Hope ! Christine and her crew rehabbed this stunner and we were able to help release him about two weeks later 🦅♥️
We received notification on Tuesday evening of a fawn in distress in the area of Burban drive in Branford . Unfortunately it was dusk by the time we were contacted .
Wednesday morning an alert resident contacted us that he saw the baby but she had run back into the woods . After 20 minutes of searching , we found her .
How can you tell if a fawn is in distress
✅emaciated state
✅flies landing on them
✅ears could be curled back from dehydration
✅fawn running up to people crying
Her mother must’ve been killed because she was on her own for a few days . But luckily she was saved by the animal control team and is with a rehabilitator! This is a day in the life of an animal control officer !
🦌♥️🙌
On these beautiful days - the dogs are loving to play in the splash pad playground !
But Thor is becoming so sad and hopeless once he’s back in his kennel :(
We keep marketing and networking him and STILL not one application 😩
Thor is a 2 year old English setter mix . He’s a rough and tumble type of guy so he loves playing football , soccer , catching toys mid air , he loves hiking and getting pup cups and of course playing in the water 💦! Thor has met other dogs and seems good although he turns tail to run if they bark at him !
He’s probably too high of energy to be around cats .

Shelter life can be very stressful for animals . As many positive changes as we have made to the new building , we still can’t make it a forever home for the animals .
We really put a lot of thought into calming features and enrichment items . Some of those upgrades included silent open and closing kennels and cat condos , decompression rooms for animals struggling with transitioning to shelter life , televisions with birds , squirrels etc for long term cats , calming zen music throughout the building Amongst many other things we also had a splash pad built for shelter dogs
💦🐶♥️
But why does this upgrade really matter ? For the dogs who enjoy water play , this water park allows them to release a ton of energy .. it provides a different type of enrichment .. a new job . It also allows staff to bond with the animals more effectively since the dogs that naturally love water associate this fun time with the people out there with them . These types of upgrades provide us with more options to give the dogs opportunities to show us who they are and what they love . It releases pent up kennel stress and allows them to just be dogs .
In addition to all of those wonderful things - we have to say thank you …. TO ALL OF YOU ! All of you who donated in honor of Dr Osorio from Vet Associates of North Branford after his unfortunate passing made this dream for our dogs possible. You helped to change the lives of these homeless pets and have given them something to look forward to after they’ve lost their home .. family .. dog bed and. All that they’ve known . We know Dr. Osorio would be very pleased to know every day his name on this splash pad gives these animals joy and comfort.
This is Lola .. she is 8 months old , absolutely stunning , sweet , fun and up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application at www.branfordanimalshelter.org
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms of both two legged and four legged whether they have fur , fins or scales … we are moms to them all ! 💐💐
On this Sunday , we thought we’d start out with an adorable post !
Chip has had such an incredibly long healing journey and it wasn’t always easy . When you are starved for so long … even though all you want to do is eat , it can be dangerous and even deadly . So Chip would eat small amounts in the beginning in fifteen minute increments then 30 minutes then every few hours … as he healed so did his eating journey . And he was on a lot of medications that had to be split up in these meals . Chip was sad and confused going through all of it . So the staff started making it fun for Chip .. they would sing to him in between meals , dance with him and he LOVES CHASING SHADOWS AND LASER LIGHTS!!
So this weekend the staff created a disco party to celebrate with Chip on his healing and recovery and to provide enrichment to keep his spirits up while he awaits his forever home .
Chips the sweetest guy ever ! He is 5-7 years old and really just wants to know what it’s like to be loved ! If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application at www.Branfordanimalshelter.org
When we tell you that we really do have the best staff and volunteers , we aren’t kidding 🙌🙌❤️
The dedication and love these people show every day is admirable ! Thank you to Brittni and Cat for helping make Chips dream come true 🐶♥️
And last but definitely not least is Chip Easter Egg Hunting !
This guy has been through so much and is healing but it’s been a slow process . He obviously looks so much better now! He’s had quite a few setbacks and has been hospitalized a few times over this past month but we believe he is finally on the right track !
Chip will be looking for a forever home soon where he can decompress and just learn about love ❤️
If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application at www.Branfordanimalshelter.org
Charlie’s Easter Egg Hunting ….. it took him a minute to get it 🤣 but he’s just adorable 🐶🐰♥️
With lots of time , lots of patience and lots of love , we rehabilitate so many animals .
Cosmo was being given away on one of the sites for free … unneutered , unvaccinated and not tested . He appeared very social at first but after he got to the shelter he became extremely fearful and acted aggressive.
Each animal is an individual and comes with their own traumas from being abandoned, not having consistency in their life and of course being surrounded by strangers at the animal shelter .
And every day we take the responsibility of caring for these animals very seriously. We work tirelessly to rehab them from all the wrongs they’ve experienced.
Cosmo found himself a forever home this past weekend 🐈❤️🏡
Congratulations Cosmo 🎉🌟!!
PLEASE SHARE ! This little guy is Ralph and he is STILL LOOKING GOR HIS FOREVER HOME 😩!
Ralph has been with us since May of 2023 .. he was abandoned on the trolley trail in Branford in a dog crate but off the beaten path . He has been in a board and train for a few months to work on being reactive , needing a job , understanding the world around him and gaining coping skills for all of his anxiety and pent up energy .
Ralph is a 1.5 year old Rat Terrier . He needs to be an only pet and no children … we know it’s a big ask but he’s really a good dog that needs someone to focus on him . You can also continue training with him at the board and train to learn skills with Ralph .
Applications can be found at www.Branfordanimalshelter.org
🌟🌟PUPDATE FOR THE LITTLE PUPPY FROM CHRISTMAS TIME🌟🌟
This little puppy was brought into Pieper Emergency after somebody was breeding their dog and this pup had birth defects. The baby needed immediate emergency care so we took the baby on and lucky for us a wonderful vet tech stepped up to offer to foster him. After falling completely head over heels in love with this baby, the foster has now decided to adopt him.
He is now named Cas ! He was born with a cleft palate and has some other medical issues. But as you can see from him riding on the roomba, he is an absolute ham!!
If you are interested in following his story go to his page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557523139673&mibextid=JRoKGi
He has a long road ahead of him but he is in the best hands possible! 🐶♥️🙌⭐️
‼️‼️PLEASE SHARE !! Parker needs a FOREVER HOME ‼️‼️
Here’s Parker ! For those who don’t know Parker was abandoned almost 7 months ago due to having a skin condition and the owner was moving ( we later found out from someone who knows the owner but refused to give us any further information)
Parker came to us happy , sweet and full of joy but after many months she started to fail at the shelter . Then a wonderful foster home stepped up ! But this foster family is going on vacation in May so Parker really needs a forever HOME !
Here is a video of Parker at her foster home . She is lovely with the neighbors dogs as you can see . Parker does not want to live with cats but did like children she met at the shelter .
Parker is 3-4 years old boxer mix , spayed , vaccinated and microchipped. She is house trained and is about 50 pounds .
If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application at www.Branfordanimalshelter.org
We’d like to formally introduce everyone to Beauty and Henry ! 🕊🕊
Beauty was likely a wedding dove - released at an event - where she never found her way back . Beauty found herself living on a residents property and they weren’t sure if she was hurt so we went and retrieved her and settled her into our barn so we could evaluate her . Beauty had no wounds or injuries … she is just a domesticated bird who found herself without a family until she landed with us . Our Buildings Guys built her a nesting box in the barn and beauty became very comfortable and was right at home .
Fast forward six months later and Farm River Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation took on a hurt pigeon who needed some rehabilitation. However when they went to release him , he wasn’t interested in leaving . So he too joined the Zen Barn at the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter.
It wasn’t exactly love at first sight but after a week or so they began sharing nesting boxes ( even though our buildings guy built Henry his own box) and they started taking daily flies in the sky together . Henry now follows Beauty everywhere . 🕊♥️🕊♥️
At the end of the day , they are closed into their Zen Barn love nest for the evening and wait until the sun rises and the staff are there to open them for their morning fly about and breakfast .
We will post regular updates of their love story and journey together 🌟🕊🏡
One of the hardest and most rewarding things we experience, is when an animal that is at the shelter ( and you know they were mistreated before they got to you ) , finally feels safe and accepted .
It takes so much time , patience , understanding and love but once they trust you and they snuggle their little body into you … it’s like magic .
Many times this is the most love they’ve ever felt .
And people will ask … well how do you know they were mistreated ?
There’s many signs …. But in this case this little guy was abandoned.
He was very fearful in many circumstances.
But over time , he just is so trusting in the process and knows he is safe .
One of the things that truly makes this shelter so unique is giving every animal the time , energy , rehabilitation , love and understanding they need to grow and shine . And Sylvestre Stallone is a prime example of it 🐶♥️
Look at how AMAZING Ralph is doing ! Ralph is a 1 year old pure bred rat terrier . He is vaccinated, microchipped, altered and heartworm negative.
Ralph is a rat terrier that was abandoned in a crate in the woods at the Trolley Trail in Branford. Ralph has been with us for 280 days .
Ralph needs a specific home . He needs to be an only pet and he needs to live without children . Ralph is a working dog and he needs a job. Continuing training like this would really work well for Ralph’s brain !
We have posted Ralph before and we always get applications listing small children or other animals so we want to be specific
‼️Ralph CANNOT LIVE WITH CHILDREN
‼️Ralph CANNOT LIVE WITH OTHER ANIMALS
Ralphs best home would be one where they have had rat terriers before . Ralphs new owners will be trained on handling skills by the current trainers who are training him so you must be willingly drive to Stamford for training .
We understand it’s a big ask but we have so many amazing followers and adopters … we just know his perfect home is out there 🐶♥️🏡
If you are interested in adopting please please fill out an application at www.Branfordanimalshelter.org
